Advantages: The best Nazareth album in years Disadvantages: none I can think of
...I almost fell off my chair when I heard that my fellow Scottish rock veterans Nazareth had a new album out. I knew they had been touring hard for the last few years but this is the first new album in nearly 10 years, and it's release celebrates the bands 40th, yes 40th anniversary, and I can honestly say I've been there with them for 35 of those 40, since I was a wee 11 year old and first heard them on my portable radio.... ah the memories!
So, after all those years what do the band sound like? The most important part of the band was Dan McCafferty's very gravelly and whisky soaked voice. Suffice to say that proud instrument is still in fine fettle, and he can belt them out like he did at half his current age (he's well past 60 now!). The current band is a return to a basic 4 piece, McCafferty, fellow founder member Pete Agnew on bass...
Advantages: Classics , loud, good to dance and sing to , rock Disadvantages: Probably too old fashioned today
...Nazareth were a Scottish hard rock band of the mid-late 1970's. They were actually formed on Jan 1st, 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland. As such, Hubby and I were in our late twenties, or early perhaps thirties, when we saw them play at our local City Hall. At the time the audience mainly consisted of young lads, twenty years old or less, with almost shoulder length hair. My husband who at that age still had almost waist length hair looked like someone from the band or something more sinister. As such he got more than his fair share of attention. The audience were of the head banging generation. Still a great night was had by all, not least us, but I knew I was already getting old as the music was far too loud.
The band was originally a quartet but members have come and gone over the years. The lead singer is the most memorable for me...
Advantages: Fantastic acting, direction, location Disadvantages: None at all
...In 1977 I remember sitting glued to the TV each week watching the serialisation of Franco Zeffirelli's epic Jesus of Nazareth.
When Dave asked me if there were any DVD's that I would like as part of my Christmas present I said that I would like the DVD of Jesus of Nazareth so that I could watch it again whenever I wanted to.
The one that Dave got for me was the Special Edition DVD in a black metal case with a picture of the face of Jesus (Robert Powell) on the front.
The DVD set consists of two discs each split into two parts. The total running time is 374 minutes which works out at 6 hours and 14 minutes so you probably wouldn't want to watch it all in one go then! It has a PG certification with a warning that some scenes may be unsuitable for small children, which is logical enough considering that the crucifixion is shown...
...Nazareth has much history and is another tourist spot for pilgrims. I went there whilst on a tour in Israel, and as a Christian, was interested in where Jesus grew up. However, there is very little to see in the town of Nazareth as people have constantly lived in there. There is however, a huge Catholic Church in the town which has the remains of a house within it - which is suggested to have been the house where Jesus lived. As with many sites in Israel this can not taken too literally as there is no conclusive evidence to say 100% that this is the house. There is another church in Nazareth which owns a small room below the ground which could be the remains of a synagogue and as this is the only remains of a synagogue within Nazareth, which has been found then it seems possible that Jesus would have been there as he spent most of his...

Review of Nazareth (Israel)
Advantages: Dan the man, This Flight Tonight Disadvantages: Manny's tache
...I remember the first time I clapped eyes on Dan McCafferty and Nazareth as if it were yesterday, but actually it was almost thirty years ago. It was on Top of the Pops and the Nazz were performing their debut single (it was, wasn't it?) Bad Bad Boy. It was all vivid close ups of Dan with his frizzy hair with the centre parting and the grimacing teeth and screaming ...
I remember how very impressed I was even then.
I liked their first few singles and then I got totally hooked by their awesome cover version of Joni Mitchell's This Flight Tonight, absolute bloody magic...
I was a committed fan from that day on (well, I loved their singles and bought most of them anyway). Thus, the Greatest Hits album is pretty damn indispensable as far as I'm concerned with both Bad Bad Boy and This Flight Tonight, plus a host of others...
Advantages: original, well-executed, musically diverse and hugely enjoable! Disadvantages: vocals arent very accomplished ( though they still fit somehow)
...making a point that bears as much relevance today as ever. Or, to quote one internet source,
"The album is themed after the infamous carpenter-turned-teacher of Nazareth; a man whose radical ideas developed into a personality cult and, finally, after being Hellenised, Romanised, and Celticised, into a corporate religion - with him as a god - with over two thousand million slaves around the world."
Musically, the album is full of surpises. Whilst built around a backbone of fast, catchy (dare I say upbeat?) punky black metal, it is a hugely eclectic listen, incorporating quirky and atmospheric synths, jolly prog/folk interludes, Hawkwind-influenced space-rock passages, doomy, chuggy sections, weird middle-eastern sounding ethnic folk music and singing mixed with psychedelic electronica, as well as spoken word sections, melodic rock solos...
...Levi is the son of Alphaeus, a stonemason in the town of Nazareth. Lamb starts by recounting how the angel Raziel is dispatched by the Son, two millennia after Levi's demise at the age of 33, to revive him and to bestow upon him the gift of languages (not tongues!) and the task of recounting a very special story. Locked away in a suite atop the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis, Levi starts, albeit unwillingly, by explaining how he acquired the nickname Biff, and why he is best-suited to the task of documenting the events that surrounded his best pal, Joshua, son of Mary, whose stepfather was a carpenter from Nazareth.
In between thoughts of escape from his angelic protector and captor, Biff tells us about the boy Joshua, his attempts to communicate with his real father, and Biff and Joshua's journey together as they sought out the three...
Advantages: A Good Drama Disadvantages: Dodgy accents and unauthentic settings
...lacked a multi-million budget of today's films and there are none of the great Hollywood names of the era to be found here. Although some of the cast did go on to carve out successful careers following the success of this film.
Produced by Samuel Bronston and directed by Nicholas Ray, King of Kings tells the story of Jesus set against the backdrop of Political unrest due to the Roman Conquest of the Holy Land.
The story begins in Nazareth where Joseph is looking for shelter for the night for his heavily pregnant Wife, Mary. The streets are full of Roman Soldiers and there is fighting.
A man called John the Baptist is preaching the good word and telling everyone that the Messiah is soon to come. It is not long after Mary gives birth to her Child, Jesus, that the whispers begin. People are beginning to say that this was an immaculate...
Advantages: Top class humour Disadvantages: Might offend some people
...This film comes from the Monty Python crew and is about the life of Brian, a Jew who is mistaken for the Messiah and gains a cult following. The Monty Python crew each play several parts as they always do and they make this film a classic. The jokes are top class and non-stop and are very much in keeping with the Monty Python twisted sense of humour that we have come to expect from the classic TV series and previous films. This film has me laughing all the time when I watch it and it is easily the best the Python crew ever nmade. The humour might be considered sick at times and it did cause an uproar at the time as Christians protested about it being a parody of Jesus of Nazareths life, it isn't that. It makes fun of the people who distort Jesus's original message anfd these are the very people who complain about the film and still don...
