So NERJA, so farja

Advantages: Pleasant beach resort
Disadvantages: Too many 'British' pubs

...After a somewhat gruelling 10/11 days touring the cites and towns of Andalucia, what better way to unwind and prepare for the return to 'real' life than a few days at the beach. With this in mind, we chose to stay in NERJA, a more sedate resort than some of the brasher options on the Costa del Sol, further to the west. We traveled to Nerja by way of the mountain road from Granada and it's certainly an impressive way to arrive. Descending through spectacular rocky crags with only tantalising glimpses of the azure expanse of the Med whets the appetite suitably. Nerja is at the eastern extremity of Malaga province, 1-2 hours drive from Granada and 50km from Malaga airport. Nerja is, by Spanish costa standards, relatively unspoilt and under-developed. No huge monolithic temples to the concrete God here - not yet, at least. It still...

Nerja - Not Your Average Playa

Advantages: Quieter than your average resort. Good centre for touring
Disadvantages: Not a great family venue

...NERJA Nerja is an intimate resort on the Costa Del Sol in Andalusia. Unlike typical seaside venues, with huge playas, it is perched on cliffs above a series of small bays and beaches. Its longest beach, Burriana lies to the east and is a scenic stroll through the cliffs away. Its most famous landmark is the Balcón de Europa, a promontory named by a Spanish King who once admired the view from there - you know the kind of thing, "Verily from this day forth, this place shall be known as the Balcony of Europe" etc. This is now topped off in marble and a favourite place for the Spanish hobby of strolling nowhere in particular in the evening. The eponymous hotel is built into the cliffs to one side, and we have stayed there twice. It must be one of the few hotels in Spain where you enter at street level to have your bags sent DOWN to...

Nerja, British or Spanish

Advantages: Easy to get to, UK friendly with a touch of spain
Disadvantages: Not for the seasoned traveller

...Some people love nerja, others hate it. I think it depends on what you expect when you come here and what you came to spain looking for. When I first travelled up to Nerja I was told "its full of lager louts", "Its all british", " its full of tourists you can´t move".´This is not strictly true. Yes the british are here, and sometimes in great numbers but I have always found them to be a friendly well behaved bunch. Nerja is a lovely coastal town on the Costa Tropical. It is also listed in many guildes and brochures as the Costa del Sol which is not strictly true and the local certainly don´t regard themselves as being on the Costa del Sol. It´s clean, lively and bustles with life all year round. True in the height of summer there are many more tourists and you are unlikely to go anywhere and not hear an english voice but there...

Review of Nerja, Malaga, Costa del Sol

Nerja

Advantages: Beautiful scenery/Property/ weather.
Disadvantages: Noisy in October fair week

...Went to Nerja, Costa Del Sol in October year 2000. We stayed in a beautiful villa called villa Belgica. I originally swa it advertised in a villa brochure bought from WHS Smiths. The magazine is called private villas. The agent was called Derek Lansdell and he manages quite a selection of private villas come apartments.I searched on the internet and came across his web page. The address is www.solrentals.com . I had various chats before I booked it and found him very friendly. He will send you photgraphs with descriptions of the villas. My mum and dad came but stayed just outside Nerja, a town called Frigliana. They also had a beautiful villa. Nerja was a lovely place, the weather was glorious, temperatures reached the 90s which was surprising in October. There is plenty to do in Nerja. There is the Balcon de Europa which overlooks...

Review of Costa del Sol (Spain)

Nerja

Advantages: The all-year-round good weather, the scenery and the people
Disadvantages: The fact that in 10 years time it will be far more developed than it is now.

...Nerja is on the south coast of Spain, the Costa del sol, about a 1 hour drive east of Malaga. It is a special place because it is unlike any other on the Costa del sol. Nerja has been voted the prettiest village on Costa del sol more than once. Nerja has a building restriction that means none of its buildings may be more than four stories high. This makes a huge difference as there are no large, tower-block hotels in sight. Nerja is truly multi-cultural because so many people retire out there (not just English; American, Norwegian, Dutch, French, Canadian etc). Nerja has a massive English community with its own newspaper, theatre group, shops and businesses. I know this might sound a bit colonial, but you would have to see it working to appreciate it. There is no industry in Nerja except tourism. The locals tend to want...

