in the blue mp3/cd player
Advantages: Good basic player
Disadvantages: reliability lets it down
...I was given this player to keep me occupied on my many long bus and train journeys.
THE PLAYER
This is a Japanese mp3 and CD player, which comes in a silver and blue top with a grey base. It is 13cmx13cmx2½cm which is about average size, so its more bag sized than pocket sized. It comes with an adapter and ear bud type headphones. It only has a small display area, so only displays limited information on it, such as which track and album or how long the song has been playing for. There are also little icons to display what modes you have it on, which are discussed later. The buttons are fairly small, so not fab it you are fumbling about in the dark or going under a tunnel, or if you have any arthritic type problems that makes it difficult to press small buttons. The overall appearance is nice and suitable for male or female...

CD/MP3 player of kings
Advantages: MP3 playback and long battery life
Disadvantages: The random function doesn't work properly
...Whenever I?ve had to choose a CD player like this, for me or for a present, the first thing I look at is the battery time. This is what first led me to this player, it advertises 30+ hours of CD playback and 48 hours of mp3 playback (these are for non-stop playback, with no skipping. Using the skip a lot will reduce battery time and giving it resting time between playbacks increases battery time.) Those numbers seemed pretty amazing to me from just 2AA batteries. So I bought it....
The round shape looks great and I can?t see how a CD player could get much smaller. It feels very well built, and it takes very big bumps (unusually big) to get it to skip. The remote control is useful for whenever you are carrying it around in your pocket or a bag and don?t want to have to reach into your pocket and fumble around for the buttons...

mp3 cd player
Advantages: good battery life
Disadvantages: ?????
...a very short time and these days you would be hard pushed to find a piece of audio software that isn?t capable of converting your cd collection into mp3 files, much of it for free.
Even better, you are no longer limited to listening to your MP3 collection on your PC. Some hi-fi and mini systems are able to play mp3s but when it comes to personal audio players it seems that every passing day brings a few more tempting gadgets on to the market.
The trouble is that most of these mp3 players are still fairly new and usually quite pricey. I?ve been looking to spend about £60 and for that sort of price you can choose from quite a large selection of what are called solid state players.
Unlike walkmans they have no internally moving parts, so rather than physically place your music inside (as you would with a cd or tape) you simply attach...

Technika MP-308 4GB MP3 player with FM tuner
Advantages: Wide range of features
Disadvantages: Difficult to navagate menus
...The MP-308 is Tesco?s current top of the range mini MP3 player with FM radio, and at 3p shy of £30 places it firmly in the budget end of the market.
Having very recently ?goosed? my previous player doing a firmware upgrade, I got mine as an impulse purchase.
It?s small ? about the same size as a lighter, and has a rechargeable battery, so running costs are minimal.
You get everything you need; the player, a USB lead, a pair of cheap headphones, and a set of paper instructions and a mini-CD.
In fact if you?ve previously owned an MP3 player, you can probably dispense with the last two items, the player supports traditional ?drag?n?drop? from your ?my music? folder.
The instructions suggest that it?s far better to use the application which comes with the machine, that way you can make playlists, catalogue your albums and so...

How the hell do I play an MP3 CD ...
Advantages: Range of features, reads CD-RW audio CDs, anti-shock, built-in battery charger
Disadvantages: Tricky to set up an MP3 CD to work with it, no backlight to the display, unresponsive buttons
...to use it while driving is the quality of the buttons. They are very hard to push down, feel cheap and are somewhat unresponsive. Ideally, this unit could have done with an inline remote control.
One of the more impressive features is the anti-shock. Okay, all portable CD players come with anti-shock as standard but this one doesn't skimp on it with a 45 seconds ASP for CD mode and 120 seconds for MP3!
The volume is pretty reasonable. Most people would find it perfectly loud ... I have poor hearing but it's fine for me at full volume.
Now we come to the biggest problem of this unit. It is EXTREMELY fussy when it comes to reading and playing MP3 CDs. Whether this is a continuing problem with Windows XP, I'm not sure. Microsoft have released a patch for XP to fix known issues about getting MP3 CDs to work with units like the 372...

Sonys newest MP3/CD player is up against my test
Advantages: Sleek, slender, small weight and a stylish design
Disadvantages: Quite low battery life
...When the Walkman was first released the whole world dropped thier jaws and let out a amazed oooing sound... it is even said the the advertising copyrighter that made up the slogan "Don't run, walk man" was able to retire on that sentence alone. But in the technological age we live this product won't be able to turn many heads.
The sony D-NE511/S comes with power compression software which allows you to put up to 30 CD's onto one CD and play it through your D-NE511/S. The missing word in that sentence is ONLY...these compressed CD's can only be played through sony walkmans with ATRAC recording technology which makes it hard if you want to share your newly created mixes with friends. The same software also lets you make CD's containing loads of mp3 files (not sure on a certain number as i have never had enough mp3 files to push...

Tecknika mp3 player
Advantages: No batteries needed
Disadvantages: None
...When my son asked for an MP3 player so that he could take it to school for art, my first thought was no way because they are to expensive for someone to pinch.
We were in Tesco and noticed this product for only £15, so I took a closer look.
It is a small mp3 player which is good, because you can hide it well, especially when outside, it comes with 4 different face covers and does not take batteries, so yes I bought it, on the understanding that we will see how he takes care of this one and then we will by him a better if he does take care of it.
Well we have no need to buy another one because this little mp3 is brilliant.
To start with the batteries, as I have mentioned it doesn't take batteries, well it has an lithium battery inside which once charged lasts up to 8 hours, to charge it you plug the lead into the mp3 and then...

An Atrac-tive player
Advantages: Ultimate in portability, use in car or on foot
Disadvantages: Atrac cannot be used on any other players
...Once upon a time I had a car, and it had a radio that didn't work and a cassette player that did. So I used to tape my CD's onto cassettes to listen to in the car. This wasn't ideal, after all a tape only plays for a relatively short time before it needs turning over, but that was all I had.
Then I saw an advert in the paper for the Sony D-NE518CK , a CD/mp3 player which came with a car kit that simply went into the cassette slot and you could get upto 30 hours of music one disc. My mouth dropped and I said ?WOW, I've got to get one of them!!!?.
So off I toddled to Argos and bought the CD Walkman for a princely £90, then as a nice bonus received a free 240 disc case and 5 CD-A (writeable CDs that can only be used like regular audio CDs).
