The ultimate European motorway guide

Advantages: Good fun experience
Disadvantages: Complicated driving system across Europe

...[*UPDATED*] In the UK, the motorway speed limit of 70Mph is just right, considering the fact that if you were in Germany, the speed limit for the auto-ban (if this is the correct spelling) is 100Mph or more, a racer’s dream. I have just compiled a guide on motorway speed limits and rules and regulations across Europe. Country Motorway Austria:130 kph Belgium:120 kph France: 130 kph Germany:none unless shown Italy:130 kph Luxembourg:120 kph Netherlands:120/110 kph Spain:120 kph Switzerland:120 kph Open Road 100 kph 90 kph 110 (90 when wet) 100 kph 90 kph 90 kph 80 kph 100 kph 80 kph Town 50 kph 50 kph 50 kph 50 kph 50 kph 60 kph 50 kph 60 kph 50 kph Alcohol Limit ?? 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.8 ?? 0.5 0.8 0.8 Driving Licences; Minimum Ages; Children and seat belts. Motorway breakdowns - Don't

Advantages: See opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion

...The first, and most important bit of advice I can offer you regarding breaking down on a motorway is quite simply - don't. Preparation is the key here, make sure that you and your vehicle are fit for travelling on the motorway. Has it been serviced at the recommended intervals? Are all your under bonnet fluids at the right levels as indicated in the handbook? Are your tyre pressures right (remember, many manufacturers recommend different pressures for heavily loaded vehicles or those with several passengers)? Do you have enough fuel? Try and fill up before the motorway if you can. Not only will this help avoid running out, but you can also avoid paying service station prices for fuel. So, what if you do break down? Well, getting to the hard shoulder is the key. If at all possible, try and avoid stopping in a running lane...

Clever Motorways

Advantages: Cuts journey times, Safety Maintained, Less chance of being caught speeding
Disadvantages: Safety lobbiests a little pissed off

...The motorway is a clever thing. Consisting of three wider than usual lanes all travelling in the same direction, with a central reservation involving a crash barrier which has been engineered to bounce any cars back into the direction of flow should they unwittingly veer off. In the days when the M1 was first opened, there was no speed limit. Jaguar cars (the type Inspector Morse drives) took advantage of this and could be seen travelling at 160mph. Unfortunately, in these days, although this was a quality car, it had poor safety features and braking in comparison to todays modern cars, so proved dangerous. The Government intervened and imposed a speed limit of 70 mph. Now today, even the most basic new car has better safety features than cars of this period. So therefore it would be safe to have a higher speed limit...

NO MOTORWAY SPEED LIMITS

Advantages: getting rid of congestion
Disadvantages: ok at first you'd get the usual jokers racing

...I think they should do away with motorway speed limits except for extreme weather conditions and for heavy goods veicheles. To educate the people the government should introduce a separte driving test for motorway driving as it is not part of the current driving test and motorway lessons are optional. You should need a test pass to drive on the motorways. The autobahns in germany have no limits and have less accidents. Congestion would be made obselete under my proposals and because if the limits were reduced congestion would build up causing more polution whereas my idea would have every car running optimaly. Ever been on a deserted motorway at about 3 in the morning just wishing you were home, in a car that wouldnt break sweat at 130? email me if you agree Id appriciate some feed back....

Motorway Speed Limits

Advantages: not applicable
Disadvantages: not applicable

...I heard on the radio yesterday that the government are going to REDUCE motorway speed limits to 50 mph. Do you think it is a good idea? Because I don't...and here's why 1) Currently the limit is 70mph and most drivers do 80+ mph. 2) Lorries are currently restricted to 55mph and coaches to 65mph (I think I'm right here, but it could be 50 and 60 respectively). so... if the limit was made to 50mph, vehicles of all types would (supposedly) be travelling at 50mph. Can you imagine following the same lorry for 3 hrs or whatever on a motorway at 50mph? what is the point of motorways if they are no quicker (if you can only do 50 on the motorway then you may as well take the A-roads or dual carriageways instead where you can do either 40 or 60 - and it wouldn't be as boring as the motorways!). fine but this would lead to...

Should we reduce motorway speeds?

Advantages: More accidents, so more money for car manufacturers who make parts.
Disadvantages: More accidents, more injuries, more people taking other roads and slower journies.

...Motorways are the safest roads in the UK. This is due to several reasons. 1- you are not driving on a road where you can cross into oncoming traffic. 2- The traffic generally travels at a good speed and therefore is on the motorway for less time than traveling slower on other roads. 3- The motorways do not have sharp turns and are generally well sign posted so you do not have to make rash fast decisions. I do not think that motorway speed should be reduced. This would result is people being on the motorway longer, so therefore would get more tired and maybe fall asleep or lose concentration. Secondly if everyone was traveling slower accidents would not be reduced as people would travel closer, and because they are not concentrating, fail to brake in time. The police for a while wanted to put speed limits up on motorways to get...

Motorways........where speed belongs

Advantages: Faster travel. Fewer accidents. Less stress. Reduced Road Rage incidents
Disadvantages: Increases to 1)traffic in towns and villages. 2)accident. 3)Strees. 4)Road rage incidents

...So the Government wants to reduce the speed limit on motorways? Why have motorways at all. Today's cars are faster and safer than ever before. Motorways are there to get people from A to B in the shortest time possible and to keep the bulk of traffic away from our towns and villages. It is the residents of towns and villages that will pay the penalty for slower motorways. We all know how frustrating it is to be held up by a slower road user. Is this not one of the main causes of Road Rage? If the motorway speed limit was reduced to 50mph, there would be far more drivers breaking the law than there are now. Better to increase the speed limit for cars and bikes and enforce correct use of lanes. It's really annoying when travelling on an almost empty motorway, correctly using the inside lane, only to come upon a driver travelling at 50...

Rip off Britain on the motorway

Advantages: Clean toilets
Disadvantages: Poor service, poor food, high prices, some staff

...M for Motorway service stations, this is where I put on my Victor Meldrew hat & have a right good rant about them. For those that use them 'now & then' they probably come as a welcome relief during a tiring journey. It's a place to get a hot drink on a cold day or a cool drink on a hot day, the opportunity to use the toilet or to get a daily newspaper. However, for those like me that use them regularly they don't live up to expectations. The phrase 'rip off Britain' was coined for a number of things but I'm sure the motorway service station was top of that list. I use many of them over the Northern part of the UK & sometimes in the south east & south west but less often. The first problem you encounter is when you enter these places; the idea of a rest area is simply to rest. Tiredness when driving can be very dangerous & creeps...

Motorway driving

Advantages: get somewhere quickly
Disadvantages: inconsiderate people

...I hate it? and no I have never had an accident. I tend to drive on the motorway quite a lot, I visit cat shows up and down the country and my in laws live at the other end of the country from me so I really don?t have a choice but it scares the life out of me. For example, last night I had to go to Birmingham to pick up a kitten and to drop one of my cats off for her ?honeymoon?. My son and I decided we would go, my husband didn?t want to join us and as my daughter is only 2 we left her at home. We set off from our house at about 4.30, by 5.15 we had stopped at services to see if we could see a problem with the car as people kept flashing their headlights at us. It would have taken one person to stop behind us and tell us what the problem was and they could have prevented what could have been a serious incident. When we couldn...
