...I recent purchased a newer Ford to replace my ageing, but ever so reliable Escort. I decided on the Ford Mondeo with a little help from my insurance compnay. Im with a company called Ford Insured , whom only insure Fords. I came across the N reg old shape model when my friend came across it when it was put in part exchange at a local dealer. At the price of only £1375 for a 1996 four door Turbo diesel family saloon I decided to buy it as a bit of a brucy bargain. The car has had a bad life and shows several minor battle scars, but Im sure with a bit of tending loving car I will get the car it back into good condition. The engine in this car has got 119000 miles on it, but it still pulls well. I find the car slow when starting from stand still on a steep bank until the Turbo cuts in at about 3500rpm. Another great Mondeo

Advantages: Reliable good handling and cheap to run.
Disadvantages: Depreciation.

Ford Mondeo 1997 Zetec-e (Mk II)

Advantages: Practical, roomy, comfortable, agile, economical, rapid.
Disadvantages: Avoid tatty ones and don't pay too much.

...I now own a white 1997 Mondeo Zectec-e GLX. It goes like a dream. I bought it in Oct 2008 for £595 privately with 64,000 miles and history. It's comfortable and I feel safe driving it, I would recommend at least GLX/ Zetec spec or higher. The gearshift is long, the steering wheel easy to grip. The boot is massive, great for my needs and with a 130bhp powerplant, it goes on to 130mph and 0-60 in 8.7s (having air con on this Mk slows the 0-60 and top-speed time down because it has to have another belt to drive the air-con pump). Mine does not have air con but does have side impact beams, ABS, front-electric windows, rear head restraints, heated mirrors, driver's airbag, electric height adj (drivers only) and 3 rear 3-point seat belts. ...imperial blue) and a modified rear bumper alowing two exit pipes from the exaust system and also not forgetting the lovely 17inch multi spoke wheels which in my mind makes the car somehow look more masculine and butch compared to that of the st24 which is also a fantastic car. over all the car looks more agressive and purpose full and we havent got to the best bit the engine!!! however i will go over that later. inside the mondeo again doesnt disapoint i have as so many others have full black leather interior. some had heated front seats which were not only very comfortable but offered alot of support whilst driving with some enthusiasm and believe me you cant help but do that from time to time. however there were other models that had half leather options which arent as desirable on the second hand market. but to be honest that doesnt matter...

...So what is the worth of a Mondeo in todays modern environment? Another bland offering from Ford or a wonder of modern technology. I have been using a Mondeo 2.0 litre petrol automatic estate for the past 4 months, and whilst the car in automatic form has its disadvantages, the advantages outweigh the weaknesses in terms of a good family car. In Zetec guise the car has a great spec, semi auto climate control, power steering, ABS, remote stereo controls, electric windows all round and alloy wheels are a few just to start a great spec for the car. The petrol version is available in either a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic version. I have the automatic version, and oh dear! The auto box lets the car down BIG time. FORD MONDEO ST200 VERY FAST CAR

Advantages: Fast, Spacious, Reliable, Family Car to win the miss's over for having a fast car
Disadvantages: Limited amount made, expensive inurance

...This is a must car for any Ford enthusiast that has a family to consider as well as wanting a car that will shift when you plant your foot firmly to the floor. The Mondeo ST 200, (201 BHP but the name sounds better rounded off). This is produced from a bullet proof Duratech 2544cc V6 engine. The car has traction control and ABS to help you in any emergency situation. The ST 200 was made from 1999 to 2000 on a T, V, W and X plate due to the revision of the new car registration dates. Therefore these are a rare car to get hold of, especially the 500 limited edition versions. The cars body work was not changed much from the ST24 apart from a couple of minor changes such as the grill. Mondeo bought at auction

Advantages: Comfortable, attractive, nippy and reliable
Disadvantages: A bit heavy on fuel and tyres.

...I bought my silver Ford Mondeo 2.0 LX 16v Estate at Westbury Motor Auctions, Somerset in August 2001 for a total of £4919. It had a FSH from one previous owner, a wine rep, and had 58,000 miles on the clock. Now 19 months later, it has done 75,000 miles and I have kept up the Scheduled Maintenance Services at my local Ford garage. I tend to trash cars however, and it shows it on the outside with several dents. I like the Estate because I have two flat coat retrievers and I keep them behind the dog guard in the boot. The car has plenty of zip for its size and engine capacity but you pay for this in increased fuel consumption which is understandable. To give an example I make one specific journey frquently from Dorset to Sussex, a return journey of 300 miles. It costs me £38 to refill the tank, which averages out at just under 26 mpg...

1997 (R) Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X hatchback

Advantages: Smooth, comfortable drive; spacious; cheap to run, cruise control; heated windscreen
Disadvantages: Electrics (heater, cd player, radio) can be a bit 'iffy'; rust now appearing

...action, though - this is the only car I have ever owned on which grating the gears happens AT ALL. RUNNING COSTS: Apart from fuel (see above @ tyre pressures 35psi), the other major cost on a car is servicing, and the Mondeo has been very good in that respect too. Service intervals are 20,000 miles, with an oil-change at 10,000 (cam-belt change at 40,000 - EXPENSIVE!) and my car has needed (until this year) little or nothing else done to it. It still uses no oil (5W-30W - a very thin spec oil) between services and the CO emissions are well below MOT levels. I have had 2 cat converters - [NB, one was non-Ford, lasted only 18 months, and speed bumps destroy these at a frightening rate!] I have just had my first 'expensive' service (£500), which included 2x tyres and brakes (first set in 100,000 miles!) as well as the first 'repair...
