Cool sounds
Review of Nakamichi Sound Space8 by SimonJ

Advantages: Style, size, sound quality
Disadvantages: None really

...The last time I bought a hi-hi it was over 10 years ago and it was obvious when looking at the system. A selection of very large black hi-fi seperates joined together with metres and metres of cabling. Not too good in my stylish flat...the CD player was starting to wear out too. It had to go! Having spent over a £1000 on my car system it needed to be good for me to be satisfied with the sound, but needed to be sleek and stylish so that it didn't dominate the appearance of the room. That's where the problem was - good sound quality normally means boring design and good design normally means poor sound quality. Not strictly true, but there are very few that combine the two for around £1000. I noticed the Nakamichi SoundSpace 8 as soon as I got to the hi-fi dealer. It's incredibly small - it's about the size of a sheet of A4 paper... Read review

Review of the Nakamichi Sound Space 1
Review of Nakamichi Soundspace1 Compact Music System by JamesinOxford

Advantages: Quality of build, Easy to use, Miniscule, Sound, Style
Disadvantages: Price, Price, Price

...be attached, but that’s because of my personal preference, as I don’t like wires showing. There are 2 alarm settings, initiating the mode CD or radio as you choose to wake up to. All the cables FM aerial, power, speakers have the cables routed to the underneath of the unit with exception to the line in, headphones and analogue / digital line out which are all on the top rear of the unit. The unit is operated either by the remote or using the logical layout (mostly logical with the exception of the memory functions of the CD Player which could have been easier) on the top of the machine. Both of which are a positive and quality feel, but due to the number and variables on the unit it takes a little time to get used to, mainly because it’s first thing in the morning when I use the machine. There is no amplifier in the unit itself, just... Read review

Linn Majik-i Integrated Amplifier
Review of Linn Majik I by puzz1

Advantages: Great Integrated Amplifier, good sound
Disadvantages: Awkward buttons, faulty remote control

...I have owned a majik-i amplifier for many years. As standard the Majik-i comes C.D. ready only, but you could have a Phono stage added(stated on purchase) for moving coil or moving magnet .The sound quality is very good and has not de-graded, but however, the button control unit on the front of the amplifier while still under warranty started to become awkward to use. I sent the amplifier to my local dealer for repair. I was told that it was dust under the buttons membrane. I was still not happy with the operation of the buttons. The amplifier was then sent back again and I presume, a new button unit was fitted. Today the button operation I think is still not satisfacory and because of this the writing on the buttons has now worn away where it is so awkward to press the buttons. Another reason for the excessive button wear... Read review

Best sound quality by far!
Review of Genesis 5 channel In-car amplifier by carlossus

Advantages: Sound quality, good looks, brilliant service
Disadvantages: Some may think it expensive

...First of all, if you need to ask the price then this probably isn't the amplifier for you. It costs £750 for the amplifier, but after the cost of decent speakers and cabling you are looking at well over £1000. The reason for buying this amplifier is purely for sound quality, as pure as pure sound can be. As the name implies, it has 5 channels. 4 for upfront speakers and on dedicated to a sub woofer in the boot. The first 4 channels can be loaded down to 2 ohms each giving up to 80 WRMS per channel, with 4 ohm bridging between channels 1 & 2 and channels 3 & 4, all with a whole range of crossovers to suite any speaker system on the market. The 5th channel can be loaded down to 1 ohm and punches out up to 400 WRMS, also with all the crossover settings you could possibly need. The amplifier arrives in a very fancy box with instruction... LK 85/140
Review of Linn LK 85 by goldenears

Advantages: Linn name
Disadvantages: Better amplifiers for less money, LK140 is the better option

...I had an LK 85 on loan from a local HI-FI shop, as my power amp had developed a fault. Their is not much to tell when it comes to power amplifiers, as all you have is a mains switch a set of input connectors and speaker outlet posts. The LK 85 is not much to look at, but then most other power amps, with the exception of valve power amplifiers are basically a plain box. The LK 85 comes in a solid good quality box with just an on off switch on the front facia and a small led to let you know that the amp is switched on. You can have any colour you want as long as it is black (as far as I know). The rear facia has a double set of gold plated phono sockets for Bi-Amping and Linns Quirky speaker connections that double up so your speakers can be Bi-Wired. The usual 4 millimeter banana plugs will not connect to this amplifier, you need Linns... Read review

