A great airport hotel

Advantages: Cheap as chips, great quality
Disadvantages: Funky bathroom smell

...Well, some of the more observant of you may of noticed that I tend to travel a far bit. In fact, going through my old reviews from 2000 / 01, it appears that I have some review updating to do also! However for now, I'll concentrate on my recent experiences. I'm what you would call a mileage whore. Before you all go off complaining the Ciao that there is a sex pest in your midst, the term is used widely in the US, and means a person that is brand loyal for the benefits you get off the company you are loyal to. I didn't find it so bad...

Advantages: Main airport for Japan, helpful staff
Disadvantages: Hard to reach, lack of facilities unless you know Japanese

...Admittedly not the best tourist destination in Japan, the main problem with Narita airport is getting there in the first place - it's about an hour out from Central Tokyo and getting into the city centre can be expensive. I would advise not taking the JR line train but the Keisei line instead as it's much cheaper (unless you are lucky enough to have a JR pass). Driving or taxi would also be possible I suppose, but there is a toll road and Japan is expensive enough without extravagances! As for the airport itself, I found it pretty standard. Better facilities than most US airports, but less than Heathrow. There is a small arcade of shops and restaurants in the Departure lounge before you check in, naturally they're overpriced and fairly limited in what they sell but what do you expect from an airport? Review of Tokyo - Narita, Japan (NRT)

Sonny but no Cher

Advantages: Another good Chiba film
Disadvantages: Quite dated now

One of my favourite airline so far

Advantages: Very efficient, very courteous

...Constant traveling has permitted me to sample different airlines. So far, Japan Airline (JAL) has been my favourite. I have flown with JAL to Narita, Sydney, New York and San Francisco numerous times, and they have never disappointed me once. The ground crew are extremely efficient and courteous. On one of our frequent trips in and out of Australia, we always have to fly to Sydney because its the main hub for JAL. Our baggage would have been checked all the way to Narita in Japan and in Sydney, there is always a special queue for passengers without check-in baggages. This allowed us to obtain our boarding passes very quickly. On one occasion, they gave us seats in the economy plus section and I must say, it was the best flight I ever had. A cost effective way to travel Japan

Advantages: A great way to save money on long distance travel in Japan
Disadvantages: Can only be bought outside of Japan

...If you are planning on travelling to Japan and travelling the country via trains this pas is for you. The pass gives you free travel on all JR trains both long and short distances, JR bus routes, the JR ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima, JR subway lines (this is not all subway lines) and the Narita express from Narita (Tokyo) airport into the centre of Tokyo. They are valid for 7, 14 or 21 days and you can buy for either standard class (ordinary) or first class (green). There are also tickets that cover only parts of the network rather than the full network. An adult 7 day ordinary pass will cost you 28,300 Yen. A return ticket from Tokyo - Kyoto will cost you 27,040 Yen so only a couple more journeys will make the ticket worthwhile. Review of Japan Rail Pass

A JAL'y good way to fly

Advantages: Very friendly staff, good seat, very clean
Disadvantages: Food might not be for fussy eaters, lack of seat storage

...of drinks, plenty of newspapers and magazines in English and Japanese and the usual snacks you'll find in a lounge like cakes, biscuits and alike. Boarding announcements are made for every flight, there aren't so many so it's not a lot of work for them I imagine. The lounge wasn't crowded but our flight was really rather empty so it's possible the lounge would be much busier at peak times. Coming back from Narita was a lot more pleasant than Heathrow, security was less of a hassle although the shopping opportunities are just as bad for a cheapskate like me. There are a number of large lounges at Narita providing free internet access and snacks and drinks as before. Things were a lot busier but the lounges had adequate room. A superb value hotel in one of the best Tokyo locations

Advantages: Clean, modern, excellent location
Disadvantages: Small rooms and not cheap, but not many places in the area are cheap!

...I'm lucky to have never stayed in a bad hotel in Tokyo. For this trip I decided I wanted to stay near Shinjuku, so previous hotels were out of the question and my budget is getting smaller all the time. Through a combination of reviews on Tripadvisor, rating on hotels.com and a good listing of hotel rates from lowest to highest there emerged a clear winner, the Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku! Getting there We arrived in Tokyo on the Shinkansen train from Kyoto, switched train lines at Tokyo station and emerged at Shinjuku (one of the major stations in the city). The journey from Tokyo station was easy, it's not hard to get to Shinjuku really as it's such a major station. ANA - The Best Airline

Advantages: Efficient & Friendly Service

...I traveled on ANA from San Francisco to Tokyo Narita, roundtrip in September 2003. They use a brand new Boeing 777 aircraft, which is kept very clean. Even during the flight the aircraft is kept tidy, by the very young and beautiful Japanese cabin attendants. During the long 11 hour flight they kept themselves busy. They take care of their passengers so well that you will probably not need anything throughout the flight. However, if you do and you push the call button they will be at your seat within 15 seconds to ask you what you require. In the economy class, every seat has a seat back TV monitor, which you can watch a variety of movies or play a selection of Super NES Nintendo games. Each economy seat has its own foot rest, which is quite nice. During taxi/take-off and landing they show you the view infront of the aircraft...

Japan at it's finest

...bottles at 500 Yen. (about £2.50) They were showing John Q and Shrek. Also was the evening news and some sitcoms. Meals were array of Japanese delicassies as well as the Western Cuisine. Somethings on my plate included small Japanese Salmon Sushi rolls, Soba (buckwheat noodles with soup), beef stroganoff, a crisp salad, coffee and a peach cake. I couldn't quite finish it. The attendants didn't mind and took your tray once you were finished. During the long night, some of the attendants stopped by to chat. They were friendly and spoke english very fluently. And when we arrived at Tokyo, they all greeted goodbye to us and I was off. At Narita(Tokyo) From here I came to a shock.
