libertines - up the bracket
Advantages: Some great tunes, Petes Vocals
Disadvantages: Petes drug habit and the bad press it gives the band.
...The Libertines - Up the bracket.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Pete Doherty it seems like you cannot open a newspaper with out some headline or other screaming about his on/off relationship with Kate Moss or his appalling drug habit.
What you don't seem to read about is his music, the thing that gave him his fame in the first place, so im here to tell you about it.
The Libertines formed in about 1998 when Carl barat and Pete Doherty were introduced to each other by Pete's sister, it wasn't long before they were playing guitars, writing songs and planning their careers in the music world.
After this first meeting the boys started to play lots of small gigs with various different band members over the years, even including a 63 year old drummer at one point!
The lads had a few ups and downs but come 2002 they...

Memories of Marisa Monte
Advantages: Sumptuous arrangments and the voice of Marisa Monte.
Disadvantages: 'Rose & Charcoal' is a better album.
...I first remember hearing this album on a warm steamy tropical afternoon in 2003 whilst swinging in a hammock beside a riverbank. I'd kind of forgotten I still had the CD and have only recently started playing it again after rediscovering it at he bottom of my CD collection.
It is all to easy to place Marisa Monte's music into the category of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira - Brazilian Popular Music) - a type of urban popular music that emerged in the 1970s with artists such as Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia and Gal Costa. MPB evolved from the Bossa Nova period that dominated the 1960s and the subsequent 'Tropicália' movement led by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Like European and North American pop music, MPB combines many influences derived from contemporary folk and rock, but often borrows heavily from traditional Brazilian Samba...

Up The Bracket: Everyone Should Own It...
Advantages: A truly stunning album, with a definite swagger and personality. Melodic, very energetic.
Disadvantages: Preconceptions will mean that some people miss out. Ignore them.
...opinion, it's too long, and it's a pity this acoustic track was chosen, since the band would prove on their second album that they could expertly pull off that style of song - the hidden track on their second album, 'France', is stunning. Despite the dip in quality here, the album wouldn't be the same without this track. It breaks up the two halves of adrenaline, and prevents monotony setting in. A very necessary 6/10.
7) Up The Bracket - To the title track, the second half of the album, and a return of the energy from before. A roaring, relentless anthem, perfectly suited to Doherty's vocal style. Every aspect of this song is superb, from guitars, to drums, to singer. The low key, garage-y production is ideal here. A wonderful track, worth the wait of the previous song. 10/10
8) Tell The King - A slower track following the raw electricity...

Punk-poets first release, Up the Bracket, defined a genre.
Advantages: Uplifting, great value for money, inspiring.
Disadvantages: Parental Guidance for Lyrical Content
...Up The Bracket was the debut album from The Libertines- a four piece post-punk revival band from London. They made their name playing in various bars around London, most noticeably Filthy Macnasty's Whiskey Cafe in Islington.
The album is definitely my favourite of all time and is awash with clever lyrics, distorted guitar riffs, screaming and shouting. The opening track, Vertigo, is a mixture of all of this and throws you right in the mood for the rest of the album. The sound is hectic and fierce but never unprofessional. There is definitely an element of The Clash in the sound and this isn't surprising due to the fact it was produced by Mick Jones. At 39 minutes long, it is a relatively short album but even if it were an hour long, I think it would still seem too short.
In my opinion the highlight of the album is Time For Heroes. It...

Up The Bracket - The Libertines
Advantages: What we have all been waiting for
Disadvantages: Pete Doherty pressed the self destruct button
...get them out for the boys in the band". Once again not out of place on a Pistols album however the riffs are more intelligent, the lyrics are better. I am in love with this song for all eternity. 10/10.
Radio America - Acoustic guitars?!?!?!? A tune for the people who love Sundays. I think this is a geography lesson as it mentions New Brighton (a place around Liverpool isn't it?), Tokyo, America (obviously) and Mexico... Sounds like it has been done at 3am on the comedown from a fix of heroin. A bit strange, I don't really dig it but others probably would. 7/10.
Up The Bracket - Here we go again, punk, punk, punk, PUNK! It sounds ordered here (for once!) but live it will be rag-tag. To some it is blindingly obvious it is about Doherty and Barat's relationship, basically how they can hate each other and love each other at the same time...

