The UNOFFICIAL Entrance to Monza
Advantages: Exudes history, exciting race circuit, rural quiet small town with character, beautiful cathedral and scenic views nearby
Disadvantages: None really..Public transport limited on sundays
...Say the word MONZA! And one?s heart fills with joy and excitement you think Formula One, land of Ferrari .. you are in seventh heaven! Well almost! This may not be everyone?s reaction but it certainly is mine! I recently had the opportunity to visit Monza and it doesn?t disappoint and offers far more beyond Formula One racing with its rural charm and interesting historical features.
MONZA ~ WHERE IS IT?
Monza is approximately 10km North of Milan in the Lombardy region of Italy. It is the capital of the Brianza area of Lombardy. Brianza originally got it?s name from an old saying, ?S?è messa un po? di Brianza in faccia? which is translated as ?She?s put some Brianza on her face?, it?s another word for a fake suntan! Before the economic growth of the 1950?s many of the rich would come to the hilly regions of Brianza in the hope...

MY DAY AT MONZA through The Hole
Advantages: High-speed circuit racing circuit, Home to Italian Motor Sport, exudes history
Disadvantages: None I can think of…
...In March this year, I was lucky enough to plan a short trip to Milan, with the hope of visiting Monza, home to the Italy’s Ferrari and land of the Tifosi. This is every Ferrari fan’s dream and is a definite must for any racing fan. The Monza circuit is one of the oldest racing circuits along with Silverstone and provides some exhilarating action with the highest speeds possible along the straights and heavy braking on tricky chicanes. The circuit has a rich history and some of the best racing drivers the world has ever known have raced here. This is one day I will never forget…
Before I highlight the beauty of this racing circuit, I will mention where it is and how to get there, or how I got there - which was a rather long route...and the feelings and sounds on approach to this great circuit. This may give you...

Monster Monza
Advantages: exciting
Disadvantages: ferrari home ground
...A circuit above all others that exudes history with the original track built way back in 1922 still recognisable. Home to the Italian Grand Prix Monza is always a race full of atmosphere; this is the home of the prancing horse, Ferrari, and their passionate followers, the Tifosi. The circuit itself mildly resembles a modern-day Circus Maximus, fast and probably the closest you will see to an F1 Oval circuit.
The history of the track is outstanding - it holds tha fastest ever F1 race time recorded way back in 1971 by Peter Gethin in a time of 1 hour and 18 minutes. It was also the closet race of all time with 5 cars crossing the finish line within 1 second of the winner.
Tomorrow sees the 50th F1 race held - the most of any circuits - Damon Hill still holds the fastest ever speed around this circuit of an average of 155 miles...

USE YOUR HEAD! WEAR A HELMET.
Advantages: LOOKS. COMFORT. FIT
Disadvantages: EXPENSIVE IF NOT FREQUENTLY USED
...The Giro Monza helmet ranges in price from anywhere btween £50 and £70 at the time of this review. I paid £80 for mine a few months ago. I don't regret one penny of it as a helmet is invaluable, in my opinion, when cycling (my previous one ended up in 3 pieces when I landed headfirst on a roadside rock).
The Giro Monza is lightweight - even the size large for my big head comes in at only 310g - and extremely comfortable. Smaller sizes are obviously lighter still.
The comfort is aided by the Roc-Loc system which allows you to place the helmet on your head and adjust the fit in situ, so no time consuming adjustments and readjustments are needed to individual straps. It also has 24 air vents to allow for ventilation and cooling, along with cool max pads inside which help to wick away sweat. These pads can be removed for washing if needs...

For Fromula 1 lovers
Advantages: Formula 1
Disadvantages: Boring
...Monza is world-wide known for its Grand prix. This is in fact the main attraction. There is also a park and a Villa there, I think the name is Villa Reale, but do not quote me on this. I have never been there for the Grand Prix myself, but I visited the park. Quite frankly, it is nothing special, or, to put it better, there are better places to go, even in lombardia, the region where Monza is. My advice, therefore, would be to go there for the Grand Prix only, assuming you are into racing, or give it a miss all together!...

