Basic Multifunction Printer - Impossibly Low Price

Advantages: Very low price, carries out all basic tasks well, photo-print quality is excellent
Disadvantages: Basic feature set, low-quality scanner, ridiculously high-priced cartridges

...I bought this printer to replace the PIXMA ip1600 which I had before, prompted by the £20 cashback offer Canon was running at the time. This allowed me to purchase a multifunction machine for cheaper than replacing the cartridges on the ip1600! Unfortunately the cashback offer has now expired, but this machine is still available at an incredibly low price for the features. Out of the box, the MP210 is averagely sized for a multifunction machine, coming in at round about 45cm x 35cm x 17cm (not counting the headspace it needs for the scanner lid to open). The buttons on the front panel are somewhat lacking in description, meaning that you will almost certainly have to delve into the instruction manual to find out what they do. Essentially, there are buttons for colour and B&W copy, 'Stop', 'Scan', 'Settings', 'Fit to Page', 'Paper...

BT voyager 210 broadband modem

Disadvantages: Beware: Won't last much longer than 12 months

...I got this BT voyager 210 router from MADASAFISH when I subscribed to their broadband service back in 2006 as a 'free' router (you have paid them back + admin charges if you switch or unsubscribe before the 12 months contract is due). It comes as shown in the picture in the box, quite generours: one wired router, TWO ADSL microfilters, one AC adaptor, one ADSL telco cable, 1 USB cable, 1 Ethernet cable, one CD-ROM (with installation guide, user manual, driver and utilties), one small piece of quick installation guide. This modem supports ADSL2 as well however I haven't got ADSL2 i.e. not tested. The basic installation is quite easy: connection the modem to the phone socket according to instructions. Advantages: High quality printing, quiet and looks good

...ugly in an industrial way but that was a popular style a few years back. It produced pretty good document and photo prints and the scanner was adequate for documents but not of a standard to copy photos. When coming to choose a new printer these were the characteristics I was interested in. It had to print to a high standard, the scanner needed to be better and I didn't want it to look like an ugly lump of corporate kit with attachments falling off all the time. Despite painfully setting up the fax functionality first time round I have never received or sent a fax using the HP, in fact I don't think I've faxed anything this century so that functionality was dispensable. Canon MP620 All in one Printer

Advantages: Excellent Phot prints, excellent scanning, wireless capability
Disadvantages: Slightly bulky, wireless can be tricky to set up

...I bought this printer a few months ago to replace an old hp all in one which had lasted for a long time and sadly the print quality had diminished. With a large amount of options on the market I shopped around and came across the Canon MP620. It seemed to have all the features I was after including scanning, printing, card reader, photocopyer and wireless networking. Please note there are 2 other similar models in the range and as far as I know the MP610 is older and not wireless but slightly cheaper. Alternatively the MP630, which is more expensive is also not wireless but is faster in producing more prints per minute. So far, since using it I can report that the MP620 is an excellent all round printer. Great quality prints and excellent scanning makes it perfect for my needs. The wireless networking took a little time to setup...

Canon mp220 - good printer but unreliable

Advantages: 3 functions, borderless printing
Disadvantages: unreliable and not durable

...was decent - the ability to scan and photocopy as well as print was a bonus. The quality of prints was good although not excellent as far as photo quality is concerned. The MP220 was also capable of borderless printing which is an advantage that many other printers do not have. The printer takes one colour cartridge and one black one (the numbers 40 and 41 are the high capacity cartridges). All in all although when the printer worked it was half decent, the reliability and durability issues make it, in my opinion, not a worthwhile purchase....
