Berlin! Berlin!

Advantages: Germany's capital and most interesting city
Disadvantages: a bit too large, distances too long

...Berlin*, Berlin, Wir fahren nach Berlin! (Berlin, Berlin, We're heading for Berlin!) (pronounced Ber-leen, stress on the second syllable) This slogan has been chanted enthusiastically for ages whenever a German sports team made it to the capital for the last round, meanwhile it has left the confines of sports and is now even used by the Berlin Tourist Board for a campaign to attract visitors. I've been to four Berlins in my life: when in my mother's womb I was in Berlin, then the capital of the Third Reich, from the GDR (German Democratic Republic), where we later lived, I visited Berlin once in the 1950s, a much smaller city then (only the Soviet sector), but still a capital, the capital of the GDR. After fleeing to West Germany I visited West Berlin, not a capital any more, but no ordinary city, either, it had become...

Brilliant Berlin

Advantages: A wonderful city
Disadvantages: None

...wanted to see before we even got to Berlin. The Sony Centre is located in Potsdamer Platz (the new centre of Berlin) and it houses apartments, offices, trade and catering businesses and a cinema with a film museum. We walked round and took some photos but we didn't really know what was there so we didn't go inside any of the buildings. We intended to go back and have another look round but we never really got the chance. We went for a walk not really knowing where we were going but it wasn't long before we came across Brandenburger Tor (The Brandenburg Gate). The Brandenburger Tor is a former city gate and the symbol of Berlin. It was built between 1788 and 1791. In 1961, the gate was closed when the Berlin Wall was built. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the gate symbolised freedom and the unity of the city. It re-opened on 22 December...

BERLIN BERLIN BERLIN

Advantages: all
Disadvantages: ---

.... In 1902 the first high and underground go from the Warsaw bridge to the zoo, the first municipal busses run as of 1905. In 1912 the famous bust comes the Nefertiti into the Egyptian museum. The first World War then starts, though. After that, for some years, there are further disturbances in Berlin which a little calms down 1919 only after the choice Eberts to the first empire president of the Weimar republic again. Culture, economy and society return to Berlin. After the first radio and television exhibition 1924 the world economic crisis follows with 600,000 unemployed in Berlin five years later. And Hitler seizes the power on January 30th, 1933. It the German Reichstag fire, the boycott of Jewish business and a burning of books follow open opera Square-and this all already in the time period by the end of May . to guest pictures...

Night at the Museum

Advantages: Great comedy and pure entertainment
Disadvantages: a little slow to begin.. but not for long though.

...Director: Shawn Levy Producers: Shawn Levy and Stephen Sommers. Writer: Milan Trenc, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. Stars: Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Jake Cherry, Charlie MurphyRami Malek, Pierfrancesco Favino,Ricky Gervais, Patrick Gallagher, Robin Williams and Kim Raver Released in Late 2006 this comedy, (I believe is based on a 1993 novel by Milan Trenc), revolved around a Museum and its mystical effects on a night watchman. **BRIEF PLOT** In New York city's Museum of Natural History Lawrence 'Larry' Daley, (played by Ben Stiller) begins a job as a night watchman, mainly to gain the respect of his son Nick, (played by Jake Cherry). Larry has had many dead end jobs in the passed, failing at all he tries, and is so terrified that Nick will prefer spending time with his...

The Booth Museum, Brighton

Advantages: Free admission, lots to see
Disadvantages: None for me

...The Booth Museum is located on Brighton's suburban back streets well away from the town centre but having said that it is on Dyke Road (the A2010) which is one of the major routes through the town and so it is relatively easy to find. The museum is named after the Victorian natural historian Edward Thomas Booth who spent much of his life in Brighton. Primarily it houses his personal collection of stuffed birds but there are also animals, insects, fossils and skeletons. These collections were amassed during his lifetime and contain over half a million different specimens. He lived between 1840 and 1890. Like most Victorian naturalists of the time he was an avid collector. It seems odd nowadays to think that someone that was considered to be such a lover of these creatures should hunt them down and shoot them. However we need to...

Great 5* Berlin Hotel

Advantages: Great value for 5* hotel, very modern, clean
Disadvantages: Air-con was broken down..

