I am Miss Millets 2004
Advantages: Good quality goods and reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Still has stigma of being frumpy
...Well,I may not be the latest Pop Idol but my dog-walking pals have voted me MISS.MILLETS! I have won this title since Santa Claus "waterproofed" me ready for the New Year ahead.
When I was younger, the idea of entering Millets was unthinkable. At the grand old age of 36,this weary walker of a lively young labrador decided to quit the 3-wet-coats-a day syndrome and I visited my local Eastbourne store in search of a waterproof jacket.
It didn't seem so scarey on Christmas Eve as my boyfriend was paying! He seemed attentive and caring about my winter well-being so I felt optimistic (only to discover later that he was relieved at knowing what to get me for christmas as he always leaves it to the last minute).Of course,he is not as daft as he looks, as he now sends me out in the rain as I have all the kit!
Right,I must get on with it...

I'm off to Millets and might be some time
Advantages: good products, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: people perceive it as cheap and tacky
...Millets has always been a favourite shop for me because I like to look at cagoules..and no, I'm not bonkers. You see, Millets stocks Peter Storm cagoules and fleeces-my favourites, and you can't get them just anywhere. So when my current outer garments are getting a bit frayed, I go to Millets in Halifax and have a good browse.
Not that I always BUY from Millets- the price does have to be right and sometimes they don't have an offer on what I want and somewhere else has something similar for the lower price- and off I go. My loyalty only extends so far..just as far as my purse does, actually.
These stores are situated all over the country and you'd be unlucky not to have one at least fairly close to where you live. I go to the Halifax branch because it's the closest one to me.
It's not huge but I don't need huge if they stock...

Not Your Common or Garden Flour
Advantages: Makes smooth white sauces
Disadvantages: None at all!
...I never intended getting excited about something as mundane as a bag of flour but everytime I use this product I absolutely rave about it. I?m always telling my friends how good it - so it really is high time I wrote a review on it.
I like to make my own cheese sauce - I find the packet mixes too salty and synthetic tasting - the only problem is that if I use ordinary plain flour or cornflour the whole process can be really hit and miss. Sometimes the sauce is lumpy other times it?s either too thick or too thin. I tend to get in a bit of a mess trying to mix the flour with the butter and it all ends up as a nasty yellow lump at the bottom of the pan.
About two years ago, after serving my son a truly revolting cauliflower cheese dripping in sauce that had curdled and separated he told me about Carrs Sauce Flour. I was totally...

Are These Flour Men Just Weeds?
Advantages: Good book, easy to read, multi-layered, fun to read.
Disadvantages: Suggested more than it delivered, few female characters.
...As it is currently the school holidays, we have been spending a few hours at the local library. One of the books my ten-year-old daughter chose to borrow was Flour Babies by Anne Fine. I recalled hearing some good things about this, so asked her if I could read it after she had finished it.
The cover is really cute too – a brown sack of flour with a pink dress and long lashed eyes. There is also an embossed gold medal on the front, proclaiming the novel as being the winner of both the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Award.
The story follows the exploits of the notorious class 4C and their long-suffering teacher, Mr. Cartright. Class 4C contains all the rejects – the naughty boys, the thick ones, the lads that no one really wants to teach. So when the teacher has to get them involved in the annual school science fair...

'MEXICAN WAVE' FOR DISCOVERY SOFT FLOUR TORTILLA TIME!
Advantages: MANY AND VARIED, A VERSATILE ADDITION TO THE KITCHEN CUPBOARD...
Disadvantages: NONE - THEY ARE LOVELY AND SOFT, YUMMY AND SCRUMMY....!
...Tortillas are a relatively new addition to my household foodstuffs, and I have to be honest I have been amazed by their versatility and deliciousness, folks!
In fact I would be hard-pressed to find any fault with them at all... :o)
These soft round and flat rather slender wheat flour discs (approximately the size of a reasonably-sized dinner plate), are a wonderful carbohydrate tummy filler-upper, and a very healthy alternative to our common-a-garden white bread. My initial encounter with these tasty babies came after a Weight Watchers weekly meeting where my friendly leader, Fiona, recommended them as a low fat change to our usual sliced lunchtime sandwich.
Now I can be as wary as the next about trying something new, foreign and seemingly exotic in origin - but after standing there in good old Morrisons and eying up these...

Soft Flour Tortillas - A very versatile wrap
Advantages: You can use them for anything
Disadvantages: They're too addictive
...If you are looking for a bit of variety in a meal, or an alternative for bread, then I would really recommend Discovery Soft Flour Tortillas. I have always got a couple of packs in the cupboard and I think they are the most useful thing to have around.
I?ll summarise some of the facts, and then give you some ideas as to how I use them:
Type of Tortilla - These tortillas come in packs of 8 ? in either Original or Garlic & Coriander flavour. They are not at all dry and both have a really good flavour.
Where you can find them - You can find them in most supermarkets near to the packets of rice. I bought mine in Tesco, but I?ve seen them in Asda, Sainsbury and Somerfield before.
Price ? they cost £1.28 usually, but you can often find them as part of an offer. A couple of weeks ago they were reduced in Tesco to £1...

Carrs Sauce Flour
Advantages: Quick, easy and cheap.
Disadvantages: None.
...I am a qualified chef and a bit of a stickler for cooking the 'proper' way, but I am always looking for easier quicker ways of doing things. I love cheese sauce but I have never found a good convenience cheese sauce mix, they are always too salty and horrible.
I have been using Carrs sauce flour for years now, it is good, reliable, and easy to use. The instructions on the packet will tell you to use 1oz of sauce flour for 1 pint of milk. I find that you can make a good sauce with 1oz to 1pint. You simply make a paste with the flour and a little of the milk and blend in the rest slowly. Bring it to the boil on the hob and simmer for only 3 minutes, then voila - you have a good smooth white sauce - easy peasy! Now you can do what you want with it.
Want a white bechamel for your lasagne? - use carrs sauce flour.

Ramble away
Advantages: quite a good range
Disadvantages: can be a bit pricey
...If you are the sort of person who likes to spend their summer outdoors, maybe the odd picnic, some rambling, camping and the like, this is a shop well worth a visit. It's a good, middle of the range store catering to walkers and modest outdoors types - if you want to do more extreme stuff, they probably won't have the kit for you, but for us less ambitious souls, it works very nicely thank you.
Clothes: MIllets do a lot of clothing. I really wouldn't bother buying t-shirts, shorts, jumpers or the like from them however as they are a tad more expensive than other shops, and there's no real difference. Where Millets come into there own is with the waterproofs, coats, trousers, walking boots and the like - these are generally less common in the high street and essential if you mean to venture outdoors in this country. Expect to pay...

A very mixed kettle
Advantages: Budget kit always in stock
Disadvantages: No high end gear - special orders cost £5 postage....
...Millets....Good old millets, a familiar high street camping chain was taken over by blacks which became the OutdoorGroup Recently.
Their range of stock is based mainly on their own inhouse brands such as eurohike, Peter Storm and ALS.
Now you may have seen these before..... in a Blacks store as both are part of the same group. Peter Storm clothing is generally of reasonable quality, provided your doing nothing more than path walking it will serve you well. Go up and do some serious hillwalking and you can forget it - it is not designed for it. Jackets lack wired hoods, a crucial feature. Peter storm footwear is also something of a mixed blessing, they've managed to produce a range that goes from reasonable to abissmal as in general the footware is very high volume, heavy and lacks cushioning.
For loads above 8-10Kgs eurohike...