The Cat is Going to Learn about Sundays
Review of NAD 3020 by Champ666

Advantages: Cheap Good Quality Sound Repoduction
Disadvantages: Ultra Basic

...Separate systems are better than buying a integrated system for a few reasons, firstly they are better quality as each component of the system is dedicated to its function, in this case amplification. If one component gets broken then you can replace it easily, whithout having to replace the whole system and finally put quite simply they are cooler.................... I have had my trusty NAD 3020 amplifier for about 15 years It cost me around about 70 quid then, you can probabally get it cheaper now. Have a look on e-bay and see what they are going for........ It is a no frills basic amplifier with 4 inputs (CD,Phono, Tuner and Tape) and 2 stereo outputs, no fancy dolby things here. The volume bass and trebble controls are basic and fairly responsive to minor changes and even thout the power output is 20 Watts, it is still able... Read review

Pukka Stuff
Review of Pioneer A-705R by Andyroo007

Advantages: Looks Good, Fantastic Sound even at low volumes
Disadvantages: Remote Control !!!

...I have had this Amplifier for a while now, and it has given me hours of absolutely perfect listening. I have always liked Pioneer, I think that thier build quality is scond to none, if you have ever looked inside a Pioneer product you will know what I mean. This amplifier is great for listening at iethger louad or soft volumes. No one listens to music at 150db all the time So it is important for an amplifier to play well at low volumes. Thje pioneer still manages to give good bass response and very good clarity even at very low levels. I honestly can't fault this piece of equipment.... Read review

Infinity amps, solid performers.
Review of Infinity REF611A by XtremeOllie

Advantages: Sound quality and performance
Disadvantages: Higher power rateings are available.

...I had this amplifier in my car powering a set of front component speakers for about 6 months, this was my second amplifier that i had used and i can highly recommend it as a solid and good running piece of equipment. Infinity are a well respected manufacturer of in car entertainment, if you buy this amp i would suggest running a set of front speakers like i did and i would suggest buying infinity again. You can get more 'power' for your money by buying other makes but you will miss out on the stability and performance of the better makes such as this model and thats the most important thing when talking about sending power to your speakers. The amplifier itself is fairly basic and easy to install, it has solid connectors which allow the best connection of wires so again you gain the best possible sound experience.... Read review

THE MASTER Amplifier
Review of Pioneer A109 by oki82

Advantages: PRODUCES NICE AND LOUD SOUND
Disadvantages: LOOKS OLD.

...Despite that the amplifier looks old, may be you don judge the product by the looks rather you try and get the quality service. It" s services has lead me to satisfactory and the most exiting of all is that is very durable and strong. It has served quite long in my household. Well forming the habit of playing rock music with it is not a bad idea and that is what I actually do with it. Before I got this, I got confused and I had very strong debates on whether to buy a home theater or to buy an amplifier. Well if to say, both perform the same function capable of producing loud sound but there are some slight differences between this and a home theater in the sense that an amplifier does not have a remote control and on the other hand does not have small satellite speakers attached to it just like home theater. Second, the home theater... Read review

Pushing all the right buttons
Review of Sony TA-FE 330 by rjs26

Advantages: Looks, feel, price
Disadvantages: Sound

...I auditioned the 330 when I purchased a separates system during the summer. I was impressed with the sepecification of the amplifier for the price including such luxuries as a headphone socket and a remote control. The amplifiers controls and buttons were of extrodinary quality. You feel the need to fiddle with the volume, balence and tone contols purely as the they feel so good. The amplifier looks good too, far better than the Cambridge A4 that I purchased. The amplifier is a good choice if you are upgrading to separates from a mini-system but I would leave it alone if you are serious about your music. In my opinion sound quality is all that matters in a product such as this and whilst the sony is outstanding in all the ancillaty departments mentioned it falls slightly short on sound quality. There is a bright harshness... Read review
