Nakuru - Behind the Rhino, The real resort!

Advantages: Great Parks
Disadvantages: Niave Tourists

...Nakuru, Kenya, a place of magical beauty, where hotel prices range from £2 per night to £2000. An absolute contrast, but Im not going to talk about the national parks, they are beautiful, and I was fortunate enough to live in one for several weeks on a construction task for the Kenyan Wildlife protection folks. Im going to push my thoughts onto Nakuru itself, the city of Nakuru. Here we have a city trying to play big, in the day time, it beholds street sellers and street children alike, at night, it beholds night clubs / brothels and again, street children. I would rather divert my thoughts onto things that matter, rather than those that dont. There is a large community of children who live on the streets all over Kenya, and Nakuru has its fair share. These children make a living by sellinf whatever they can, including...

A Good Stay In Nakuru

Advantages: Location, facilities are very new, good staff
Disadvantages: parking--don't bring your own car!

...I travel often by road from Kampala to Nairobi, and on occasion I stay in Nakuru. The road from Nakuru to Nairobi can be a bit treacherous in the dark, and Nakuru is a good place to stay. Location The Merica hotel is new withing the past two years. It is located on the main business street of Nakuru next to the central post office and directly opposite of the Standard/Chartered Bank. From this location it is easy to arrange taxi services around Nakuru. There is also a SafariCom cellphone shop on the ground floor facing the street next to the entrace to the Merica. Inside The hotel has ten floors of rooms arranged around an open atrium inside. There are two lifts which service the floors. The lifts have a glass wall on the rear, so you can enjoy the view of the atrium and lobby as you ascend to your floor. The hotel...

Lake Nakuru National Park

Advantages: Flamingoes, Spotting Leopards, Lions, Rhino
Disadvantages: No elephants, small park

...I used to live in Kenya, about 50km away from the town of Nakuru. A regular activity for myself and the family would be to visit Lake Nakuru National Park every Wednesday afternoon. Having lived in Kenya, I had the chance to visit so many different game parks, however Nakuru has always been a firm favourite of mine. The park is set around Lake Nakuru, and so provides the perfect setting for any visitor to enjoy their game drive. The Park is very easy to drive around, so driving yourself is not a problem. The Lake is famous for its huge attraction of flamingoes (sometimes seen in their millions) throughout the year, which adds to the beauty of the landscape. During your drive you are likely to see an extensive variety of animals and bird life. The park is home to 4 of the big 5 with the park being too small to hold elephant...

Review of Lake Nakuru, Lake Nakuru National Park

Please consider your morals

Advantages: ?
Disadvantages: expense, unethical company

...I've had experience with two projects in Kenya- the 'building homes' and 'community work' in Nakuru. Unfortunately i-to-i are not interested in actually doing something ethical for these communities, but making money out of the desire for good-willed people to help others. I am not one for complaining but I feel that i-to-i's failure to be ethical should be documented. None of the massive cost that is paid to do projects go to the placements and although this was made clear to us (after booking) before we went, I am still not satisfied with the explanation of where the fees went. If you are thinking of booking though STA Travel, don't. They will say anything to get a sale, including a whole speal about how the fees DO go to your project, how insurance IS included (it's not anymore- i-to-i withdrew it and put the prices up so we...

Masia Mantastic!

Advantages: Weather, wildlife, adventure, experience, mad
Disadvantages: not long enough!

...Went to the Masia Mara on safari over the summer and have to say it was the most brilliant experience you'll ever encounter. I was only there for 3 days but boy where they a mighty 3 days. I was based around Lake Navisha on my Kenya trip, and traveled to the Masia Mara by rented Landys. This trip was long enough, the roads where fine until me just past Nakuru where we where of the beaten track on our way to the Masia Mara (the roads just not so good!). When we arrived at our safari accomodation in the middle of nowhere we recieved complimentry pineapple drinks, and where then shown to our tents. Now these where luxury with warm showers, flushing toilets and comfy beds. The food was amazing, morning, day and night. To top this all off the safari was magnificent. Our guide was a local Masia Warrior who just directed our convoy...
