YOU'RE TERRIBLE, MURIEL!

Advantages: Funny, feel-good film, with a good storyline and fun soundtrack
Disadvantages: The story - and heroine - are somewhat lacking in morals!

...Twenty-two year-old Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) lives in the Australian town of Porpoise Spit with her family. Muriel has no job, and is something of a misfit: overweight, out of fashion and fixated with the music of Abba, which she uses to escape from her boring life. She dreams of being ?something? and feels that the way for her to do this is to meet a suitable man and get married. Her father Bill (Bill Hunter) is a local councillor and constantly criticises not only Muriel but her mother, brother and sisters, branding all of them useless and blaming them for the fact that he lost out on becoming state governor (rumour had it that the reason why he missed out was because his family was not up to scratch). Muriel thinks that she has some friends: a group of local ?it girls?, obsessed by fashion, beauty and finding good looking...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

A little bit of Parisian elegance

Advantages: Enjoyable, leisurely and well written
Disadvantages: A sudden ending

...I picked up this book in Waterstones a couple of months ago. I had chosen two other books in their 3 for 2 section, and was browsing for another one when this title caught my eye. Of course I had to pick it up and read the blurb on the back, and luckily, in addition to the fantastic title, it sounded like an interesting read. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery tells the story of Renee, a concierge in a fancy Parisian apartment block, and Paloma, a 12 year old girl who lives in that apartment block. On the surface, Renee appears to be a typical concierge, who is simple, uncultured and eats bland and funny smelling food. However, she is very intelligent, much more so than most of the inhabitants, but hides it as a concierge should not be cleverer than her rich employers. Paloma is also incredibly intelligent, but, in order...

Or is it MA-riel

Advantages: Very funny at times
Disadvantages: Hmmmm - Can't think of any

...Given the less than glittering offerings from the Australian film industry you'd be forgiven for assuming that this film would be yet another disaster that would be a total waste of time...but you'd be wrong. Ugly duckling Muriel dreams of being a success and, more importantly, getting married. From the start of the story though it's obvious that the odds are stacked against her: arrested at her friends wedding, saddled with the most obnoxious, lazy family in the world, and not exactly blessed in the looks department. But by a bizarre twist of fate she ends up on holiday (after being given a cheque book full of blank cheques by her insane mum) and pals up with her old school pal Rhonda. Once they've put Muriel's snobby 'friends' down it's off to Sydney to start their new lives looking for men and breaking away from the pressures...

ABsolutely BeAutiful

Advantages: Moving, Hilarious, Believable, excellent cast
Disadvantages: If you despise ABBA, this film may not be a good idea

...I don't know whether its the almost iconic(or should that be ironic) ABBA soundtrack, the superbly diologue driven plot, the comic semi tragic characters or whether its just Muriel's sister, and her 'You're terrible Mariel' sneer that makes this film so enjoyable, but I have some small inkling that it might be all of them. Aside from the Lion King(and give me a break, I was 10 then!), I haven't seen a film that made me laugh so much, or cry. The tale, as the title suggets, is about Muriel, a girl with all of her prioties wrong. She's not the prettiest face you'd see, but rather plan, with a tendancy for behaving like a Klingon in a rather literal sense. Her school 'friends' are all beautiful, whimsical bimbos who frankly tell her they don't want to know her. That she should find her own friends, but she does exactly the opposite...

let her finsh her orgasm

Advantages: Very funy
Disadvantages: none

...Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) lives with her family in Porpoise Spit, a small town in Australia. She is a bit of a social misfit, trying desperately to be in with the "in crowd" (four stuck up b**ches - probability ex high school cheerleaders - very popular with the boys), she's unemployed, into Abba (the band) and is obsessed by being a bride. People see Muriel as a "loser". Her father is "Councillor Bill Heslop" (Bill Hunter), a respected member of the community, her mother is "loosing her marbles" (cuckoo) and her brothers and sisters are useless layabouts. We are first introduced to Muriel at the wedding of the most popular girl in town. She catches the bouquet, sees one of the bridesmaids in the laundry with groom (and they aren’t just having a bit of a natter) and is arrested for wearing a stolen dress. It looks...
