...Well,I may not be the latest Pop Idol but my dog-walking pals have voted me MISS.MILLETS! I have won this title since Santa Claus "waterproofed" me ready for the New Year ahead. When I was younger,the idea of entering Millets was unthinkable. At the grand old age of 36,this weary walker of a lively young labrador decided to quit the 3-wet-coats-a day syndrome and I visited my local Eastbourne store in search of a waterproof jacket. It didn't seem so scarey on Christmas Eve as my boyfriend was paying! He seemed attentive and caring about my winter well-being so I felt optimistic (only to discover later that he was relieved at knowing what to get me for christmas as he always leaves it to the last minute).Of course,he is not as daft as he looks, as he now sends me out in the rain as I have all the kit! Right,I must get on with it...

I'm off to Millets and might be some time

Advantages: good products, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: people perceive it as cheap and tacky

...Millets has always been a favourite shop for me because I like to look at cagoules..and no, I'm not bonkers. You see, Millets stocks Peter Storm cagoules and fleeces-my favourites, and you can't get them just anywhere. So when my current outer garments are getting a bit frayed, I go to Millets in Halifax and have a good browse. Not that I always BUY from Millets- the price does have to be right and sometimes they don't have an offer on what I want and somewhere else has something similar for the lower price- and off I go. My loyalty only extends so far..just as far as my purse does, actually. These stores are situated all over the country and you'd be unlucky not to have one at least fairly close to where you live. I go to the Halifax branch because it's the closest one to me. It's not huge but I don't need huge if they stock...

Ramble away

Advantages: quite a good range
Disadvantages: can be a bit pricey

...If you are the sort of person who likes to spend their summer outdoors, maybe the odd picnic, some rambling, camping and the like, this is a shop well worth a visit. It's a good, middle of the range store catering to walkers and modest outdoors types - if you want to do more extreme stuff, they probably won't have the kit for you, but for us less ambitious souls, it works very nicely thank you. Clothes: MIllets do a lot of clothing. I really wouldn't bother buying t-shirts, shorts, jumpers or the like from them however as they are a tad more expensive than other shops, and there's no real difference. Where Millets come into there own is with the waterproofs, coats, trousers, walking boots and the like - these are generally less common in the high street and essential if you mean to venture outdoors in this country. Expect to pay...

A very mixed kettle

...Millets....Good old millets, a familiar high street camping chain was taken over by blacks which became the OutdoorGroup Recently. Their range of stock is based mainly on their own inhouse brands such as eurohike, Peter Storm and ALS. Now you may have seen these before..... in a Blacks store as both are part of the same group. Peter Storm clothing is generally of reasonable quality, provided your doing nothing more than path walking it will serve you well. Go up and do some serious hillwalking and you can forget it - it is not designed for it. Jackets lack wired hoods, a crucial feature. Peter storm footwear is also something of a mixed blessing, they've managed to produce a range that goes from reasonable to abissmal as in general the footware is very high volume, heavy and lacks cushioning. It's Pasta Mate But Not As You Know It

Advantages: Gluten free. Low fat. Healthy. Tastes like pasta.
Disadvantages: Pricey. Needs to be cooked as per guidlines.

...The Sexual Life of Catherine M - Catherine Millet Muffin has always banged on about Anais Nin to me, and someone else had once mentioned that 'The Sexual Life of Catherine M' was also shocking and explicit if not more so than that of Anais. So when I saw it in Fopp's £3 book section I thought 'oh stuff it? shock me.' 'The Sexual Life of Catherine M' is Catherine Millet's (now a famous publisher and art critic) autobiography of not her life, but the sex life she has had. She had no qualms in anything sexual with men, women, groups and there is even some bestial fantasy's. Mainly like I have said it is autobiographical but some of it is set in dream and fantasy sequences. There's not really a lot of plot to this book, its like a soft porn (ok maybe verging on hardcore) movie written into a book, like they do with some blockbusters...

...Millet is very honest. She has no qualms in being entirely open (in so many senses...) We watch her engage in group sex and some mild fetish acts. She has no inhibitions, in the flesh, or in her choice of nouns. But to be honest I'm not sure I believed her laid back attitude. Her lifestyle as a 'swinger' seems not to have been chosen, and on that count I do not see how we can applaud her. Catherine M has made a point of having sex indiscriminatly with all who are willing, aided by her 'friend' Eric who struck me as a rather sinister pimp. How many of us found ourselves participating in group sex a few weeks after losing our viginity?! I can't help but feel that she fell into something when she was young and vulnerable. This is compounded by being told that she rarely enjoyed the acts. Her outlook is blase from start to finish. She recalls...

...and the stories were definitely risqué but they were extremely well written, humorous and graphic and definitely left me a little sweaty and ready for fun. I wish I could say the same for Catherine M. Catherine Millet is an expert on modern art and is the editor of of the Art Press magazine. Well now you know what she is by day.
