Pause For A Muse

Advantages: Some great tracks,
Disadvantages: Not a huge progression

...When Muse came onto the scene with their debut album they were dismissed by some as a Radiohead clone. Yes there was a vocalist with a big vocal range, the songs were a bit off kilter and not in the norm, and there were some weird sounds. So what? With their second album Origin of Symmetry Muse proved that they rock harder than Radiohead. Now we have Absolution, the third studio album and after a 9/10 score from the NME it?s safe to say that Muse are on the up once again. I?ve been listening to the album for a few weeks now and bought it yesterday. It?s already growing on me and fans of their previous records won?t be disappointed. The album opens with an intro of marching before erupting into the striking piano riff of ?Apocalypse Please?. The song moves through epic strides of sound from all angles as well as having a harmonious...

Muse - The Resistance

Advantages: Varied, Different, Special
Disadvantages: Not consistant

...It?s been a long time coming. 3 years since Black Holes and Revelations Muse have returned with The Resistance and with a weight of expectation that would crush lesser bands the Devon dwelling trio have found new strength, a new sound and new ways to rock your socks. From the outset with first single Uprising, the tone is set. The lyrics are heaving with paranoia and the crowd-pleasing, pounding beats set us up for a wild ride. Resistance tugs the heartstrings with Matt Bellamy declaring ?Love is our Resistance? to the frantic drums of Dom Howard. As if it wasn?t clear enough from the opening track, Muse are back. Undisclosed Desires is the first sign of experimentation. The band sounds comfortable in the clearly unfamiliar territory of a song described cheekily as the ?anti muse song?. It?s not as good as the previous two songs and is...

Muse-d Up - The Resistance

Advantages: Brilliant, The Exo-Genesis Tracks, DVD - Making of The Resistance, Orgasmic, Mysterious
Disadvantages: Few Tracks are not upto standard to what i thought

...I was wondering when the new album is going to come out. This album did not disappoint me at all. The title might have been fortunate to be called ?The Resistance? since I really could not resist buying this straight away. The first thing that I liked about is the cover art; a man in front of a multi-coloured circular ball/globe(?). It definitely does bring out the whole album. Also, if you look at it long enough, you will see that the image is going in towards the Earth but as a whole, it just looks like a globe. 01. Uprising This track is one of my favourite in the album. It is quite alienating at some point and very upbeat. This track, I think sets the new album as a totally new different style to Muse?s other album. 02. Resistance This track is my favourite in the album. It has got a mixture of instruments used. I really like...

MUSE HYSTERIA

Advantages: Big move up in quality from the second album
Disadvantages: unecessary 'intro' and 'interlude' tracks

...This is the third album from brit-rockers Muse.Always a formidable live band, the first album was patchy whilst 'Origin of symmetry' tailed off poorly at the end. This marks their first fully realised album. Matt Bellamy's reigned in the vocal acrobatics a bit and the songs, whilst musically complex at times, have some fine pop choruses. The openning 'intro' is just the sound of the band stampign their feet which isn't really necessary, and the same can be said about the later 'interlude'. 'Apocalypse Please' follows and is a monstorous slice of music, with pounding drums and futuristic sound effects. 'Time is running out' is similarly bombastic, with a chorus built for singing along and some very cool sounding finger clicking. 'Sing for absolution' is the first ballad and has some particuarly nice guitar touches. It's tender yet...

Muse - Origin Of Symmetry

Advantages: Brilliant, energetic music
Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!?

...After recently watching one of the best live performances I've ever seen at Reading Festival this bank holiday weekend, I felt it completely necessary to review what is, in my opinion, Muse's best album to date; Origin Of Symmetry. After the general success of their debut Showbiz, this second album raised them into the high-society of headlining rock music acts. After this weekend's show, it's easy to see why Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are thought of so highly. Opener New Born, is simply breath-taking. The piano introduction builds the song up perfectly, with Bellamy's eerie vocals - Thom Yorke-esque at times - acting as a perfect compliment. Then it all happens. The piano's die down and it comes the electric guitars, with a riff full of energy, rhythm and excitment. From then on the verses keep the tempo...

