Diving around Mombasa.
Advantages: Plenty to do and very cheap.
Disadvantages: A very dirty city.
...Mombasa is a rather dirty city on the coast of Kenya. As soon as you get out into the surrounding areas though it changes dramatically. There are the most fantastic sandy beaches with clear blue warm waters. The diving is second to none with something for every one, from small wrecks, to coral walls. The marine life is truly abundant, with sharks, moray eels and turtles in hugh quantitys. On the north coast outside mombasa there is a highly recomendable diving school called Barracuda, well worth a try. Other than diving there is also plenty to do and see. There is a lot of history in the Mombasa area, and also world famous safari's. The safari to tsavo east and west is the best that I went on. If you like good food, then you must also eat at the Tamarind resturaunt as it is world class, especially the Lobster. If you like the sea, then...

Hot and Sticky.
Advantages: Great place to relax and unwind. Hot.
Disadvantages: VERY HOT!
...Sitting at my computer listening to the rain - and now thunder(!) - outside my window, thinking what can I do to make my afternoon a little more interesting. Looking at my reviews I quickly realised I could slip in another travel op on Kenya. This time it is about Mombasa.
***IMPORTANT***
This review is from my visit to Kenya before the shocking terrorist attack on an Israeli hotel and airliner. I guess this proves that no-where is really safe anymore. However, if you want to go to Mombasa - do it. Don't be put off by the terrorists, otherwise, I think, they'll have won...
***MOMBASA***
Mombassa is a port town ? newly designated as a city (the President?s New Year present) ? on the Indian Ocean coast. It is a bustling, vibrant place, sadly lacking in anything resembling the levels of cleanliness we are familiar with in our major...

It has to be the closest thing to Heaven
Advantages: excellent
Disadvantages: you have to come back
...The beaches in Mombasa are absolutely wonderful, bright blue seas, clean sand, it?s just a marvel to look at. To stroll at night time wow that was a moment to be savoured.
It?s so easy and relaxing that the busy roads of the cities seem miles away.
Mombasa itself is a wonderful place, quiet but still lively enough not to get bored. You can go swimming with dolphins and watch the shows if you like.
It is the chief port in Kenya, you can get direct flights from Heathrow or Manchester. If you are lucky enough you may be able to afford to stay in the luxurious Mombasa Serena Hotel.
If you go to Kenya, you?ll have to go to Mombasa, a really good tourist attraction and a place to let our hair down and relax....

MagicalAfrica Safari Kenya
Advantages: Staff willingness to help- nothing is too much trouble
Disadvantages: none
...Truly the best holiday experience I have ever had, we couldn't have found a better safari company during our trip to Kenya this summer.
For us, an African safari was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We saw the most amazing sites, from the hot springs of Lake Bygoria to the majestic creatures that inhabit the Masai Mara plains. These things would have been unforgettable regardless, but it was such a relief that we could enjoy them and not have to worry about the logistics of the tour. Everything was taken care of and Magical Africa even arranged our travel onto Mombasa without taking a shilling in commission. We would definitely recommend Magical Africa to anyone who wants a genuine African safari and are so glad we didn't book a tour through our UK travel agent as originally planned. We really discovered how lucky we had been when we...

Beautiful hotel
Advantages: Great hotel, next to the beach, helpful staff
Disadvantages: Heavy rain can cause powercuts!
...in the country and you will be given a vaccination certificate to prove it. Also you will need malaria tablets. These vary from about 25p per tablet to £2.50. Obviously the more you pay the more effective/ less side effects you should get. We went for malarone, which came in at £2.50 per tablet. You need to take it 2 days before arriving, every day you are there and 7 days afterwards. It is expensive but I had no side effects with it other than really mental dreams
USEFUL INFO:
The flight:
The flight from Manchester to Mombasa took just under 9 hours.
Time difference:
Mombasa is 2 hours ahead of the UK
Currency:
Kenyan Schilling. At present 100 schillings is worth about 75p.
Weather:
Dec-Feb - Summer - About 40 degrees
March - June - Rainy season
July - Sep - Winter - About 25 degrees

If you get bored on the beach
Advantages: beaches, people, hotels
Disadvantages: beach boys
...The beaches around Mombasa are wonderful but it depends where you go!
By far the most spectacular are the beaches south of Mombasa but once you get on the main strip you will be driven mad by beach boys unless you choose your hotel carefully. One of the cheapest and the best is Traveller's Tiwi - here they only allow a few to use the beach - they don't pester guests because the hotel allows them to set up a shop after dinner once a week and this is part of the bargain!
The beach here is magic but it is difficult to swim at low tide.the roooms are excellent and staff and food good. You can walk up the beach from here and it's just palm trees, monkeys, fishermen and beautiful private houses - but go in a group as it is a bit lonely!
The best is the Indian Ocean Beach Club - I've stayed everywhere and this is the best hotel ever...

Great experience Kenya- Mombasa and Nairobi!!!!
Advantages: Great People, Great Nightlife, Great Experience!
Disadvantages: Too many things to see, short time..!!
...Kenya has a lot to offer. Nairobi is the Capital city and Mombasa being the second largest town.
There are very things one can experience in both cities. In Nairobi, there are a lot of entertainment spots. For example, The Carnivore bar and restaurant, (where you can taste game meat plus nightlife)or the Casablanca.. (Really nice)?or you can head off to Westland?s area where there are many clubs and it?s only five minute drive to the city centre.
There are many good hotels too e.g. the holiday inn, Hilton, Panafric, Grand Regency, The intercontinental. You can get pocket friendly hotels; all you have to do is shop around. Alternatively, if you intend to stay longer you can rent a furnished apartment in areas such as Hurlingham or Westland?s. You?ll pay far much less than staying in a hotel.
There is the ?Masaai market? every...

Nyali Beach Hotel
Advantages: Food, staff, location
Disadvantages: None
...We stayed at this 3 star colonial-style, oceanfront hotel in Mombasa for a little over a week and we went half board.
The hotel is only a short drive from the airport which i feel is quite important as there is nothing worse than getting off a long flight and then having to get on a coach for hours to get to your hotel...
Each room has air conditioning, a free newspaper each morning, a refrigerator, telephone, television (with cable & satellite) non-smoking rooms, daily maid service in room, broadband internet access, safe to store valubles, tea and cofee making facilities and a balcony with lovely views.
We had a fantastic time at this hotel and found the hotel staff to be very friendly and helpful.
The hotel was kept very clean and there was lots to do so you never got bored..
Some of the facilities included a hair...

Hakuna Matata
Advantages: Relaxing Kenyan getaway right on a white sand beach and a coral reef
Disadvantages: The main canteen's food!
...----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Nitty Gritty
Capital: Nairobi Languages: English, Kiswahili
Currency: Kenyan Shilling (Although American dollars are widely accepted. The exchange rate is around 0.008969 Kenyan shillings to the GBP, however Kenyan currency is quite unstable and fluctuates frequently. I'd suggest getting your currency very near to your departure.
Approx. flight time: Around 9 hours flight time from London
Time difference: 3 hours ahead.
Visa requirements: You do have to get a visa upon entry into Kenya - you can purchase this at Mombasa airport and it costs 50 US Dollars.
Health: Although recommended, the yellow fever jab is not required. I had it to be on the safe...
