Digital vs SLR. Horses for courses
Advantages: SLR Control creativity expandable
Disadvantages: SLR Immediacy cost size
...I'm surprised there are so few opinions on this subject - everybody seems to be talking about the great debate digital vs SLR. So here are my few thoughts. This isn't comprehensive - never could be, but I hope it helps.
Let me structure my opinion by users - find the type you are closest to and see if you agree or disagree.
CASUAL PHOTOGRAPHER - HOLIDAY SNAPPER
You probably want to use your camera for pictures of the kids, holidays, birthdays, weddings, friends and families - and don't need extra lenses, filters or flashes to carry around. Here you probably don't want to learn about photographic technique, wouldn't ever own or use a darkroom (wet or digital). You are looking for convenience in size, weight and cost.
Most likely to use a 35mm compact camera, maybe with a zoom, cost anywhere between £25 and £150...

Getting Your Kid Into Digital Cameras
Advantages: Features Like Any Regular Digital Camera
Disadvantages: 16 MB Internal Memory and No Zoom Capabilities
...No digital camera review on CIAO would be complete without a few entries about cameras designed for kids. After all, kids are almost universally enthusiastic about taking pictures. And parents with a love of photography often pass down their passion to their children. But digital cameras are not always kid-friendly, due to fragile construction, price, or complicated menus and buttons. The newest trend in children's electronics is a group of digital cameras made especially for small children. These cameras are easy to hold, come in bright colors that kids love, and have many of the same features as grown-up digital cameras. Kids love them.
The VTech KidiZoom Digital Camera is one of the top digital cameras for kids. This camera was made with fun in mind. Kids like the KidiZoom's large LCD screen and the onboard photo editing options...

Go for an SLR
Advantages: SLR's are cheaper! Development is cool!
Disadvantages: Digital is convenient! Plus colour is easier!
...If your considering buying a camera, and you have a similar mindset to me, you could never go digital. To put things in perspective, I have just finished a photography GCSE course and got a B. I have just started A-level, and have aspirations to go to university and do a BA in photography. I really don't care much about cameras, but I can recognise the fact that a camera does help a photographer improve.
The debate shouldn't be Digital vs. SLR - it should be 35mm vs. Medium Format! Limiting yourself to an SLR is pretty constricting when you consider the options.
Digital is out of the question for anyone who wants to do anything creative with their photography - you lose access to the darkroom (unless you print transparencies on your printer), which is the best way to have fun with photography. Photoshop is a good way of getting...