Keeping Their Muse

Advantages: Cryptic lyrics, good guitars, good singing
Disadvantages: No killer track as such, tracks a bit too similar

...It's hard to imagine, 12 years on, just what kind of state music was in when Muse where formed. Oasis were just breaking through, as were Radiohead; Green Day were beginning to get recognition, Smashing Pumpkins were reaching their creative peak, R.E.M. were one of the worlds biggest bands and the type of music that would later be labelled 'Britpop' was about to take centre stage with Blur, Oasis, The Spice Girls and Suede. It could be argued that it was the wrong time to form a band based on roughly the same principles as many of the alternative bands of the previous five years. Muse were formed under the name Muse in 1994 by singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy, percussionist/drummer Dom Howard and bassist Chris Wolstenholme. Since 1994, Muse have retained the cryptic, alternative rock sound alive through 4 rather stunning albums: Showbiz...

What A Muse!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Albert Brooks is a down on his luck film writerwho enlists the help of Sharon Stone whom he believes is a Greek muse. She gives him inspiration but he has to provide for her expensive and strange tastes and requirements. As the film develops people whom she used to help come and ask for help from her. Broks isn't very happy about this as he believes this will weaken her musing ablities. The film is a ll about her effect on this family. It is a funny, comic filmfor a little light relief....

Falling away with Muse

Advantages: Every genre of rock in one CD
Disadvantages: The neighbours will hate you when Hysteria is turned up to 10!

...Some fans may have been disappointed with 'Absolution' because it had taken a rather sharp turn away from the direction that they were heading towards. Instead of the thrumming guitar riffs of 'plug in baby' and the dream like quality of 'Bliss', Muse offered a less brash and 'head rush' experience of that in 'showbiz' and 'Origin of Symmetry'. However I think this album with its epic quality is a pure masterpiece. It shows how much the band had grown and become even more sophisticated (if it's possible) than before. Tracks such as 'Stockholm syndrome', 'Hysteria' (my personal favourite), 'butterflies and hurricanes' and `TSP` still have the old Muse sound quality to them to reassure us fans that they are who they say they are. The touch difference to their sound comes from the quirky 'Time is running out' with its amazingly catchy beat...

Muse's hidden gems

Advantages: ....will make your mind delve into the impossible
Disadvantages: none its unexplainably amazing!...yes thats probably not a word....

...Within the last year Muse have become one of the most talked about bands, each album they release they recieve a new breed and mass following of fans around the planet. This album is usually overlooked by many the new fan - and if you are one of them i suggest you dont! Strictly speaking it is a collection of "bsides and live tracks", dont let the name tag fool you, the hidden gems of muse's backcatalogue are found on this very cd! It is the soundtrack to the Hullabaloo tour - "origins of symmetry period", and i highly recommend the dvd that can be purchased as well......... This cd proves how unique muse are, how edgy even with the most mournful sounding acoustic songs "hyper chondriac music" ( acoustic version of hyper music), which is to this day my favourite muse song. Side A contains the bsides and hidden gems, if you...

Which Muse?.......Euterpe (of course!)

Advantages: Blinding 4th album with an uneasy lyrical twist
Disadvantages: Topping it next time round.

...by Rich Costey ~ ~ The Ramblings ~ Often described as a small sleepy harbour town in South Devon, Teignmouth (pronounced 'Tinmouth') can hardly be held on high as a nest bed for groundbreaking progressive music with a political undertow of tsunami proportions, but somehow, where Muse is concerned, this is the case. Although non of the trio that make up Muse can claim to be born and bred in Teignmouth, its influence, or more precisely, its lack of influence in relation to 'things to get into as a typical teenager' led to the formative years being characterised by, as Bellamy stated in a recent interview, "hanging around, smoking and listening to music as there wasn't anything else to do." It appears that out of the towns' laissez faire approach to its youth, musical creativity through being in a band, as a route to both...
