MODERN ART in reality
Advantages: Great for viewing modern art.
Disadvantages: Some of the curates are a bit sandoffish and not nice to talk to.
...The Museum of Morden Art is great for a visit, but wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the wired as well as wonderful.
I visited this museum on a recent trip to New York and found the art works facinating. The ground floor houses the more main stream works by people like Monet, Picasso and the like As you pass though the five upper floors the art work becomes more detached and post-modern.
The museum houses permenant and touring pieces of art, from paintings to scupture, photographs to computer displays. It caters for all tastes in modern art. The artists are too numerous to mention as are the pieces. Needless to say art is everywhere to be seen.
The lower levels house the cinema, a theatre, self service cafe and small shop. The second floor houses a shop and a formal resturant. This is a roomy museum and caters well...

The Buxton Museum And Art Gallery
Advantages: Lots of history, free
Disadvantages: Closed in Winter, and Mondays during Summer
...Buxton is a beautiful little picturesque town situated right on the fringe of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. It is place that is both picturesque and historic and is well worth a visit.
Any visitor to the town wanting to know a little more about this old Roman Spa town should set an hour or so of their day aside and pay a visit to the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.
Admission to this building is completely free, something of a bit of a rarity these days. I visited here a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed.
The Building that houses this Museum has an interesting history of its own. It was built in 1880 and was originally the Peak Hydropathic Hotel.
This Hotel closed in the early 1900's and for a few years stood empty. During the First World War however it was used by the Red Cross as a Hospital and cared...

The Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery
Advantages: Free Entry, Lots to see, accesible by disabled
Disadvantages: Unattractive exterior of building
...The rather dull, unattractive facade of the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery disguises what a real gem of a place this really is inside. This is Doncaster\'s only town centre museum and here you will find a whole range of different artefacts that tell the story of the history of this town back to the Roman times and even further beyond.
The museum is on two different floors, both of which are fully accessible by disabled visitors, and there is a lift to the second floor. In front of the main entrance doors there is a large reception area, which has various leaflets and books relating to the local area. At this point you could be forgiven for thinking that you had walked into the local tourist information centre rather than a museum, but a quick glance around soon reveals several little anterooms, that lead off from this main foyer area...

modern art..ppttthhh.
Advantages: something to do on a bored Saturday
Disadvantages: not that entertaining
...Am I the only one these days that thinks Modern Art has gotten completely out of hand? Whereas I used to get thrills from the prospect of visiting various ?hipper? museums a few years ago, now I just shudder at the thought of being faced with unimaginative, and let?s just say it, perfectly ordinary things.
I was flipping through the Evening Standard?s Metro Life magazine tonight, and was almost appalled at what caught my attention in the Art section. There is one solitary picture of, no exaggeration, a ball of packing tape. Yup. That about sums it up. Sure, this ball was roughly the size of a small room, but with the piece entitled ?Boulder?, it hardly stirred up overwhelming appreciation.
Hephzibah Anderson of Metro Life wrote, ?The Jerwood Platform provides artists with a survey at pivotal moments in their career?Highlights here...

Bristol Museum: Much More Than Boring Old Plates
Advantages: Educational, fun and free.
Disadvantages: Long, long queues until the end of August 2009.
...or taxi if you arrive by train.
Bristol?s City Museum and Art Gallery (to give it its official title) is housed in an Edwardian building in the Baroque style in the Clifton district, a gift to the city from the tobacco baron, Sir William Henry Wills. It sits grandly between the university?s towering Wills Memorial Building and Browns restaurant, which occupies another impressive building; this one being in a combination of Bristol Byzantine and Venetian Gothic Revival styles (loosely based on the Doge?s Palace!) and which was itself once home to the museum. They make a stately trio.
The building dates back to 1905 and the arched entrance on Queen?s Road used to span a driveway that once allowed people to step straight from their carriages into the museum without being troubled by rain on wet days. Only a few years ago glass entrance...