Digital Dream
Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op
...An excellent little digital camera just bursting with great features. That's my opinion on my Dimage V. Now before you get all excited and want to rush out and buy one I must warn you that this is an old model. I've had it for about 3 years. However, if you were to see one of these being sold second-hand, I'd tell you to buy it quickly.
~~~~ Technical Specs ~~~~
Resolution - 640 x 480 with 24 bit colour (16 million Colours)
Features ~ 1-2x optical zoom, Macro setting, rotating lens, removable lens
Memory ~ 5V SmartMedia (2mb card supplied)
Minolta F300 - Digital Camera & Video
Advantages: Easy to use,Fantastic Photographs,Video Capabilty
Disadvantages: None
...of a new member of the family,this was an important Factor.This was simple to Operate,turning the Main switch to the correct marker,and clicking start.There is a limit to the amount of Video you can take,according to the Hard Drive Card Size.My Middle Range Card enabled me to take 40 Minutes of Audio Video,but i was shooting 20/30 seconds pieces of film,downloading onto the laptop and then deleting from the Camera,opening up the space again.
The Other Main use of my Camera is to take Excellent Quality Digital JPG Photography for my Ebay Site.There are 6 settings in the 'focus' range,enabling Photography of Landscapes down to the minutest detail on a stamp.This range is perfect for me,and after a little use,i found myself setting the focus,by a couple of clicks.The Camera though,is so advanced,that from a Facial Shot upto Landscape Shot...
SLR rules
Advantages: cheaper than digital
Disadvantages: You need to actually think about the shots you take
...For the serious photographer there are two options when buying a camera. Either a state of the art digital machine, or the slightly outdated but considerably cheaper (cameras which use a system of mirrors to let the user see directly through the lens). If money weren?t an object, many people would choose a digital camera, however many of us don?t want to go out and blow a large amount of money on a digital camera. There may be a feeling when buying a digital camera that you are ?settling for less.? This is by no means the case, and I aim to show you a few techniques that will enable you to take superb pictures with an SLR camera.
Personally, I use a Practika SLR from the mid eighties. In fact, I am only slightly older than the camera. Using this camera I have taken (if I do say so myself) excellent shots in Glasgow, mainly thanks to...
Canon IXUS 95 IS: The best amateur digital camera on the market
Advantages: Very high quality pictures for both print and web work.
Disadvantages: The bundled software that comes with it has a very Fisherprice feel about it.
...After reading many reviews on Amazon and amateur camera sites about the different types of hobbyist level digital cameras, I decided to buy one of these.
The camera itself has a metal casing and so has a sleek feel and look to it. It's very light weight and compact making it very easy to carry around in a handbag or while, (and most importantly) taking pictures! I found that it took only 5 - 10 minutes to get the camera working from out of the box. It was so simple, I didn't take that much notice of the manual.
When starting up the camera, it isn't slow like they digital cameras of yesteryear. Its ability to capture anything in an instant is one of it's many advantages. The photos it and you produce are very high quality, as I found out the other day when I had some printed off at home.
The only downside is the bundled software...
Advanced and good value for money digital camera
Advantages: Good camera
Disadvantages: Price
...I bought this camera from marks and spencers for £279.99.
This camera is great due to all the features that it has. It has a great 12x optical zoom, which even at 9x or 10x zoom, the pictures look quite clear and well taken photos. It has a good image stabilisation feature which allows you to take photos even if the object of person is moving very fast.
Its battery life is quite good compared to most ordinary cameras which allows you to take 250 photos on average. It is a 10.1 megapixel camera which has a very high number of pixels for each picture, and I can say this is definitely so when I upload my pictures onto my laptop as the pictures are VERY clear and they still look good when zoomed in by half the size of the picture....
Sony Alpha A200 (Digital SLR)
Advantages: Price, brand, quality
Disadvantages: Manual modes
...I purchased this camera last year and have since used it more a variety of general and professional photos.
As a basic digital SLR it does a very good job and is perfect for general and amateur photography with a variety of easy to use features and image stabilisation technology. When set to "Auto" mode, the camera will do pretty much everything for you and will work out exposure and focus with very good precision. A fast image processor also helps for taking quick snaps! There are a number of useful modes for adapting the camera quickly and easily to different kinds of photos and lighting conditions and the lens supplied will give you a good range of shots.
I have also tried taking some more professional photos with this camera as well, using the manual features and different lenses. One very handy point to mention is that this...
SLR user switching to mid range Digital camera.
Advantages: Excellent Zoom and picture quaility, Very Fast startup and powerful onboard Flash
Disadvantages: Slightly Cheap Feel, Quite low pixel count
...As a long term optical SLR camera operator who wanted a good specification Digital camera I spent a long time evaluating the marketplace.
Important criteria were a high value optical Zoom and a range of modes from fully Automatic to fully Manual.
The Z1 offers a 10x optical Zoom, with the ability to enhance this further with a 4x digital Zoom. The optical zoom works very well, however the digital zoom effectively works by zooming in on the pixels in the memory, thus at maximum the image can be quite grainy.
As with any long lens camera ?zooming? the lens will increase the f/stop resulting in longer exposure times, coupled with the zoom magnification, camera movement should be addressed by a tripod or a very steady hand.
The shooting modes of the camera range from fully Automatic, (you do have to manually open the Flash cover if...
