Munich Walk Tour

Advantages: one of the must-see cities in Germany
Disadvantages: none really

...of Wittelsbach which ended in 1918 than about the Munich of today. We heard that Munich was bombarded and destroyed so badly during WW2, 70% of the city lay in ruins, that it was considered to leave it like that and built a completely new city in the countryside, that was certainly interesting news, but then we learnt that after the war when the Americans helped the West Germans with the Marshall plan the Germans ´suddenly´ became diligent and busy and built up the country in no time. Ha! Germans have always been diligent and busy, only recently, during the last decade, some people have started discovering that corruption is an easier way to success and only recently Germany has fallen back economically from being the ´European Locomotive´ to one of the last wagons of the train. This is no secret information, but can be found in every newspaper...

An Englishman living in Munich....

Advantages: Safety, Size, Greenery, Location
Disadvantages: Language, Entertainment possibilities

...with culture and history. Far too much for me to go into detail here, but a few in-teresting places to see include: Nympenburgschloß (Nympenburg Castle) - Beautiful summer palace with lovely gardens, which are free to walk around. Königsplatz (King's place) - partly rebuilt after the war, an architectural dream. Deutsches Museum (German museum) - Massive and highly interesting. Not like your normal boring museum! Olypiaturm (Olympic Tower) - the highest platform from which to see the entire city. Contracts If you are planning to stay in Munich for any length of time and want to buy a mobile phone (Handy) or you fancy a work out in the gym, be careful! The contracts that you sign have to be cancelled in writing, otherwise they will renew themselves (as is the norm in most of Germany). Mobile phone contracts have a minimum contract...

Business Trip Accommodation in Munich

Disadvantages: Gets booked up early during Oktoberfest & trade-fairs

...After many, many visits I recommend the Holiday Inn, Munich South, as the ideal stopover for the business traveller The rooms are comfortable and practical (TV, telephone, bath, shower, minbar, tea/coffee making facilities) but you get that extra bit of something there that's worth the return visits: 1. The cleanliness is second to none, you feel like you are the first person to have every been inside your room. 2. The baths.... oh my, I have never encountered such a deep bath in my life. Just what you need after a hard day. 3. The Staff - they all speak English, are polite and genuinely seem to enjoy and have pride in what they do. Nothing is too much trouble. 4. Room-service. Snacks, meals and drinks served up until 11:30pm. Delicious. You don't have to stick to the menu either, they will try and cook up anything...

LIVING IN MUNICH

...Hallo all of you! Today I want to tell you something about Munich, the biggest town in bavaria (germany). As you can tell from my horrible english, I'm a german girl. Since 3 years I go to munich at the weekends because my boyfriend lives here. Now, I'm actually living in this big town since one year and I want to tell you some facts about this town: + WORKING IN MUNICH + To get a job in munich is not very easy! A lot of people have no job and are hanging around in parks every day. In munich we have especially BMW and SIEMENS, to very big employers. When I'm talking to friends who don't live in Munich and I tell them what I (or friends) earn, they always look like "What? Now you're rich!". But that's not right because living in Munich is very, very expensive... + LIVING IN MUNICH + Very expensive, like I said...

Must see in Germany

Advantages: Friendly, cosmopolitan, easy to get to
Disadvantages: Not cheap

...Munich is a great place to spend a few days or weeks. Apart from the world's biggest beerfestival which takes place every September it has a number of other attractions. Many museums (Europe's largest scientific Museum, Deutsche Museum, one of the finest art collections Alte Pinakothek), great parks (Englischer Garten), great shops and so much more. It is big enough to never get bored but small enough to get to most attractions within 1/2 hour with the excellent public transport. Within 30 mins you can go even go to the Alps. The people on the whole are very friendly and most speak English....

The Munich massacre - its aftermath, as noted by Spielberg

Advantages: Incredibly powerful drama in places
Disadvantages: Takes too long to get anywhere

...Munich is a poignant and dramatic, slow-moving Spielberg film that has at its core the effects and fallout from the 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre. Members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by a group known as Black September, reported to have ties to a militant group linked to the Fatah organisation. The film opens with some graphic scenes showing the massacre within the first five or ten minutes, before Spielberg introduces us to the squad of assassins who then plan to hunt down 11 Black September members and kill them as revenge. It is a very suspenseful and dramatic film, with patience needed throughout. Do not expect a fast paced tense thriller, because that's not what this is about. It's a serious drama, with the suspense the main focal point, and the emotions that the squad must go...

...Early in the morning of the 5th September 1972, Palestinian terrorists broke into the athlete's village at the Munich Olympics. The terrorist group known as Black September stormed the Israeli apartments, took 9 hostages, and shot two men dead. Whilst the games went on around them, the terrorists demanded the release of hundreds of prisoners from Israeli jails as well as the release of two Germans being held in Germany. Israel refused to bend to the demands and later that night the remaining hostages were all killed in a bungled rescue bid held at Munich airport. This event happened many years before I was born, but the shock of it has meant that it has never been forgotten.
