Its no Mustek
Advantages: Cheap, low profile and easy to use
Disadvantages: Limited funtionality
...I got my Mustek 12000UB during 2000 and found it to be a great investment. It cost me less than 40 pounds brand new and is surprisingly good at what it does. It came packaged with a very slick, albeit limited, software suite that includes all the functions necessary to Fax, Photocopy, Scan images and text and an entry level version of Xerox's Textbridge. All in all I do very little scanning at home but needed to have one there for the odd urgent job. Since then I've used it regularly and encountered very few problems. The OCR software sometimes produces erratic results when the original source is not clear - but then I've used top of the range OCR software that does the smae thing. The software does not deal with formatted text, such as columns and tables, but I've devised a few shortcuts to minimise the limitations. The image...

The Ultimate in Home Scanners
Advantages: Great software included; clear imaging
Disadvantages: Scanning is perhaps a bit slow; scanner can be quite noisy
...After my less than flattering review of the Epson Color Stylus 300, I thought it is time to embark on my next challenge: a review of the Mustek 1200 UB. This won't mean much to many of you, but it is, in fact, a colour scanner.
I got the scanner when I bought my home PC several years ago. I do not use it that often, but it certainly comes in handy at times when I need a quick copy and it is inconvenient to go out and get a photocopy.
Let me tell you a little more about it.
The Mustek UB 1200 is a nice compact scanner measuring 21.6cm by 29.7 cm (8.5" x 11.7") and weighing 2.3kg. The technical term for it is a 'Flatbed Colour Scanner', but I shall just refer to it as a scanner.
Like any other home scanner, its design is quite simple. It has a document cover which lifts up to reveal the scan glass window, and a USB cable...

Cheap but Very Cheerful!
Advantages: It does the job
Disadvantages: Nosiy and a little slow
...I recently wrote an review on my 6 year old almost antique printer, well here is the review of the Mustek 1200 UB Scanner that came as part of that same package, as I am not too much of a technical person, I will try and explain in plain English without the technical jargon that I feel sometimes goes over us non technical folks heads.
I don’t use it perhaps as frequently as some would require, maybe in the whole 6 years I’ve had the scanner probably scanned around 200 times or so, but I believe it’s a good quality budget scanner as you can now pick one up for around £25, maybe even cheaper at a car boot sale or ebay, well worth checking out.
The scanner itself does not look of superior quality, it does look rather basic in a light grey plastic, the lid is rather lightweight with a black spongy inner for protection...

At under 30 quid will it cut the Mustard
Advantages: Price is cheap for a good budget scanner
Disadvantages: If I was paying £100 then I would pick faults. Im not so I wont
...around the shop and found a few scanners under the sub £50 mark. I asked the salesman which scanners were XP compatible in my price range and he recommended the Mustek 1200 UB Plus, which had the new software and drivers on the disk rather than downloading them from a website. I was a little unsure of the scanner because of the cheapest model, but was reassured when talking to the salesman while paying for it. He told me he used the same model scanner at home and he rated it far better over much higher priced models and he found the quality of the scanner very high.
You can tell the scanner is of a cheap nature by its quality of the plastic. However the scanner itself is of below average size (41cm x 27 cm x 5 cm) and weight (2.9KG) but still has the same size glass surface as my old model. The main feature than impressed me over my past...

Ideal for casual users with a free USB port
Advantages: good value for money, convenient USB plug-n-play feature, includes a decent OCR text recognition program
Disadvantages: a fairly redundant image-editing program, requires a USB port to function
...As far as scanners go, this one should more than meet the needs of users who adapt it to any non-professional application. I acquired the Mustek 1200 UB just over a year ago (costing about £45, though this is a vague estimate, since it came bundled with my PC), and have been more than satisfied with its performance. Its plug-n-scan status means that, through a USB interface, one need only plug it into one’s PC for the green light to come on and for it to start working. The necessity of an additional power supply is thus eliminated entirely (though a USB port is obviously essential).
The scanner comes bundled with Ulead PhotoExpress 2.0 SE, the main scanning and image-editing program, and TextBridge Classic 2.0, a very useful program that uses OCR technology to recognize letters on scanned documents, faxes, and even images...

