Top notch £60 scanner

Advantages: Compact, quick, cheap, portable, quick to install, can do high dpi if required, can be routed thru printer
Disadvantages: Short cables, poor distribution makes obtaining one hard, poorly packaged

We'd previously had an HP Scanner, which did nothing but crash the computer it was on and could not be moved about very easily. Now I don't know the ins and outs of scanners, but I know they're not all £60 and of good a quality as this one. Mustek are not very well known and don't have the distribution of the HP / Lexmark / Epsons of this world. I can say though that we have had no problems whatsoever with this scanner. Review of Mustek 1200 CP

Take your filthy paws off my scanner

Advantages: No extra power cable, light weight
Disadvantages: Slow, problems with Windows service pack 2

...For some reason I have never had much luck with scanners, I have had about 4 in my life time and each of the first 3 have died some nasty death, the worst being that the last one decided to start smoking before the glass cover shattered. Anyway, I luckily stumbled across my latest scanner a couple of years ago, being the Mustek Be@rPaw 1200CU Plus scanner, and other than a couple of issues with it working on XP service pack 2; it has been a real star. ►►► The Look This is what I would definitely call a slimline flatbed scanner and at just 3.7 cm in height I would hope you would agree. ...After my less than flattering review of the Epson Color Stylus 300, I thought it is time to embark on my next challenge: a review of the Mustek 1200 UB. This won't mean much to many of you, but it is, in fact, a colour scanner. I got the scanner when I bought my home PC several years ago. I do not use it that often, but it certainly comes in handy at times when I need a quick copy and it is inconvenient to go out and get a photocopy. Let me tell you a little more about it. The Mustek UB 1200 is a nice compact scanner measuring 21.6cm by 29.7 cm (8.5" x 11.7") and weighing 2.3kg. Average scanner

Advantages: Cheap. Slimline.
Disadvantages: Always 'on', Average quality scans

...I purchased this USB scanner for around £60. It is a very slimline scanner in a stylish deep blue colour. Its top resolution is 1200 x 600 dpi which is more than enough for any task you have in mind. Realistically, 300X300dpi is what I use for most scans. Any higher and you end up with a file measured in gigabytes! The 1200cu performs well. Is very quite and uses the new type of scanning head; a sort of long scanning head the fule width of the scanner as aopposed to a scanning head that move left/right as well as up down. A good range of software is included (OCR and photo software as well as twain drivers). One major grip i have with this scanner is the way it is powered. Instead of drawing power from the USB cable, it requirs a separate power pack.. messy. There is no on/off switch and when I power the PC down, the scanner stays...

A Scanner Darkly

Advantages: Good Special Effects
Disadvantages: Not many

..."A Scanner Darkly" is based on the novel by Philip K Dick. Richard Linklater's film stars Keanu Reeves as undercover narcotics policeman; Bob Arctor. This is an interesting film but it didn't really move me deeply. There was some good acting but the story line was simply not exceptional. On deep reflection it is not a film that I would recommend. Great Scanner

Advantages: good quality scanning
Disadvantages: software is rubbish, can take for ever to scan an image

...I bought myself this to scan various things (old photos, documents and some sheet music) and this does the job pretty well. It was a bit on the expensive side but I needed something that would give me good quality and I could trust that it would work well so I went for HP as they are well known for good quality products. TECHNICAL INFORMATION It can scan at up to 4,800 dpi (dots per inch) It has 96 bit colour It has a 216x311mm scanning screen Connects by USB It is 303x508x108mm (wxdxh) It weighs 5.2 kg So it can give you very good quality, it gets a lot of colours, it's got a decent sized scanning screen, it's pretty big and it's not a light weight utility. Review of HP ScanJet G4050 Photo Scanner

Its no Mustek

Advantages: Cheap, low profile and easy to use
Disadvantages: Limited funtionality

...I got my Mustek 12000UB during 2000 and found it to be a great investment. It cost me less than 40 pounds brand new and is surprisingly good at what it does. It came packaged with a very slick, albeit limited, software suite that includes all the functions necessary to Fax, Photocopy, Scan images and text and an entry level version of Xerox's Textbridge. All in all I do very little scanning at home but needed to have one there for the odd urgent job. Since then I've used it regularly and encountered very few problems. The OCR software sometimes produces erratic results when the original source is not clear - but then I've used top of the range OCR software that does the smae thing. The software does not deal with formatted text, such as columns and tables, but I've devised a few shortcuts to minimise the limitations. The image...

...Ciao have got the best price for this neat little device spot on. I ordered mine from Directfrom.com for £86.88 on 28/11/04 as a Christmas present for my 13 year old daughter. The order was confirmed by email immediately with a 1 ? 3 day delivery time. You do need to be aware, however, that Directfrom send via Amtrak so if you?re not at home to sign for the package then you have to go to the nearest Amtrak depot to pick it up! The box is about 6 x 4.5 x 3.5 inches which worried me as I was expecting a small, hand held device, but, never fear ? you will not believe how small the camera is when you open the box!!! Review of Mustek DV 5000

Ultimate Scanner, Cheap, Cheerful!

Advantages: Cheap, USB powered, not bad software (except text recognition)
Disadvantages: Slow, Text recognition software is hopeless

...I've had this scanner for ages...so long that I can't remember when I actually got it! But this does show that it is built well, as it has been moved around my house to a number of different locations, and been bashed around a bit, and still works fine! However, even though it is durable, it is slow, taking about 30 seconds on average to scan 1 page. This doesn't sound too bad, but compared to some it is very slow, but for the price you really can't complain! Also the text recognition software that comes with it is hopeless, to test it I printed off some text from Word (at about size 14), scanned it using the software and it had trouble picking that up, it came out with about 3 different sizes of text and about 3 different fonts! The speed of scan and text recognition are about the only bad things I can think of about this scanner...
