...Mint has a genus of around twenty five species, but in fact there are hundreds of different varieties. Most of us think as mint of a herb that we only use in cooking when in fact it can be quite an attractive plant in it`s own right. Mint in general likes a cool shady spot in the garden and it will flourish given the right conditions. Many of us have at some point made the mistake of planting a sprig and ending up with a patch that has grown out of control. I have often grown my mint in a terracotta pot, this keeps the plant at bay and if the pot is well situated it can be an ideal way of attaining a decent crop. If it looks as though a frost may be in the offing then move the pot closer to the wall or the fence to protect the plant. ...It goes without saying that I struggle to write reviews that don't include some medicinal information. From mint imperials to peppermint tea, mint is a highly versatile medicinal herb. It has a unique, refreshing taste and is one of my favourite flavours. Historically Speaking The medicinal uses for mint can be traced back to medieval Europe. The earliest written description of the plant was way back in 1669. However its Latin name Mentha palustris, Peper-Mint was noted down in 1704 and its healing properties described in 1705 by the pharmaceutical author Dale. We Are Family Now plant biology was never my strong point but even I know that Ciao has made a small error. In the herb categories, mint and spearmint are listed separately. In fact, Spearmint, just like Peppermint and Pennyroyal belong to the same species family...

...The other day , I was at my local newsagents looking at the magazine rack when I fancied something to chew on?yet I wasn't that hungry. I glanced at the 'bags-of-sweets-section' and my eyes were snatched by a red and white sign which sat brightly by the Fox Mints. "Buy One Get One Free" it clearly read. The offer could not have come at a better time. I happily grabbed two bags from the shelf and took them to the counter along with my magazine. I have always loved Fox's Glacier Mints , however they were not something I bought on a regular basis. Yes..I loved them?but it wasn't something I considered I couldn't live without and therefore they became somewhat of an occasional treat. Advantages: easy to grow and impossible to kill
Disadvantages: grows like a weed and may take over your garden if let out.

...Mint is one of those herbs that grows very well in this country, perhaps a little too well in some cases. It does not seem to be that fussy about soil quality, it can cope in dry sumers and as far as I can tell, it is unkillable. (Getting rid of it is like trying to kill a hydra - cut down one plant and another two spring up somewhere else.) Mint can be bought easily from plant shops, herb farms and the like. If you keep it in a small pot in your kitchen, it may well get pot bound and wither - mints like to have big root systems. If you plant mint outside, you will have problems. Mint spreads by putting out roots and then shooting up plants. If it does this in a border, you will never be able to control it without damaging your other plants.
