Mission: Impossible was one of the best action blockbusters of the 1990s, deriving a quality unique amongst its peers from the tension between Brian De Palma's directorial stylisation and the overriding presence of its star and producer, Tom Cruise. Cruise plays Special Forces agent Ethan Hunt, disavowed as a traitor by his own superiors and forced to uncover the true mole to prove his innocence. The original 1960s television series provides not only the wonderful musical motif, but also the layered complexity of false realities and masked identities, which are revealed with the playful conjuring of a Russian doll. This was Cruise's last movie as an angst-ridden youth (next stop was Jerry Maguire and the trials of family life) and he presents Ethan Hunt as caught between his heroic physical prowess and a trusting emotional na¨vety that is painfully punctured by the treachery of those around him. Hollywood heavyweights Jon Voight (Heat) and Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction) are both excellent in support, while the remaining cast reads like an identikit of European cinema, including Emanuelle Beart, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jean Reno (Leon). De Palma's trademark set-pieces include a giant exploding fishtank in Prague, a helicopter chase through the Channel Tunnel, and, most notably, a break-in to steal a vital disc from CIA headquarters in Langley. The moment in the latter when, in almost complete silence, Cruise dangles precariously from a cable and just catches a bead of sweat before it triggers the floor alarm is as sublimely exhilarating as any in American movies of the last 10 years. --Steve Napleton ... less

Mission: Impossible 1 And 2 [DVD] [1996]
With the third, and potentially final, instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise clocking up money right across the globe, the by-now...... more
With the third, and potentially final, instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise clocking up money right across the globe, the by-now obligatory repacking of previous episodes gives those whove missed out to date a chance to bring their DVD collection up to date. The original Mission: Impossible movie remains a terrific action-thriller. Led by Tom Cruises Ethan Hunt, theres a delicious mix of fine casting, cracking plot twists and momentous pace. Yet its director Brian De Palma who steals the show, delivering a handful of his superb trademark set pieces in a way that perfectly matches the source material. Sure, theres the odd crack in it all, the odd ropey effect and a bit of unravelling to do, but this remains an excellent example of what a Hollywood blockbuster could and should be. John Woos M:I:2 is less successful however, although youd still be hard pressed not to enjoy it. Dougray Scott is drafted in as the nemesis this time, and for around an hour of the film, it hangs together well. But Woos movie is less focused and concentrated than De Palmas, and it shows. Its flabby running time and more indulgent action sequences are both forgivable of course, as this is still good, routine, blockbuster entertainment, yet its far from the best work that either the director or star have put in. Still, its a lively double pack you get here, and each movie does serve up the requisite levels of entertainment youd be looking for. Its just the original does it so much better.--Simon Brew ... less

No mission is Impossible
Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp
...This review is on the 2006, trilogy, Mission Impossible 3 starring Tom Cruise, as IFM agent Ethan Hunt. Now I was a really big fan of the first mission impossible, and then kind of let down by the second one, however again like the first one I liked the final instalment, because it was so much different in terms of storyline, style, action scenes and so on.
The film was directed by JJ Abrams...

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' - Cruise control
Advantages: Heart-stopping stunts, explosive effects
Disadvantages: No attempt at character development
...the Hollywood megastar?s age into question when he?s still doing all of his own stunts, and one of those involves sprinting vertically down the tallest building in the world (Yes, he really did that). Cruise clearly is still capable of taking the helm in a high tempo action film, so by all means he should continue doing them.

Another Impossible Mission?
Advantages: Good action sequences
Disadvantages: A bit predictable
...of predictability isn't the worst thing that could happen to it.
All in all, this is the best of the Mission Impossible films, proving that a sequel can be every bit as good as the original, and sometimes better than the films that predecess it. If they keep making the Missions like this, then I'll be happy to keep going to the cinema to see them.
Having purchased only the single disc edition of the film...
