...Our DIY story ------------- After painting our living room half and half we needed something to break up the two colours, but what? We didn't want yet another border in our house and a nice crisp line was a no go especially on an embossed wall paper. Solution dado rail. As per usual we went full steam ahead and made do with the tools we had to get the job done. Big mistake! The first piece was quite easy using a wooden mitre box to cut the 45 degree angle and a saw but as to what type of saw it was, I have no idea, I think I will have to ask Handy Andy. Piece of cake we thought that was until we had to cut a new angle right on the end of the dado rail for the next piece to slot in behind. My husband did the sawing whilst I held it in place which proved difficult and after several pieces cut wrong and angles slightly...

Disadvantages: Wife hid behind cushion for all of film ( is this a disadvantage?)

Cutting corners effectively

Advantages: Cuts perfect mitres every time, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Rather bulky and heavy to store

...I always used to hate cutting corners - probably because I am not very good at it. However at last I have found the perfect solution and at a great budget price as well. A few weeks ago when I was browsing through the Screwfix catalogue (yes I know I lead a sad life!) I spotted an offer for the Titan PSM2541 10" Compound Mitre Saw on sale for just £29.99. I am not sure it would have caught my attention quite so much if I hadn't been planning to lay a laminate wood floor in my kitchen and dining room but as I had a job in mind it certainly looked like a great deal. Personally if I am having a laminate floor I prefer to replace the skirtings at the same time as I think it gives a better finish. Advantages: Good concept
Disadvantages: Bargain basement acting

...a checklist of available flourishes. Gimmicks aside, ?Saw? works as a competent serial killer flick, making the audience jump in all the right places. Unfortunately the standard of acting doesn?t live up to the imaginative premise. The main problem is the casting and characterisation of the two leads. The thing is, neither Adam nor Dr Gordon are written to be likeable and the more we learn about them, the less likely we are to empathise with them. In fact I was rooting for their deaths. Though Leigh Whannell may have co-written the script, his lack of acting credentials is very apparent. For the majority of the film he doesn?t look as though he fears for his life. He eventually grows into the character of Adam, but by that time the film is almost over. British-born Cary Elwes has made a career of playing bland good guys and toothless villains...

For a life that's brighter, hit The Mitre.

Advantages: Friendly, close to the river Cam, good food.
Disadvantages: No air conditioning.

As one of the oldest pubs still standing in Cambridge, it has a long history of owners and functions (including a brewery and a pool hall!). But in more recent times, it's just been The Mitre: a typical English pub. So it's no surprise that the locals worried when the place was given a facelift in 2001. There was talk that it had become a supposedly "trendy bar". But it's not. The walls may be lighter, but the dark wood furnishings and grand black fireplace still exist.
