Great Multimedia Wireless Router from Belkin

Advantages: Reliable, Fast, Easy to configure, Lots of features, USB for sharing drives
Disadvantages: Bit expensive, Not full speed with every machine

...INTRO The Belkin N+ router is one of the higher end (consumer) wireless modem router offerings from Belkin. It cost me £85 from PC World, but can probably be found for a bit less if you shop online. The Cable version costs a little less. Reason I bought this one was because two PCs in the house with wireless cards kept losing the wireless connection when I was using a Linksys router (my own PCs / laptops were fine though!). I replaced that with a second hand Belkin, which worked fine but unfortunately, a power cut killed the wireless on it. Advantages: Fairly easy to set up, easy to use, reliable, looks good.

Advantages: Extended range, capable of streaming HD video (mostly)
Disadvantages: Susceptible to interference, needs matching adapters

This DOES work quite well though best results are with matched adapters and routers so figure in buying replacement adapters when considering the cost of this router. N1 - the latest wireless protocal is 802.11N, this is still NOT official, but everyone (including Belkin) was bringing out 'Pre-N' kit which, in general wouldn't talk to other manufacturers. ...I bought this router as my old one was USB connections only. The price was fairly reasonable from Curry's (£58) and the salesperson gave me enough advice to feel able to set it up on my own! It comes with an installation CD which explains the process in plain english, however, the manual on the CD re-routed me a lot when I found problems after initially installing it onto my laptop. It installed but wasnt picking up my IP address. I called the Belkin helpcentre (which is a lo-call number), and they were very helpful, they found my IP address and directed me to an 'online' page which houses all of my info about the router. I searched around the net and found Digital-Fusion.co.uk at the lowest price (and actually in stock)including postage, which was advertised as 4-5 days. I received a confirmation email of my order, an hour later another email stating the unit was with the courier and would be delivered in 24 hours! I had the router at 12:30pm next day, a great service. The hardware set-up instructions were simple and all leads required were in the box. After connecting the leads to my desktop pc, I ran the software set-up from the disk - this was the best bit - I have VIsta Ultimate 64, something that confuses other modems, including my old Belkin model. It is for use with BT Internet connections rather than for use with a Cable broadband connection (i.e. Virgin) although a Cable version is also available.
