Review of Mobil 10W/40 Motor Oil by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Quality oil.
Disadvantages: Has to be paid for.
...Right, a review on car engine oil, this is going to be difficult.
We will start off by getting the boring stuff out of the way, firstly the "standard". SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. The SAE classifies motor oils according to certain viscosities (thickness) and temperature ranges at which they can be used. Car and equipment manufacturers also specify which oil should be used for a particular temperature operation.
It is important to note that the viscosity and temperature range values listed by automobile and equipment manufacturers, are meant for petroleum oil.
The same viscosity oil in a premium quality synthetic will have drastically lower cold temperature flow and operation properties as well as drastically higher high temperature operational properties.
Basically the rating works like this, 10w/40...

CASTROL GTX is oil right by me! . . .
Review of GTX 20W/50 Motor Oil by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Cheap quality oil.
Disadvantages: Overshadowed by synthetic oil.
.... . .
Castrol has been on the go now for a lot of years, the company being founded by a Mr Charles Wakefield back in 1899, yes 1899! The history of the company is one that has long since been associated with motor racing, in fact the land speed record alone has been broken an amazing 21 times by cars using Castrol lubricants.
The oil is still used today by just about everyone you can think of, from emergency services to armed forces, plus the ordinary uses by people like haulage companies, taxis, locomotives, and of course the majority of us car drivers.
Castrol GTX is a mineral based motor oil, Acconding to Wilkpedia, this is :-
"Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes (typically 15 to 40 carbons) [1...

* Castrol Mile High Miles Club. . .
Review of Castrol GTX High Mileage by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Good for older engines.
Disadvantages: None really.
...CASTROL HIGH MILES or MILE HIGH OIL! .
This brand of oil reviewed here is known as Castrol High Mileage motor oil, it is non synthetic oil, or more commonly known as a traditional mineral based oil. There are no synthetic additives added.
The viscosity of this oil is 15W-50 15 means the thickness of the oil in low temperatures, W means it complies with the requirements for winter conditions, and 50 means the thickness of the oil at high temperatures.
This newer synthetic type oil may be more suited for newer engines, but the old mineral oil is best in engines over say ten years old, or 100,000 miles, although different engine makers recommend different things nowadays. Synthetic oil has become really popular, and has been in production for many years now.
The old mineral oil still has it's place though, and this particular one...

One uses Mobil one . . .
Review of Mobil 1 5W/30 Motor Oil by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: See review.
Disadvantages: None for new engines.
...MOBIL 1is a fully synthetic motor oil. Acconding to Wilkpedia, this is :-
"Oil consisting of chemical compounds which were not originally present in crude oil (petroleum) but were artificially made (synthesized) from other compounds. Synthetic oil could be made to be a substitute for petroleum or specially made to be a substitute for a lubricant oil such as conventional (or mineral) motor oil refined from petroleum. When a synthetic oil or synthetic fuel is made as a substitute for petroleum, it is generally produced because of a shortage of petroleum or because petroleum is too expensive. When synthetic oil is made as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum, it is generally to provide superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils."
Basically synthetic oil is better than the old...

* FREE BEER! . . .
Review of Mobil 20W/50 Motor Oil by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Good old fashioned multigrade mineral oil.
Disadvantages: Newer cars may be better off with synthetic oil.
...Sorry - Did I say free beer? - : ) I meant :-
This is a mineral oil, used for engines that are over a certain age.
Background to oil types:-
The quality of all oil used in the motor industry is controlled by the SAE which stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. The SAE grades motor oils according to certain viscosities (thickness) and also temperature ranges at which they are used. Equipment and Car manufacturers also specify which oil is to be used for a particular operation.

