Relative to other singing couples of their day, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were the crème de la crème of the film musical world, and BITTER SWEET, the second film version of Noël Coward's operetta, brought the two lovebirds together in lush Technicolor. In addition to Coward's excellent score, which includes "I'll See You Again," "What Is Love," "Kiss Me," and "Polka," among others, the duo sings selections from both Puccini and Rossini. Set in the late 19th century, the film features MacDonald playing Sarah Millick, a singer who elopes with her music instructor, Carl Linden (Eddy). Unable to make a living in the Austrian music capital, the lovers set out to become street musicians. Their fortunes appear to be on the rise, but Sarah's fine looks soon draw her too much attention, forcing both her and Carl to defend her honour. With a great score and the unusual ending implied by the title, BITTER SWEET is a must-see for fans of MacDonald and Eddy. ... less

Maytime opens in the early 20th century, with a young girl arguing with her boyfriend over her wishes to become an opera singer. The girl's neighbour, a lonely old woman whom we gradually recognize as a convincingly "aged" Jeanette MacDonald, tells the girl of her own career in opera. The old lady was once the radiant young diva Marcia Mornay. In 1868 she was the toast of Europe, thanks to the tutelage of her voice instructor Nikolai Nazarov (John Barrymore). He proposes marriage, and Marcia accepts, more out of gratitude than love. In a euphoric pre-nuptial state, Marcia finds herself on Paris' Left Bank, where she meets handsome café crooner Paul Allison ( Nelson Eddy). They meet again at a lavish Maytime festival, falling in love (to the accompaniment of Sigmund Romberg's most dazzling duets) in the process. Sadly, Marcia returns to Nazarov, while Paul goes off to America to lick his wounds. Seven years later, Marcia, making her New York debut in a fictional opera based on the works of Tchaikovsky, finds that the leading baritone is none other than Paul. Unable to envision life without her new love, Marcia begs Nazarov for a divorce. He smiles slyly and promises to give her her freedom-whereupon he heads to Paul's apartment and kills the poor fellow. The flashback done, Marcia advises her pretty young neighbor that one can never have both love and a career. Out of tragedy grows the happy ending, in which the spirit of the now-deceased Marcia is reunited with Paul in a blossom-filled Hereafter. Peter uses his influence to get Lydia an audition at the opera house, where she is hired and is scheduled to perform later. The Prince, however, is not aware that she, her father and brother are part of a revolutionary movement. Their mutual deception is quickly shattered when Peter and the Cossacks violently break up a revolutionary rally in the public square, where Lydia's brother is killed. Soon afterwards, she learns that the rebels plan to assassinate Peter and his uncle, General Karagin, at the opera house on opening night, and still in love, she warns Peter not to go to the performance. Half Nelson- Ryan Gosling had me in a head-lock!
Advantages: excellent plot, great acting
Disadvantages: None at all
...the title is a perfect metaphor for the film, Half nelson (a wrestling term) illustrates to me that someone can be restrained to a point when they admit defeat; and only when defeat is admitted can they be free. Watching this film was a bit like finding £5 on the floor; it came from nowhere and made me intrigued as to what else the actor "Ryan Gosling" had to offer. The film offers a truly moving script...
