V92 Ready Internal Modem

Advantages: Cheap, Performs well, Reliable, Noise Resistant, V92 Ready
Disadvantages: No visible lights or on-screen indication

...Whilst browsing the shelves of my local Dixon's store, I found a Modular Technology V92 Ready Internal PCI modem. The price was just £24.99 so I thought it worth a try. The modem fits in an empty pci slot and is based on the lucent chipset (www.lucent.com). The card went in easily and the software installed fine on my Windows ME machine. The manual gives detailed instructions on how to install and configure the software, and the box contains trial cd's for aol, compuserve, freeserve etc., fine if you don't have an ISP already. The lucent site has links to the very latest drivers, and the connection speed is as good as any external modem I've used from this location. The unit seems to be very resiliant to noise on the line as I have picked the telephone up downstairs and dialed a number before realising I was on the net...

Review of Fax / modem - plug-in card - PCI - 56 Kbps - K56Flex, V.90

Internal 56K Modem from Creative

Advantages: Easy to fit, good software package included, good brand
Disadvantages: only one line in - no audio sockets or line out

...From the well known Creative (SoundBlaster) stables comes this internal V90 PCI 56K modem. Complete with cable, drivers and some usefull software - Mediaring talk, Quicklink Message Centre and Bitware fax/communications. It only has a line-in socket on the back so you cannot 'daisy-chain' your telephone from this modem. I found the card easy to fit and configure and was up and running in less than 10 minutes - just fit the moden into your case and boot-up, Windows discovered it had new hardware installed and then asked for the location of the drivers, I pointed it at the correct directory on the CD drive and that was it! It connected first and every consequent time at a minimum of 48K and once at 50.3K Good product well worth considering for home use....

So close... Yet so far

Advantages: V.92
Disadvantages: No outline port. Faulty installer software

...I wanted to write a positive op for this product I truly did, and even though most of what follows talks about the good points of this modem and Creative. There was just a few too many niggles with this modem that has dented my appreciation of Creative. (Sorry Creative!) Onto the op! I picked up this modem from Dabs.com for slightly high price of £34 + VAT + P&P about a week ago and sadly enough I’m sending it back! I was in the middle of building 3 computers at once and needed an internal PCI modem so I ran to a well-known company and their modem! I picked this modem mainly on the merits of it being Creative and because its got the new V.92 standard! Review of Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI

Good performer on a budget

Advantages: solid performance, cheap
Disadvantages: still not as good as Diamond

...This is another Creative diversifysation into the modem market. They seem to be moving into a whole number of different markets and good luck to them because i've only had good experiences with Creative products. As for this modem, well its a budget effort from Creative, costing around £25-00. It is internal using the PCI local bus, and is also hardware, so less stress on your system specification. I find this to be a reliable modem with no more disconnections than I ever have with my own Diamond modem so I dont think that there's any problems there. The main thing about this modem is that it offers excellent value for money. Never in my life have I seen a top branded hardware modem for just £25-00. You can usually expect an unbranded modem for this price, so to have the peace of mind of it being a Creative is a very good feeling...

Review of Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI

Not enough benefits to outweigh the problems

Advantages: modem on hold software
Disadvantages: not any faster than my previous modem; uninstallation was a disaster

...I bought the modem for 2 reasons: everything was supposed to be faster (making the connection, downloading, etc) and the modem-on-hold feature. Comparing it with my 7-year-old generic modem, the connection time with the Blaster modem is only about a second faster. Downloads are definitely not faster, and may be slower; phone line conditions vary, so it's impossible to say for sure. Definitely not enough speed advantage to make it worth the money! The modem-on-hold feature is interesting; I've not seen any other modem that advertised outgoing modem-on-hold. I had the opportunity to try both the outgoing and incoming only once each. They worked fine, but they're limited by the time limit the ISP imposes; in my case, 3.5 minutes per call. Caller ID worked also, on the incoming call. Aztech's classy modem

Advantages: Works perfectly as a fax, dialup and along side broadband
Disadvantages: Features you can't use or find

ADSL Modem

An excellent modem

Advantages: reliable, fast

...My ZOOM 56K V90 Dual Modem has been the best modem I have ever had. When I purchased a new machine it came with its own PCI modem, however this soon came out and was replace with my trusty zoom when I started getting cut off from my ISP. I regularly axchieve speeds of up to 52K and with a usual connection at 49,333 bps. The modem is fitted internally and has been in service now for almost 2 years without any sign of breakdown. Trusty, reliable and fast are the best way I can describe it. With a Flash Circuit I can even upgrade it should the need arise. A great modem at a very reasonable price. Customer support is excellent too....
