...We were planning to visit Pompeii but finding a decent hotel close by was as easy as excavating these ancient ruins with a teaspoon. So Naples it was. The Holiday Inn looked perfect for our needs - on the edge of the city towards Pompei and easy access from the autostrade. When I say easy access, I mean 'in theory'...on a map...in my wildest dreams etc. The Holiday Inn is situated in a modern development of high-rise offices and commercial properties called Centro Direzionale directly connected to a link road from the A1 autostrade. But, this being Naples, where stock car racing is not only the principal hobby, it's downright de rigeur, it proved a little more tricky than directed from the hotel's web page. ...At the beginning of April 2004 I spent 24 hours in Naples (on my way to Sardinia), I´d like to take you with me and show you what I saw. I stayed in a hotel in the historical centre, Hotel Sansevero in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 9; 70 Euro for a single room (clean, quiet, nice modern furniture, small breakfast). The description on the net said, ´easily reachable by underground (Metropolitana) Montesanto station or by bus direction Corso Umberto´. Ha!, says I, nonsense, nothing is easily reachable in Naples that isn´t situated directly beside an underground station. There are only two lines in the whole city and they do not cross the historical centre. If you don´t know which bus number to take (the info on the net didn´t include it) and can´t speak the language well so that you can ask, this means of transportation is not advisable...

In 1984 I was a nanny for a family that lived in Milan.(see my op on Milan) and I ended up in naples with the family of 4 children that I was looking after, whose mother in law was Countess Leonetti from Naples,whose villa we visited when her grandchildren were on their summer holidays to stay with her.(phew! that was rather long winded..!) La Quinta Inn, Naples, FL: Bang for your Buck!

Advantages: Staff, cleanliness, close proximity of Naples Pier and food
Disadvantages: No water view from room we were in

...Accessible and Clean, on a Budget My girlfriend and I booked through hotwire.com and had a lovely experience. We stayed for 4 days and had an extremely pleasant experience. The website had us booked for a smoking room but we wanted a non-smoking and the manager made sure we were accomodated as soon as we requested a change. He had the staff clean the room to ready it for us even though I never would have guessed it was dirty in the first place. One of the CLEANEST hotels I have ever stayed in. The manager and other staff gave us advice on anything we wanted (restaurants, attractions, even beaches) without ever seeming annoyed. The hotel is extremely close to every thing in Naples and is a short drive from the airport in Ft. Myers. Pompeii to Naples..an archaeologist's playground!

...The disaster of August 24 AD79 when Vesuvuis erupted and destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum has fasciniated me since the age of 4. So much so that I even did my degree on the place. I backpacked across Italy in 2002 and Pompeii was the first stop on my list. The first thing to note that if you arrive by train from Naples is to realise that there are 2 stops for Pompeii. The scavi or the excvations and other being the new town of Pompeii. Be sure that you get off at the right one. The new town of Pompeii (not the excavations) is nohing special compared to other Italian towns, there are lots of dogs roaming the streets and think twice about driving, all cars are battered to glory! NAPLES - ONE DAY IS QUITE ENOUGH!

Advantages: scenery, atmosphere very stereotypically italian, ice cream
Disadvantages: dirty, smelly, difficult to navigate, roads dangerous

...I visited Naples as part of a cruise holiday around popular mediterranean destinations. I had high hopes, the city, its architecture, its ambience. Above all I was desperate to taste authentic, italian pasta, naples style. I was travelling alone for the duration of the one week cruise but was determined this should be an advantage rather than a pitfall. When the ship docked in Naples I went immediately ashore to enjoy the city and to find myself some beautiful views as well as a nice lunch in an authentic italian restaurant. The views were impressive, I walked (probably the long way round) up to the highest point I could find. My journey took me up steep, and very busy, narrow roads. Advantages: Utterly incredible views and atmosphere !!

...Thinking back, my ten day holiday in the Bay of Naples probably packed in more wonderful venues than any other holiday I have taken. I visited Pompeii, Capri, Herculaneum ,Sorrento, drove around the wonderful Amelfi Coast and I actually climbed to the top of.arguably, the most famous volcano in the world - Mount Vesuvius ( Monte Vesuvio) !! Disadvantages: can be a bit dirty, very hot in summer

...I've spent the last two weeks working in Naples, so this is my guide to the city. I've included a few restaurants, where I had great meals. I've included some interesting places I visited too. It is a dirty place, can be a bit smelly, it is noisy, the buildings and roads are in a state of disrepair, there is very bad crime, the drivers are?. Well let's be polite and say not too careful, that was the impression that I had of Naples before I visited, but what I found was that it is a vibrant, happening really interesting city, some fantastic architecture, lots of great restaurants, which I would encourage everyone to visit if they get the chance.