Monte Carlo Or Fake Bust
Advantages: Richest Freak Show On The Planet
Disadvantages: Gaudy, Tacky and Fake
...Prelude
In August of this year I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks travelling Provence and the South Of France. Here is what I had written at the time of my Monte Carlo experience...
After spending the last few weeks travelling the south of france in a motorhome, i thought i would share some of my experiences with you lucky lot and not least because i recieved the credit card bill through the post today!
The journey into Monte Carlo is quite unimpressive, very industrial and stark contrast to the picturesque landscapes surrounding Monte Carlo. You get the first taste of its financial implications by the increased frequency of the tolls upon its approach. It seemed like there was a toll booth on the roads every 10 mins as opposed to the every couple of hours we had experienced around Provence.
We arrived at night, a bit...

The Full 'Del Monte!'
Advantages: Vegan. No Artificial colours, preservatives, flavours or sweeteners. Only 78 calories per lolly. 100% RDA for Vit 'C'.
Disadvantages: Only sold in boxes of 4, so not available individually.
...A chance for me to enjoy a respite and any relaxation is a rare occurrence during the school summer holidays, and to actually concur with some hot sunny weather is even more obscure. But just like a lottery win, these things do happen, and once the children had temporarily vacated the premises in order to pursue their hectic social lives, it was my prompt to hit the sun bed and lap up some rays.
Twas a lovely day too, laying there, my mind drifting off to a fantasy beach on a fantasy isle... Somewhere tropical, where warm ebbing waters tickled white sandy shores. Basking in the sun and dreaming... aaaa this was the life... I was suddenly gripped by a desire to compliment my newfound freedom with my latest discovery whilst in Sainsburys, a Del Monte Pineapple 'Fruit Ice' lolly.
Although Del Monte now makes wide ranges of juices...

The Monte Carlo - A Very Safe Bet for Fresh Fish
Advantages: Excellent selection of fresh fish. Great service.
Disadvantages: A little pricey.
...INTRODUCTION
For me, one of the undoubted benefits of going on an island holiday is that you are usually not far from a fish restaurant. I do like a well grilled fresh fish, served simply with a wedge of lemon and a healthy sprinkling of parsley, black pepper and sea salt. On our almost annual visits to Cyprus, we stay in the Larnaka area and, as you can imagine, the seafront is teeming with eating establishments clamouring for our custom. I am a fairly reserved sort, and find the sidewalk ?greeters? - whose job it is to pull you toward the garishly displayed menu boards obstructively placed in the middle of the pavement - very off-putting. This sort of hard sell is not an experience I particularly enjoy, so a few years ago, I was very pleased to find an excellent fish taverna ? the Monte Carlo - a stones throw away from...

Monte, You Terrible Count
Advantages: Good old fashioned romp
Disadvantages: Not enough romping
...for the incarcerated Edmond until a chance encounter with fellow prisoner Abbe (Richard Harris) leads him to formulate an elaborate plan to get his own back on those who betrayed him. His revenge keeps him sane, and many years after his capture, he is finally ready to re-emerge in his new guise as The Count of Monte Cristo, and exact his revenge?
* * * * *
Remade 10 times (3 times for TV), you have to start wondering whether or not Hollywood have any original ideas left. Fortunately, this is not an ill-fated attempt at polishing a turd ? it?s a surprisingly engaging old-fashioned yarn. I can?t say I?ve seen any of the other attempts to bring Alexandre Dumas? classic novel to the screen, but this suitably impressed me.
***ACTING UP***
Jim Caviezel is one of those actors whose face you?ll know, but probably won?t remember for doing a superb acting...

Monte Carlo
Advantages: Beautiful beaches
Disadvantages: Nothing to do
...My boyfriend and I went to the South of France in the summer, we stayed in Nice after looking at the horrendous prices of the hotels in Monte Carlo! Then we planned for our first day to get a bus to Monte Carlo. The bus ride was great, they were more like coaches; comfy seats, seat belts, tv, AC, a toilet, everything!
We knew that Monte Carlo was a very luxurious city, so thought that we would be living the high life for the day, unfortunately not!
When we got off the bus, we went into the local shopping precinct. We entered on royal red carpets (which are all over monte carlo!) We were with our backpacks and wearing relatively scruffy clothes, and the whole time we were there, we were looked down on. We knew that there were going to be people alot better off than us, but we didn't expect to be treated like this.
We went to...
