We decided to spend a long weekend in Minorca?s Capital, Mahon and found this hotel through Octopus Travel; we paid £454.00 for 4 night?s bed and breakfast for three adults in a triple room over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Location: 8½/10 The Hotel is situated in a nice quiet residential area about ten minutes walk from the centre of Mahon and only 5kms from the airport. It is set on a cliff above the port which can be reached down a long and steep road at the back of the hotel or by a large set of steps from the centre of the city. Appearance: 8½/10 Quite modern and well kept, with a large terrace area at the side. Parking: 0/10 None! Be warned if you hire a car as you will have to park some way from the hotel and the local police just love to ticket hire cars! Lobby: 8/10 Reception...

A Class Act On The Costa Brava

Perched on a hillside high above the historic fishing port of Palamos, El Mirador (which translates as 'the Lookout' in Spanish) commands spectacular, panoramic vistas along the coastline and across the fringes of the beautiful Costa Brava. We had driven southwards from Girona, towards Palamos, then Calonge. At this point, the crumpled, supplied directions from the owner were tugged out, and we had pressed on. A Palatial Hotel fit for a Queen

A quick double-take confirmed that indeed it was. Although it dates from the 17th century, the building was totally restored and the hotel opened only in 1999, giving the best of both modern and new. The hotel has 68 rooms and sleeps 150. On entering the hotel, you're immediately struck by the elegance of the main reception area. Everywhere is shining marble, intricately carved oak panelling, antique furniture and deep sofas. There are two internal courtyards leading off from the reception area and these have partial glass walls which means the desk, lounges and foyer are bathed in soft sunlight. El Mirador If you have the opportunity, do take a taxi out of the city to the viewing tower at Sachaca in time for sunset. From here there are unrivalled views of nearby El Misti, a snow-capped volcano that is over 5800m high. At dusk, the mountain was coloured a bright red colour, which makes for spectacular photographs. The viewing tower (el Mirador in Spanish) is a five storied high white tower located in a small village in the middle of vast flat fields, making for a stunning panorama. Shhh...it's a secret!

Disadvantages: not suitable for disabled/push chairs/ people with bad backs!

This converts to about £5.50 which is a rather good price for an attraction like this. *~*~*GETTING THERE*~*~* The Green Caves are situated north of the Island. It is positioned nicely on the north-eastern coast not far from the town of Arrieta. You can go to the caves as part of an excursion. The excursion up this way usually includes several other attractions such as the Jardin de Cactus (Cactus garden), Famara, Mirador Del Rio (the look out point over the island of La Graciosa) and The other cave system of Jameos del Agua. This costs about 55 Euros with Lastminute excursions. You could get a hire car however and visit the caves independently. This will obviously help you save a lot of money if you only want to visit...

Advantages: An absolute gem of a town in a stunning location
Disadvantages: Gets very busy...VERY

...the feel of more leisurely, bygone age, with store-fronts dating from 100 years ago. Very nice. We stopped for a spot of lunch at one of the many pavement cafes which line the plazas and side streets. It seemed to me that the speciality in these parts was a selection of tapas as a main course with almost every restaurant and bar offering a 'tapa tipico' dish. I couldn't resist and for around ? 7-8, I treated myself to all sorts of scrummy nibbles...¡Delicioso! After lunch, we had a promenade around the edge of the cliff near the Parador and through some lovely tree-lined parks which led to the mirador and some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. That'll do nicely, I thought. Incidentally, the ubiquitous McDonald's is situated in a prime location next door to the Parador, but the town council in their wisdom have prevented...

Will Sharpe die - doubt it 7 books to go yet

He is unfortunately always dying, presumed dead, missing or bleeding from somewhere. With this installment of Sharpe you will not be disappointed by any of the lack of any of this. His sworn enemy on this occasion is a dastardly chap by the name of Leroux. A master French swordsman and all round ungallant cad. Having unwittingly been taken prisoner by Sharpe at the commencement of the book he gives his gallant oath to not escape. However, shock, horror he does, (otherwise the book would be 5 pages long) killing Sharpe's friend and Colonel. Sharpe gives chase, hounding Leroux into the forts of Salamanca. Leroux was tasked with finding 'El Mirador' a British spy...

Absolutely Fabulous!!!

...of the hotel. There was a nice mix of nationalities AND ages. Many young families and couples and some older ones as well. We normally travel around in a car and visit the sights however this holiday the car was parked and we only used it to travel to mount teide which was great, the scenery was fantastic. The security is good and found this place a safe environment. There is a team of staff who are dedicated to looking after the children and the teenagers they mingle with the teenagers every day and take them of on bike rides, banana boats and organise pool volley ball etc. The evening entertainment is great for the small children and the adults. Casa del Lago restaurant has lovely tables by the lake and is very romantic. El Mirador has a relaxed cocktail bar in Roman style, where you can sit and watch the sunset over La Gomera...

Going down, down...deeper and down

Advantages: Interesting and informative tour of volcanic lava tunnels and caverns. Unspoilt attraction developed to be in harmony with environment. Stunning optical illusion.
Disadvantages: Hard to get to without transportation. Not suitable for very young, elderly or infirm. No catering outlet or much in the way of onsite facilities.

...via the ring road. Follow the LZ1 towards Órzola, and before getting to Órzola, you will see a sign that indicating the way to La Cueva de los Verdes. You can join an organised coach tour, but most of the organised tours will be for a full day and will include most of the other attractions in the north of the island. For example, you could join a full day tour at an approximate cost of 50? (15? for children) and see La Cueva de Los Verdes, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Jardin de Cactus and Fundación César Manrique. Tours can be easily booked in any of the main resorts on the island.
