Wildlife on Mull

Advantages: Fascinating insight into one of the wildest parts of the British Isles
Disadvantages: Too short

...My family have always had an interest in the Western Isles of Scotland; as a child, I spent all of my holidays on islands such as the Uists, Eigg, Coll, Tiree, Islay and Jura. I never got the chance to go to Mull - at the time, it was not particularly popular as a tourist destination and the birds that attracted my dad to the islands could be found elsewhere. Over 20 years later, Mull has a thriving tourist industry, both because of its wildlife and because of a children's programme called Balamory - those coloured houses actually exist in Mull's main town, Tobermory. I still haven't had the chance to go myself, although I hope to later this year and when my dad was given this DVD for Christmas, I knew I'd enjoy it. Drinking mulled wine on the Royal Yacht

Advantages: History, fascinating information, interesting
Disadvantages: A lot of walking but that's not really a problem!

...down a beautiful sweeping staircase, but although we could see this, it was roped off from visitors! Over these last two decks there were the Officers Quarters with their Dining Room, where they all dined each evening in full uniform, the Officers Mess and their sleeping quarters but I can't remember which ones were on which deck! We did go to visit on the right weekend though. Not only was the yacht decorated ready for Christmas there was free mulled wine and shortbread served in the Mess Room and it was lovely! Just down the corridor from the Mess Room was the little Naafi Shop selling fudge made on board together with other sweets and drinks. Just about the perfect getaway...

Advantages: Remote, tranquil and lots of things to do
Disadvantages: Hard to get to

...to scientists, a 20 minute walk could be the equivalent of a six week psychotherapy course. It does a lot for your happiness. And Mull is a good destination for a bit of walking, although I can think of more accessible places to go for a walk, but I think the main attraction for Mull is the historical and religious island of Iona, which is a major centre of pilgramage. Certainly that's the first place we went to when we first arrived on Mull. The other attraction of Mull, as I've said, is the feeling of waking up the next morning knowing that you are in the middle of an island in the Irish Sea without the constraints of modern day life and with the opportunities to go and explore this new and exciting wilderness over the next few days. My childhood holiday destination

Advantages: Peaceful, relatively remote, great scenery, plenty to see and do.
Disadvantages: Weather can be iffy (as with most of Britain), infamous Scottish midges.

So I should know the place pretty well. Where is the Island. The Island of Mull forms part of the Hebridean Island chain off the western coast of Scotland. The island itself is probably approximately the third largest behind the Islands of Lewis and Skye. Mull is a largely unspoilt island with a coastline of over 300 miles and a population of just under 3000. The island is approximately fifty miles from the north to south and is like most Hebridean islands in one respect, it is sparsely populated. Killing Me Slowly With His Song

...So to continue with the trend of bringing newish or relatively unknown Bands to the attention of all you lovely Ciao members my next band are The Mull Historical Society. I'll be honest I hadn't really heard of them myself this time last year but on a trip to Tesco's I picked up a copy of this album thinking it was in fact an album by someone else. Luckily it wasn't as having heard the Cosmic Rough Riders album since I was greatly disappointed and was less so with this. See even I get the bands I listen to mixed up every now and again. But who are they I hear you ask well the Mull Historical Society (MHS from here) are really just one man. That man is Colin MacIntyre who pretty much does everything within the band. From writing the lyrics to designing the albums cover he does everything himself. Of course with a band name like that...

...Ever stayed in an airport hotel? If you liked it - this is the place for you. If you hated it - this is the place for you. Well for a start you will have to forgive me if I\'m a bit remiss in the details about this place. My wife, my er....child thing who was barely a toddler when we stayed, and I were fortunate enough to give this place a go about 3 years ago. Mulled me time

Advantages: Warming, very festive and spicy smell that lingers nicely, soft skin

It’s mainly a cloves smell, but with just enough of the other aromas to really lift it. Wait – here’s the ingredients. Urm, anybody good with Latin? Okay, the ones I can decipher (i.e., are written in English, too!) include clove powder, lemon peel powder, and rose absolute. Rose? Didn’t guess that one. And surprisingly – no cinnamon! Must have been psychological. It’s also a very strong scent from this bath ballistic, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Beauty of the Isle of Mull

Advantages: beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: wet and windy

...This tiny island can be reached by ferries from Oban and Lochaline and from Kilchoan (in the summer only). The island is just 24 miles long and 26 miles wide. It's Western shoreline has lots of inlets and sea-lochs which gives it over 300 miles of coast. There are some really magnificent seaviews and towering, awesome looking cliffs, especially in the south-west of the island. Inland, the moors are covered in wildflowers and they rise to a height of more than 3100 feet at Ben More which is the island's highest point. There is just one town called Tobermory which is at the northern end of the Sound of Mull. It has a quaint and attractive waterfront and a yachting harbour. Mulled Wine and a Mince Pie anyone

...Well it is that time of year once again, and I had my little xmas party at my house on Friday night. Incidentally I havent been able to look at an alcoholic drink since then. For those of you who havent tried making your own mulled wine yet, take a look at my recipe, it was really straightforward. You will need: One bottle of red wine, doesnt have to be too expensive Half Pint of Orange Juice (I think that is 250ml!)
