Branson - Missouri

Advantages: Great summer weather, great fun
Disadvantages: not the easist place to get to from UK

...Branson, Missouri We visited Branson as a 2 day trip during our recent holiday to the USA. Why Branson? I don?t really know. OK ? because my wife and mother-in-law wanted to go there so I had to sit and play by myself or go! So how did I enjoy the trip? Was it a worthwhile use of my time (and hard-earned cash)? The answer to both questions is probably yes (only probably cos I?m too tight to spend unless I really have to ? so I?m told). Getting there The nearest airport is Springfield/Branson Regional Airport. There are regular flights into SGF (airport code ? ain?t I clever mommy?) from larger airports such as Chicago, St Louis, Tulsa, Memphis to name just a few. By road, you would need to get onto I44 South from St Louis or I44 North from Tulsa. Basically you head to Springfield, Missouri and then take I65...

Review of General: Missouri

Travel to the top of The Gateway Arch Mork-style - in an egg.

Advantages: Elegant architectural icon. Magnificent vies and photographic opportunity.
Disadvantages: Lenghy queues. Only partially accessible for disable visitors.

...be seen as you queue to travel up the top of the north leg of the arch or you can see the film ?Monument to the dream? showing in one of the theatres in the arch (for a fee). The arch opened to the public on 24th July 1967. Sadly, Saarinen died of a brain tumour in 1963 and never saw his design completed. The arch stands on the exact border between Missouri and Illinois and is the centre-piece of the Jefferson Natural Expansion Memorial Park which is landscaped to reflect the curves of the arch. Getting to the entrance of the arch necessitates a longish walk through the park. Pathways ensure that it is wheelchair accessible and there are seats dotted along the paths to enable walkers to rest - these were most welcome. Introduction: The Arch of St.Louis is dubbed as the 'Gateway to the West' and is probably the most famous attraction in Missouri. At 630ft (192m) tall, and exactly wide as it is tall, this is no small construction. It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eeor Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel. As well as being the tallest habitable structure in St.Louis, it is also the world's tallest monument. The Home of The Entertainer

Advantages: Atmosperic. Fun piano-player. Helpful staff. Low cost. Good parking.
Disadvantages: Furnishing and fitting not authenic representing only an idea of how the home would be.

...historic landmark in 1976 however was nearly demolished a year after when the area was being renovated. In 1983, it was turned over to the state of Missouri opening as a museum in 1991. The house was not the unassuming house it is today. It was built in late 1800s in the newly popular Italianate style of architecture and must have appeared very grand. Some of the features are still evident. The low-pitched roof; the balanced, symmetrical shape and the tall narrow windows topped with roman arches, today appear a little prim and sedate. The building is a red-brick four-plex consisting of four flats (two down and two up). Scott and Belle lived in the upper right flat only whilst the museum now takes up the whole of the building. Right in the middle

Advantages: cheap, friendly, fun
Disadvantages: tornadoes

...Having spent a year on exchange at the University of Missouri in Columbia I got to know the town pretty well. Being pretty much at the centre of the country it was great to visit both the East and West Coast from St Louis. As the first place I ever went to in the States, Columbia provided a big culture shock in comparison to Manchester, England. It is very much a college town and a great deal quieter during spring break and thanksgiving week when there are less students around. Despite being a reasonably small town there were many bars and restaurants for us English students to frequent most noticeably being the Heidelberg, Willies and Friday night at the Fieldhouse. Just outside town on the banks of the MIssouri is what was known as the winery where you can spend the afternoon drinking great wine, looking out over the river...
