...This is my second hard drive. The first one I bought was a sony vaio that I bought off of ebay - a portable 120GB hard disk drive from the far east. It started giving me disk read and write errors about three to four months after I bought it. Moral of the story, buy from a reputable manufacturer and seller. So I bought this from Amazon co uk, who are by far a superior online seller. Prices have come down and i managed to get this for £60 including free delivery. The drive is compact, not portable. It needs to be plugged into mains as well as the computer which makes it less portable, but it is so quiet I can't even hear that is switched on even when it is writing or reading. I would highly recommend this product or even one of the bigger sized ones, though I couldn't afford the 1TB mybook. Remember 500GB is marketing, actual... Read review

...This is another superb hard drive from Western Digital and at a whopper 1TB i had the pleasure of using it at my girlfriend's house. This is a very cool and compact metal-cased storage device that works as well as you would expect from Western Digital, which means phenomenal performance at a great price. Design Its presented in a big box, and I was very relieved (and also surprised) to see how small it actually is! At 8cm in width, by 1.5 in height and 13 cm in depth, the passport fails to take up much space on your desk or on top of your pc tower. Its a miniscule 105 gs which means i can hold it in one palm quite easily. The stainless steel enclosure case is attractive and i hardly notice the sounds it makes when transferring files, thats how quiet this metal box is! ...This is a bargain that i couldn't pass up without buying. 1TB should keep me going for several years and more. I bought this hard drive for £101 and it has been a pleasure to use. It's a doddle to set up and install and the fast rate of transfer makes file sharing very efficient and easy. Design The portable hard drive comes in an attractive silver case that has USB2 and FireWire 400 ports. It is a desktop drive and cant really be moved around due to its size. Installation The instructions were easy to follow and it installed by windows wizard as soon as i plugged it in, so within 20 minutes i was backing up my files. Performance Performance is good for a portable hard disk, and there was no real difference in speed between the two interfaces. .... As with all external hard drives of this type, it is easy to use - just plug it in, switch on and you're done. Windows loads the drivers automatically and assigns a new drive letter. The supplied CD contains some backup software which I haven't trid to be honest so I can't comment. In use it seems fine. I copied some files across and it seemed to work well enough although it did feel a bit sluggish so I did some tests against my other external hard drive. Sure enough, it was slower in certain circumstances. Copying a big file like a movie was about the same speed as the other drive but copying lots of smaller files was signficantly slower. I've done some research and it seems to be the overhead in managing all the space as Windows loads the entire file structure in to memory which with 1TB is quite sizeable. I inserted the USB canle and within a minute of plugging it in I received the software had been recognised and it was well on its way to fulfilling its purpose. Moments later the software was automatically installed, and it was ready for use. Its recommended for use on Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Apple MacOS X 10.1.5 or later, Microsoft Windows Vista. I moved all of my games and some music files to the hard disk, along with backups of university work, and photos (the 3 rules of computing are back up, back up, back up!). Performance It transfers at a rate of 480 Mbps which in practise turned out to be surprisingly fast. Access time was very quick, 12ms per second seek time... Read review