Educational Dancing Festivals and Other Stories
Advantages: Great selection, presentation and location

Anyway, onto the MOMA. The MOMA is famous – so famous it got mentioned in 3 of the Babysitters Club Books, a Sweet Valley High special, several Paula Danziger ones and a number of others I’ve forgotten. Knowing I was off to the States that term, I arrived back at uni with every book I owned that mentioned the city in question, and believe me, there are a lot (even if most do have a target reading age or, erm, age 10). So now you know it’s famous, and I’m guessing you know what the initials stand for (Museum of Modern Art – see, you do now), so what else do you need to know?

Great For a Day Out - The Holburne Museum
Advantages: Lots of temporary exhibits, great family feel, park and tearooms
Disadvantages: Not much space in the temporary exhibit room.
.....
The Holburne Museum houses the art collection of Sir William Holburne who lived in Bath in the 19th Century. Holburne was well know for his collection which included works such as the unique Susini once owned by King Louis XIV and paintings by Gainsborough, who also was a resident in Bath for some time.
The museum is located at the end of Great Pultney Street and can be seen from afar. Once you get right up close to the museum it looks a little less stately and a little more homely. Sydney Gardens is located directly behind the main building.
Walking through the main entrance you come to the reception where you can buy your tickets. It's 4.50 for adults, free for students of Bath and Bath Spa University and concessions for the over 65s and children.
The guest exhibit is in a room off to the left. It's suprisingly small...

Bristol City Museum = Fantastic Family Fun
Advantages: WARNING- LONG REVIEW. Loads to see and do for adults and kids.
Disadvantages: WARNING LONG REVIEW. Poor disabled facilites and cafe.
...My other half has been on holiday this week, combine that with our 4th anniversary, Mothers day and an in-service day at my sons school it was the perfect opportunity for some good old family fun, among the day trips we took was a visit to Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery. It's a great attraction for us living in Bristol and with free entry it's perfect for our ever expanding family as it doesn't break the bank. Getting to the museum is simple enough for us, as we're local, but the parking is a real problem, being situated in the middle of busy Queens Road, at the top of Park Street, in Clifton, it is near impossible to find a space nearby and we always park in the Frogmore street NCP and walk the 5 minute trip up the road, past the university buildings and into the museum. Bristol City Museum & Art gallery is set in a beautiful baroque...

Art for all - The Tate Modern
Advantages: It's free, vast and diverse collection, spectacular building
Disadvantages: Cafe and restaurant prices are steep
.... The gallery is open Sunday to Thursday from 10am until 6pm and from 10am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and with the exception of two temporary exhibitions (which frequently change) the gallery is free! The Tate Modern has also ensured that the building is fully accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs and leaflets regarding access information can be found at all the Information Desks.
The mammoth space afforded by the former power station is bedecked with art from the 19th century right through to the present day. There is a lot to see, but it is important not to be put off by the sheer volume of works, and if you plan to see the entire collection I would recommend setting aside a whole day and splitting the trip into two parts. One of the most important pieces of advice I would give is to get to the gallery as early as possible. I...

Go Potty In The Potteries Museum !
Advantages: Good facilities, lots to see, free admission
Disadvantages: There's only one lift
...are interested in ancient things, then this is definitely worth a visit.
Arts
------
I'm not a lover of modern art, but I do like older works. The museum has a nice mixture of both. The gallery isn't that big, so don't expect a Staffordshire National Gallery ! Collections include 20th century British painting, local views, and international prints. There is work by Picasso and Degas to see, and there is also glass art and metalwork. There are temporary exhibitions to see, as well as the permanent ones.
My favourite piece was called "Lynmouth, South Devon" by John White Abbott. This watercolour brought back memories of our visit there a couple of years ago. My husband enjoyed looking at the local paintings as he obviously recognised the views and places they depicted.
There is also a changing fashions area to look at which...