Home of motorsport and the Tifosi.
Advantages: Great track
Disadvantages: Intimidating atmosphere
...Monza is famous for being the home of Italian motor racing. In fact, Italy is the only country to hold 2 grand prixs a year regularly by claiming one as the San Marino grand prix.
It is also the home of the banked curves from the old 50s track.
These still remain at the circuit but are no longer used.
Every year, the Ferarri mad Italians (the Tifosi) make the pilgrimage to Monza to watch their scarlet Machines do battle with the worlds elite motor car producers in order to be Formula 1 constructors champions.I say CONSTRUCTOR'S CHAMPION because they dont follow the drivers. They follow the car. They do not care if Michael Schumacher is Driving or Margaret Thatcher, as long as Ferarri wins.
Because of this, it is a very intimidating place t odrive if you are not in an Italian Red car.
Eddie Irvine discovered this to his cost. In 1999...

Really hard on brakes.
Advantages: Very Fast
Disadvantages: Hard on brakes.
...The Monza circuit is the home of the Italian Grand Prix and is a mecca for the fanatical Ferrari fans. The circuit was opened in 1922 and has been the home of the Italian Grand Prix since 1950.
This very fast circuit is one of the quickest of the year with cars reaching speeds of 220 mph. The long straights and sweeping corners mean that most of the cars are set up with low wing levels, but this provides problems when going into the slow corners where a terrific load is put onto the brakes. It only takes a small misjudgement by a driver for him to overshoot a corner.
The circuit tends to favour the high powered cars, although the stresses on the cars make reliability a major factor.
The chicane at the first corner has often been the scene of an incident at the start of a race and before the 2001 Grand Prix the drivers were...

Better Late Than Peas
Advantages: Exciting bits
Disadvantages: Boring bits
...A slight break in form for this F1 review, as rather than sitting at my computer with a glass of something citrus based, I find myself munching on Presunto Ruffles (Agora Onda Maiores!) and sipping Casal Mendes on a balcony, somewhere near the most south westerly corner of the Iberian peninsular. This is of course means I couldn’t watchthe race on my beloved ITV, more on that later though.
* The Track *
Very similar in style to Hockenheim, Monza’s nature is very much stop. Go. Stop. Go. Twisty bit. The tracks chicanes can often cause chaos and I’m sure I don’t have to remind everyone what happened last year.
If you’re taking your home made Formula One car to Monza it’s probably a good idea to just take the rear wing off to reduce drag as much as possible for the long straights. It wouldn’...

Specialist Alfa importers and Garage services
Advantages: Friendly personal service; Experts in their field; Good value; after sales
Disadvantages: May not be local to you.
...As soon as I saw the Alfa 156 back in 1997, I knew I had to have one. Two years later, in 1999 I was fortunate enough to afford one.
Having looked at a few franchised dealers, I was put off by their hard sales tactics. I then happened to come across a brand new imported fantasy blue 156 advertised at Monza Sport. This was the exact colour I wanted (it?s quite rare for this car?for any car for that matter), and in the spec I wanted (it had to have a sport pack, in my opinion, without this the 156 looks ugly).
So the wife and I made the long trek from Kent to Cowfold in West Sussex. On first impressions the garage doesn?t look anything fancy, but from the number of new and nearly new Alfas standing on the forecourt, I knew this was a specialist outfit.
I met the joint owner John Griffiths, (brother Bryn is the other one). The car I...

Tifosii make it all
Advantages: Good, fast corners, fast circuit, good overtaking opportunities, Tifosi
Disadvantages: Not a perfect layout
...The hype before a race at Monza is a little exaggerated. The Tifosi are mostly responsible for this although they do make the atmosphere at race-time electric and as I am a Michael Schumacher fan, they make it for all the right reasons in my opinion.
However, Monza is not much of a race-track compared to the magnificent SPA circuit in Belgium which will host the 2000 season's venue in Belgium, this weekend. I am quite excited.
Monza is a fast track which provides a lot of action. Hakkinen in tears, Coulthard taking Irvine round the outside on the last third gear sweeper leading on to the pitstraight (the name of the corner evades me at this time). It is undoubtedly a much better venue than Silverstone but it is not, in my view, THE best circuit although it isn't far off. Suzuka, Spa, Imola, Monaco - its there somewhere. When...