keep going well keep going Shell
Review of Shell 10W/40 by
raregreyastra
Advantages: good performance protectsand maintainsengine lifeand performance
Disadvantages: more expensive than some
...Shell Ultra 10W-40 provides maximum engine cleansing for performance motoring and protecting your car. The product is totally synthetic motor oil that is ideal for modern and sports cars with engines that run faster and hotter in order to achieve maximum power, fuel economy and reduced emissions.
It is formulated with special cleansing agents to clean up and lock away harmful dirt and deposits thus reducing engine wear.
Being a synthetic based lubricant it has excellent long-term oxidation stability which prevents degradation of the product. This in turn enhances engine protection.
Synthetic motor oils in general and this one is no exception have by nature a high shear stability all oils contain complex polymers and it is these that breakdown under use causing deterioration in oil quality and thinning of the oil. The high shear...

Review of Mobil 1 15W/50 Motor Oil by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Economic, readily available.
Disadvantages: May not be the one for your engine.
...* Mobil 1, sounds like U.S. President's plane! . . .
The brand of oil known as MOBIL 1 - 15W/50, is a non synthetic or traditional mineral based motor oil. Wikipedia says,
This oil is described as :-
"Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a transparent, colourless oil composed mainly of alkanes (typically 15 to 40 carbons) and cyclic paraffins, related to white petrolatum. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil comes in light and heavy grades, and is often found in drug stores."
I do hope you are following this as I may need a little help later on.
Basically, the newer synthetic type oil is more suited for more modern engines, but the old traditional mineral oil is best in engines over say ten...

*Magnetic oil? Oily magnet? . . .
Review of Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Good stuff, better website.
Disadvantages: It can "Cost the Earth"
..., the oil does stay in bearings and moving parts longer, and that is why it it supposed to be so good.
It is made to provide more protection than other oils during that critical start up period, They do say that 90% of engine wear is caused during the first 10% of the driving time.
It is designed to cling to your engine, forming an extra layer that protects during start up and beyond.
It is also supposed to bond to metal surfaces, making engine parts more resistant to wear.
It provides protection for all driving conditions and styles.
Those concerned about the environment, may also like to check the website, you will find basic facts about motor oil and the environment, plus a warning about disposal of your old oil.
Make sure you dispose of your used motor oil properly - it can be recycled!
Please read the next paragraph and think about...

A Good Substitute For Castrol GTX
Review of Nivea Bath Care Pampering Shower Oil by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: Could use it as a substitute for motor oil.
Disadvantages: It's *SUPPOSED* to be a bath and/or shower product!
...out of my sorely abused torso. (Builders tend to be really mucky pups!)
Nivea claim that this shower oil is suitable for all skin types, and in particular anyone with dry skin, and that it contains “55% caring oil”. I don’t know exactly what “caring oil” actually consists of; in fact, I haven’t a damned clue what “caring oil” consists of. But Nivea assure me (on the bottle) that it’s an innovative new formula, so I suppose I have no choice but to settle for that (inadequate) explanation.
So it was into my spanking new shower cubicle (luvverly!) to give it a try out.
~ ~ This “pampering shower oil” comes in a clear plastic, 200ml bottle, with a blue flip top. So it’s easy to see how much you have left, and easy enough to dispense. The oil itself is a kind of clear, medium brown/orange colour, which reminded me of Castrol GTX Motor Oil. You...

* An EP you can't listen to . . .
Review of Castrol EP80W-90 by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Easy to use.
Disadvantages: None.
...Castrol is a very old established company, and such a well known brand, they hardly need introducing, and now they have a very modern website, which is pretty good. It contains info on it's sponsorship with football and motor racing, as well as other interesting stuff like a car buyer guide, tyre checks, "How to" guides etc. I am not being sexist, but a lot of things here would be of use to women drivers, men too of course.
Take a look, you may learn something, as well as enjoying it:-
http://www.castrol.co.uk
Talking of football, this is easy to use without spilling or dribbling. It comes in small bottles, ideal top up size. Some gearboxes however, require the oil to be pumped in.
As for the cost of this stuff, all I can say is simply shop around, most supermarkets now sell this stuff, at lower prices than motor accessory shops...