...Just came back from our long weekend (2nd May Bank Holiday, 26May-28May) with 4 other friends. We went to Berlin with Easyjet; it was about £120 per person (a little pricey due to peak period) and the flight time is a little inconvenience because it departed at 6.30am, and check-in time is from 4.30am so we took the last train from London Bridge to Luton airport (about 1hour). We got there by 1.30am and slept on the benches for few hours. There are three airports in Berlin, which are Schoenefled, Tegel and Tempelhof. We went to Berlin Schoenefled with Easyjet and this is the furthest airport from town centre and to the hotel (Grand Hotel Esplanade), it took us about 1 hour. The closest airport is Berlin Tempelhof it would be about 20 minutes from town and 30minutes from Berlin Tegel Airport to town. Grand Hotel Esplanade is a 5...

Radisson SAS Hotel Berlin. An oasis of calm in a bustling city.

Advantages: Stylish hotel in a superb location. Unique feature of huge aquarium in hotel atrium.
Disadvantages: One bed rather than two pushed together would have been nice!

...streets. Situated on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse in the Mitte district of Berlin, this hotel is superbly situated for sightseeing. The River Spree runs to one side of the hotel and if you leave from the main door and turn right you are just a few metres away from a boarding point for sight-seeing boat trips. You will also be facing the Cathedral (Dom) with its baroque style dome and stunning architecture. Very close at hand is Museum Island and the National Gallery. Continue in this direction and you will be strolling down "Unter den Linden" . This will lead you to the Brandenburg gate - just about 15 - 20 minutes stroll from the hotel. If you were to turn left from the hotel entrance you would reach Alexanderplatz and the TV tower within minutes So what does the hotel offer inside? Well, I have to say that if you are hoping for a taste...

Review of Radisson SAS Hotel Berlin, Berlin

Ponterfact Museum, West Yorkshire

Advantages: Free entry, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Not everyones idea of a fun day out

...Pontefract's museum is located within an impressive art nouveau building that dates from 1904. This building was originally the Carnegie Free Library and even today it still has the feel of a library about it, although in other places it also reminded me of an old school building. It is located right in the heart of the town centre, adjacent to the parish church and close to the market and is therefore very easy to find. I usually try and make a point of visiting museums when I am in area as they are an excellent way of finding out about an area and they are usually free to visit. Pontefract's museum is no exception to this rule as it is both free and a great place to discover all about the towns rich history. The building that houses the museum is set out on two different floors but most of the exhibits are on the lower floor. As...

Kreuzberg Berlin for punks & general summary

Advantages: friendly people, great nightlife, great history/attractions, great transport system
Disadvantages: some may find Kreuzberg intimidating, Kottbusser crime rate is a deterrent

...This review of Berlin is based on my experience whilst on tour with my band. It focuses on the people in Berlin as well as the city. It is a general overview of my experience, not a restaurant or hotel review. BERLIN FOR PUNKS & BANDS My band have played in Berlin twice now and both times been received with open arms by old friends and strangers. We travelled to Berlin first of all in May 06 originally not knowing anyone or expecting anything. We knew we'd be meeting a friend of a contact from myspace but that was it. The venue 'Wild At Heart' in Kreuzberg it turned out was great with good music, good PA and sound staff and punters. The management there provided us weary touring few with free beer and a decent backstage area and a free meal, with a vegan option if requested. It is here we met our myspace friend's friend...

Air Berlin - Fantastic

Advantages: Great service
Disadvantages: They don't fly to more places

...Air Berlin Low cost Flight s to Germany and Beyond This summer was the first time I had flown and to say I was nervous about my first flight was an understatement, especially as I had heard terrible things about other low cost air lines. I had nothing to worry about. The staff were pleasant and efficient and with the added bonus of being able to check in online the night before there were no worries about where I would be sitting. The flight I took was from London Stanstead to BerlinTegel, a flight of about 1hour and 20 mins on a Focker 100. Booking I booked the flight with Air Berlin direct on there website www.airberlin.com which has since been improved since I booked my flight. You now use a map and click on the airport you wish to depart from and all the routes avaliable from that airport show up. Then choose the dates...
