Munch Moffat Toffee

Advantages: yummy, reminds me of home
Disadvantages: not really available outside of Dumfries and galloway

...There was once upon a time in Britain before confectionary became corporate and the hegemony of Nestlé, Mars and Cadburythat each town and area had their own local specialty of sweets. Berwick had its Cockles, Devon its fudge, Edinburgh its rock and Kendal its famous Mint Cake. In my native Dumfriesshire, the local specialty was and still is Moffat Toffee. Moffat is a small town about 20 miles from Dumfries and is just off the M74 motorway. Once it was a spa resort but is now a busy stop-off point for coach tours heading north to Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands. It is also famous for its sweet shop the Moffat Toffee shop. A family owned business that has been making this local delicacy to a secret recipe since the early nineteenth century. The shop has always been a family business started by Janet Cook Johnstone, now owned...

Review of Moffat MSF616X

Missing in the highlands

Advantages: Unusual and twisting story
Disadvantages: Not enough emotion, conclusion not quite right

...Background: I found this novel in my local library last week. I usually pick up two or three books at a time and this was the third of the three this week. I was running very short of time in my lunchtime so with little thought or opinion I thought I would take a chance on this one. My thinking was if the worst came to the worst and I didn?t like it I don?t have to read it all, I still had the other to. About the author: Gwen Moffat was born in England in 1924. In her long writing career she has produced 35 novels since her first back in 1964. The majority of these 15 have been written in the Miss Pink series. She specialises in Crime thrillers, with the novel I am reviewing today being one of her latest books published in 2003. Synopsis of the book: Ruth Ogilvie is a single mum struggling with the every...

Review of Man Trap - Gwen Moffat

Galloway Getaway

Advantages: Friendly market town with lots to do
Disadvantages: No buzzing night-life (not necesarily a disadvantage)

...A brazen ram dominates the high street of Moffat, a pretty market town in Southern Scotland. But Moffat?s heritage goes much further than its agricultural roots: A Victorian spa town; a stop over for Robbie Burns; a once thriving mill industry; a centre of religious conflict and spectacular scenery, this tiny town (population 2,500) is packed full of things for visitors to do. Yet, Moffat feels as unlike a tourist trap as it could. Our four day stay was too short to enjoy all Moffat?s delights, not least of which is the amazing countryside which is generously peppered with walks from the short and easy to the long and challenging. (There is even a Walking Festival every October.) A fifty pence leaflet from the local Tourist Information Centre is enough to tempt you into your walking boots. As well as remarkable scenery en route...

Review of Moffat (Scotland)

A Picture of the Celtic Kingdoms (sans Bretagne)

Advantages: Both academic and interesting. Expert author. Tries to ground the Celts in reality.
Disadvantages: Fails somewhat - Romantic view of 'osses! Boring at times. Not equal in representations: - Where's Brittany!?

...The Sea Kingdoms by Alistair Moffat is quite a recent book (2001) written about the vestiges of Celtic heritage which can be found today in the British Isles, and in particular in five of the "Celtic Kingdoms" - Ireland, Scotland, Man, Wales and Cornwall. It is based on a journey which was undertaken by the author across the British Isles, although there is very little sense of any particular route, and the book is primarily a scholarly work. This would normally fit "The Sea Kingdoms" quite nicely into the niche of boring academia and yet another attempt at defining "Celticity", but luckily for the reader it doesn't come to that! Moffat is very passionate about his subject, and his speech is fairly eloquent when he talks about how Celtic Heritage can be seen in the landscape of Britain and lead today's "Celt" to hiraeth (Welsh...

Review of The Sea Kingdoms: The History of Celtic Britain and Ireland - Alistair Moffat

A history of whispers and forgetfulness

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...In a time pre-dating the Romans, Britain and Ireland was inhabited by a race of people that are known to history as the Celts. Gradually displaced by the incursions of Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans, these people were either intergrated or marginalised by the later cultures and became only a shadow of their former self. We hear some much about Celtic heritage, but who were they and what remains of them today? On the Atlantic borders there is still whisper of them, Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the English west coast all contain evidence for these people, and Alistair Moffat has set out to find out about these people in The Sea Kingdoms. One of the reasons that these people are so hard to trace is that subsequent invaders have either converted them or changed their virtues to vices and encouraged their downfall...

Review of The Sea Kingdoms: The History of Celtic Britain and Ireland - Alistair Moffat

Steven Moffat has rarely been better

Advantages: Sophisticated, sharp, sexy and most of all, very funny.
Disadvantages: ‘Friends’ was once like that, you know....

...Steven Moffat’s track record in comedy is best described as ‘low-key’ (his big ‘hit’ if any was ‘Joking Apart’ which was a spookily similar format to ‘Seinfeld’ about a stand-up comedian and his life. There’s more to it than that BUT there’s no need to expalin further....the other show to his name was the dreadful ‘Chalk’, a satire of the public education system that failed to appeal to BBC1 audiences). He had no right to have any hits BUT the BBC gave him one last chance and he produced something from the bag something quite substantial. The result was ‘Coupling’. The first series was in production way back in 1998 BUT scheduling conflicts meant that it was shown only in 2000. The question that of course nags is: ‘Why the wait?’...

Review of BBC2: Coupling

Stick around and ease your bones

Advantages: Makes all saddles comfortable for rider, improving stability and position.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive. hair and bits stick

...The Heather Moffat Seat Saver is a suede covered squashy pad to cover the top part of your saddle. It is held in place by straps under the saddle and fits any saddle. The pad lies flat when put on unlike synthetic fur pads, which tend to rise up and down with the rider when new. Available from saddlers and mail order in brown and black priced between £35 and £45. However the quality is excellent. I bought one several months ago to use with a cheap saddle which fits my young, odd- shaped horse well but has a slippery seat. I have been delighted by it as is once in the saddle you are placed in the correct position and seem almost glued there. As this is used on a nervous, at times stroppy thoroughbred I have found it has boosted my morale as well as bolstering my behind. The comfort level of this saddle went from 0-60 in the 2...

Review of Heather Moffat Seat Bone Saver

It's the closest thing to having Russell T Davies in your house.

Advantages: Really honest and insightful
Disadvantages: None

...doubts that we all have, and wrestle with his perpetual procrastination, and google himself to be met with spirit-sapping forum posts. This book also deals with his descision to stop with Dr Who, and the bringing in of Stephen Moffat, and it is touching to see how these descisions were made, and how it affects him. The script pages gave it a new dimension for me, I was so interested to see things the way they could have been. Purely from a design point of view this is a lovely book as well, chunky with smooth pages and nice pictures- it will make a nice addition to anyones bookshelf or coffee table. Summary: A must buy for anyone (unless they can't stand Russell T Davies)...

Review of Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale - Russell T. Davies & Benjamin Cook

The Doctor has refreshingly different adventures

Advantages: Great acting and writing
Disadvantages: None really

...The third of four discs for the 4th season of Doctor Who is an exciting one. Not only does it include the talented writing of Doctor Who favourite Stephen Moffat, but it also marks the introduction of a new part in the Doctor's life, or at least, new for us as viewers. The first two episodes make up a one story, another double episode, and introduces an interesting group of characters including River Song (Alex Kingston). The third episode gives us a completely independent tale with little or no bearing to the grand scheme of things (save for one small split second, but I won't give this away!) The first two episodes, Silence in the LIbrary and Forest of the Dead, finds the Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna (Catherine Tate) in a 51st Century library containing a copy of every book ever written. Seemingly controlled by a little girl, we...
