Review of Mustek DV 5000

Its no Mustek

Advantages: Cheap, low profile and easy to use
Disadvantages: Limited funtionality

...I got my Mustek 12000UB during 2000 and found it to be a great investment. It cost me less than 40 pounds brand new and is surprisingly good at what it does. It came packaged with a very slick, albeit limited, software suite that includes all the functions necessary to Fax, Photocopy, Scan images and text and an entry level version of Xerox's Textbridge. All in all I do very little scanning at home but needed to have one there for the odd urgent job. Since then I've used it regularly and encountered very few problems. The OCR software sometimes produces erratic results when the original source is not clear - but then I've used top of the range OCR software that does the smae thing. Top notch £60 scanner

Advantages: Compact, quick, cheap, portable, quick to install, can do high dpi if required, can be routed thru printer
Disadvantages: Short cables, poor distribution makes obtaining one hard, poorly packaged

We'd previously had an HP Scanner, which did nothing but crash the computer it was on and could not be moved about very easily. Now I don't know the ins and outs of scanners, but I know they're not all £60 and of good a quality as this one. Mustek are not very well known and don't have the distribution of the HP / Lexmark / Epsons of this world. I can say though that we have had no problems whatsoever with this scanner. Take your filthy paws off my scanner

Advantages: No extra power cable, light weight
Disadvantages: Slow, problems with Windows service pack 2

...For some reason I have never had much luck with scanners, I have had about 4 in my life time and each of the first 3 have died some nasty death, the worst being that the last one decided to start smoking before the glass cover shattered. Triumph Trophy 1200

Advantages: Great all round bike
Disadvantages: May be too large for shorter people

...I own the 2001 version of this bike. The 1200cc 4 cylinder motor sure does pack a punch. It can out perform most bikes on the road. It is a great tourer and commuter especially if the full luggage set is installed. This consists of 2 panniers and the optional top box. I have the triumph panniers but the top box i have is made by shad. The triumph top box is an optional extra and expensive new. It can be purchased on ebay though but you will need to be patient to locate the colour you are after. It is a large bike but is ideally suited to those longer in the leg. It fits me perfectly as im just over 6 foot. The comfort is variable but some people chose to fit an alternative seat such as a corbin or instal a sheepskin cover. The comfort for the passenger is alot better due to the width of the seat. I commute everyday on mine 20 miles...

...Mustek 600 CPs scanners are a very good buy. I bought mine for less than £30 and it was worth every penny. The scan quality is excellent and it is fast and easy to use. It scans photos and postcards very, very well but it tends to struggle with magazines and newspapers which reflects the quality of these publications. It takes typically two to three minutes to scan a photograph in 600 dpi. This quality setting gives crystal clear scans at the same size as the source but when a bigger bitmap is required it may need a higher quality setting which can cause crashes. You would be well advised to simply download the drivers from Mustek.com rather than use the software CD, as the scans work better and you can choose to use only Paint Shop Pro or similar for your image editing. This won't mean much to many of you, but it is, in fact, a colour scanner. I got the scanner when I bought my home PC several years ago. I do not use it that often, but it certainly comes in handy at times when I need a quick copy and it is inconvenient to go out and get a photocopy. Let me tell you a little more about it.
