Advantages: Re live a glorious European semi-final from the 80's
Disadvantages: It makes you sad we aren't this good anymore!

The Munich massacre - its aftermath, as noted by Spielberg

Advantages: Incredibly powerful drama in places
Disadvantages: Takes too long to get anywhere

...Munich is a poignant and dramatic, slow-moving Spielberg film that has at its core the effects and fallout from the 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre. Members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by a group known as Black September, reported to have ties to a militant group linked to the Fatah organisation. The film opens with some graphic scenes showing the massacre within the first five or ten minutes, before Spielberg introduces us to the squad of assassins who then plan to hunt down 11 Black September members and kill them as revenge. It is a very suspenseful and dramatic film, with patience needed throughout. Do not expect a fast paced tense thriller, because that's not what this is about. It's a serious drama, with the suspense the main focal point, and the emotions that the squad must go...

Munich - What Happened Next.....

Advantages: Thought Provoking
Disadvantages: Very long

...does seem to be possible. I'm not sure of Steven Spielberg's motivation for making this film but there are obvious parallels with the morality of the war on terror today as shown by the doubts of the team. The link is no more obvious than in the closing credits when a skyline shot of New York is shown with the WTC towers digitally placed back into the shot to remind us that terrorism is not dead and neither is the fight against it. DVD EXTRAS This DVD is somewhat disappointing when it comes to extras. There are only two and these are an introduction by director Steven Spielberg and then a min-documentary called, 'Munich, the Team, the Mission'. Some critics couldn?t resist having a pop at the great director, saying his film was factually incorrect and it was not made clear in it that some of the people killed by the Israel hit squad the true story centers around were only vaguely connected to the Munich Olympic disaster. Munich - A Beautiful Bavarian

Advantages: Beautiful City, Great Food, Wonderful Museums, Close to Alps

For many who've never visited this charming city (and perhaps, even for a few who have…) this, along with the even better-known Oktoberfest, an event which, to all intents and purposes, is little more than the Hofbräuhaus writ large, condensed into a month & transferred on to a circus ground, is pretty much all that Munich amounts to. Well, it isn't. MY MUNICH: I lived in Munich for about four years, in the late-seventies and early eighties. My earliest memories of the Hofbräuhaus involve sitting outside it in a parked Mercedes with my two brothers, when I was about six. Conflict and Blood Shed

Advantages: good acting, good plot
Disadvantages: bit too bloody at times

...A few years back I remember hearing of this film because there was a lot of hype about it around the time of the Oscars. It never did win an Oscar but it won a few other awards so it did well. I wasn't exactly sure what this film was about but judging from what I had seen it looked like a bit of an action film. I also noticed Eric Bana was in this film and think he's an ok actor so I decided to give this film a chance and rented out the DVD. It is based on true events as it says at the start about the 1972 Olympics where the 11 athletes were murdered at Munich. The government decides to set up an operation to kill the terrorist group involved in the Munich murders. So the team of five are led by Anver (Eric Bana) a family man who has a wife who is pregnant who he has to leave for a while to successfully complete this mission. Anver...

Probably the best and also worst hostel in Munich

Advantages: No kerfew, breakfasts, cheap bar, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Its not very clean

...a general idea. When you get to the front of the que a feast greats you, aswell as the general cereal and toast options there are also a variety of cold meats, cheeses, and breads, aswell as eggs, and pate. Accompanying this is good coffee or tea and two types of juice. After a night of German excess this is the perfect antidote. The resturant doubles as a bar in the evening with a small beer garden. The bar staff are friendly and obviously speak very good English, and they offer their own draught beer aswell as Dunkels from a bottle. It is alot cheaper than you will find anywhere else in Munich, especially if you can hold on to the rather flimsy wristband that is handed to you when you check in. This will allow you happy hour drinking and means you can get a full stein for about 4.50 euros, compared to the average of 7 euros in the rest...

Munich Walk Tour

Advantages: one of the must-see cities in Germany

...Last summer I was in Munich to see an art exhibition. I didn´t have any plans for the afternoon and when I saw a leaflet ´Munich Walk Tours in English´, (from May 17th to August 31st daily 10:45 am and 3:00 pm, from Sept. 1st to Oct. 31st daily 10:45, meeting point in front of the town hall entrance under the Glockenspiel on Marienplatz, 9 Euro, under 26 years 8 Euro, children under 14 with an adult free), I thought, why not? Why not find out what foreigners tell foreigners about Munich? Still on the Marienplatz the guide, a young woman from Australia started with a survey over the history of Munich from the year it was officially founded up to today and covered 800 years in about 10 minutes. Our tour wasn´t specified as a historical tour, it was just a general introduction, but we heard more about the reign of the Royal Family...