Irias and the technology..
Advantages: intensively colors
Disadvantages: OCR function
...It occurs again and again that one would send pictures or photos gladly by Mail to dear joy, or she on the own web page of the world to show would like. If one is not proud owner of a digital camera, or which did not make pictures to be able to usually further process remains only the alternative her for in scanning around her then at the PC. Also beside my PC scanner is to be found. Decided I for the Mustek 1200 USB pluses. The scanner is gotten in different electrical markets too and the ex-factory price is appropriate at present for 59 ? and 75 ?³.
The scope of supply:
Beside the scanner
is still another USB cable, operating instructions in the supply extent of the Mustek, which are to be found driver CD and CD on that the program photo express. In addition that CD with the driver are to be found Acrobat reader and the Fine...

Fed up with losing photo's?
Advantages: Ease of use and long lasting
Disadvantages: None that spring to mind
...Well here we have it, can't say I was impressed when I first got this scanner! My reason for that is that I didn't actually know what it was or how to work it, having seen one before.
It was 2nd May 2000 (back in the days of WIndows 98SE) when I decided to get my first ever internet going PC in my house, with it I got the Mustek 1200 UB Plus scanner. Borrowed the PC repair man from the local IT shop who came round and set it all up for me and showed me how to use it all. (All went well and we married this year, I know it's off topic but sorry).
Anyhow, so I have this scanner. Great! Soon I was borrowing photo's from all my family to scan and have copies of them backed up onto floppy disc's. (Sigh... they were the days! Now using CD's and DVD's - great for family get togethers).
5 and a half years later the scanner is still going...

scantabulous
Advantages: Quiet and compact
Disadvantages: Dont Use The Software
...of installing the disc. Everytime I tried to use the scanner I had a message saying I had overloaded the usb ports, and then the scanner wouldnt work.
I soon dumped all that and put it in the other way.
So all in all a good deal. There are probably others on the market that are better, but if you dont have much to spend (or like me and too tight to spend it) this scanner will do very nicely thank you.
Some techy stuff:
...Slim scanner through CIS technology
...Optical resolution up to 600x1200 dpi
...Maximum scanningsize DIN A4
...Easy and fast installation through USB-Port .
...TWAIN-compatible
...Big software bundle containing a Picture-Editor . and OCR-Program
for the full techy specs go here : http://www.mustek.de/eng/html/produkte/se1200ubplus.htm
thanks for reading :)...

High quality 48-bit scanner
Advantages: Scans in both colour and black/white, cheap, runs on most OS's
Disadvantages: reasonably slow scanning time
...The Mustek ScanExpress 1248 UB scanner is very old now and due to its age it has become very cheap. I was given this very flat-bed scanner by my uncle, the reason for that act of kindness was not due to his love but due to his computer retail shop being brutally burnt by a gang of thugs.
This scanner was built to scan A4 (216mm x 297mm) sized documents, but is quite capable of scanning larger documents separately. You will have the option of scanning your documents in black and white or in colour. The greyscale depth on this scanner is 16-bit (64k colours), this basically means that the scanner can capture 64,000 shades of grey from pure black (0) to pure white (64,000) with 63,999 grey shades in-between. The colour depth for the 1248UB is 48-bit, which is standard on all new flat-bed scanners. 48-bit is a term given to a colour...

Cheap and cheerful A3 scanner
Advantages: Cheap, easy to use
Disadvantages: Software too simple
...If like me you work mainly in A3, I am sure you have discovered that although cheap A4 printers are two a penny, there is a distinct lack of choice of A3 scanners, or at least affordable ones! So with a budget of less than £100, I had a choice of, well, one scanner?.So needless to say I went with that one, the Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB!
Appearance
Well, although not attractive it is very compact! Only marginally larger than an A3 sheet, I can't see how it could be any more space saving, well other than a vertical scanner I guess!
Although it's a new model (based on the Mustek ScanExpress A3, non USB version!) it is only available in computer beige, so Mustek appear to be lagging behind a bit and missing the whole grey computer revelation, which is a bit of a shame when you consider most scanners sit on a desk in full view...