A Pearl at the Marina

Advantages: Right on the beach, great views
Disadvantages: None...eventually

...We'd had some pretty good hotels on our trip to Andalucia, and we hoped that the hotel we had picked for our final three days wouldn't be any different. We wanted a comfortable room in a hotel on the beach with a nice sea view, but nothing too remote so that we could still enjoy all the facilities of a resort. Did we get what we wanted? Well, read on... We booked the HOTEL PERLA MARINA, in the town of NERJA, through bancotel.com. This is a Spanish based travel site whereby you purchase 'cheques' for 50 euros each. Depending on the hotel, season etc, a room costs between 1-3 cheques per night. This can mean savings of over 60% in some cases. Being the intrepid bargain hunter (some would say tight-fisted git) that I am, I managed to book a series of 3 and 4 star hotels for 50 euros. This hotel was no exception. Nerja is around...

To Nerja and beyond........

Advantages: It's spanish...a big plus to me
Disadvantages: It's spanish...it helps to have a phrase book

...Well actually just plain old beyond for me. I have been to Nerja but it's too expat and british for my tastes. When I travel I want to feel like I've gone abroad. I enjoy speaking broken spanish and making my phrase book work for it's money. One of the beauties of the Granada coast is just that...you can. Once you get off the new motorway at Nerja ( actually you have no option it currently ends there although I'm informed that the extension to La Herradura will be open by December 2005) and return to the coastal road or N340 you start to get back to spain as you imagine it to be. Windy roads, whitewashed villages, beautiful beaches. Even the plastic agricultural sheds start to dwindle along here as the Costa Tropical boasts an all year round mild, temperate climate. Don't get me wrong, there is tourism along this stretch of coast...

Nerja - The Jewel of the Costa del Sol

Advantages: Unspoiled with an authentic Spanish feel
Disadvantages: Some of the apartments are situated up steep hills

...I have been visiting the picturesque resort of Nerja for the past twelve years. I never seem to tire of it and there is always something new to discover. I have seen many changes, not least the new motorway; which has cut the journey from Màlaga down to approximately 45 minutes instead of the hour and a half it used to take on the coast road (N340). The motorway is excellent, although care needs to be taken if you are unused to driving in Spain. It is a very fast road and it can be a bit scary when traffic from the sliproad merges. There are several tunnels on the way to Nerja - remember to turn on your lights even in daylight when entering and turn them off on exiting. All this taken into consideration, it is a pleasant drive to the resort. Nerja has grown from a little fishing village into the International resort it is...

Nerja a dull moment

Advantages: Perfect family holiday
Disadvantages: None

...Nerja, east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, is the place to be for a wonderful family holiday. We wnet last August and we're going back this year. It was recommended by a friend and it sounded just right for us; quiet, lots of restaurants, excellent beaches and reasonably Spanish and unspoilt. She was right on all accounts!! We could only go in August so it was touch and go whether we could afford it. The packages, even the cheap ones, came out at around £2800 for the four of us (mum, dad, girl 10 and boy 8). So i decided to go it alone. Good thing I did and I'd recommend booking the holiday yourself. I found a three bedroom apartment on the internet: Spanishholiday.com. They are agents for private owners and you deal with the owners yourself. Excellent communication, very good price: £680 for two weeks in August. I booked...

Nerja - what a beautiful resort

Advantages: Old style Spain
Disadvantages: quite a steep walk to the beach

...We were looking for authentic Spain and we found it. Nerja is a beautiful town, much bigger than we expected but it retains all of it's original charm and character. We stayed on the "Burriana" side of town, which we thought was the prettier side, having the mountains as a back-drop. The main beach is Burriana which is accessed via a fairly steep hill from the main residential areas. I'd recommend staying on this side of town, but make sure that your accommodation is on the sea side of the N340 dual carriageway, otherwise you're in for a lengthy walk home. The beach itself is shingle but very clean, gently shelving into the sea. There are loads of restaurants on the beach, the best being "Ayo's" which is at the far end of the beach. Ayo is the chap that discovered the caves as a boy, and now wears plastic bags on his shins when...
