...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay... The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces. The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...

Netgear WPN824 Wireless router

Advantages: Wireless and Wired connections, easy to install
Disadvantages: Blue ring of light can be annoying, but can also be turned off!

...which is more than enough for my own requirements. It has also got 4 wired LAN ports and 1 WAN port (im not sure what this is!). This is useful as I often play my Xbox online and prefer it to be wired as I consider it to be more stable than a wireless connection. The router is downstairs and I have not had any problems staying connected around the house and always maintain an 'excellent' connection. Setting up the router was nice and easy using the CD provided. Initially, you need to be connected to the internet through an ethernet cable for the setup to detect an internet connection. The setup then provides easy to follow instructions on connecting the modem to the router, 'power cycling' the modem and router and also setting up the wireless connection and preferred security options. ...Picking a router is pretty difficult these days. There are an awful lot of routers out there and it is very, very difficult to choose the right one for you. The obvious things to consider are ? Netgear DGN200 Wireless Router what a pain

...I admit my computer knowledge is limited but I was led to believe this was an easy product to install on my home computer. I thought the instructions seemed easy to follow but when steps didn't go to plan I became stuck and confused. Next steps I phoned thecustomer helpline and was greeted with questions I didn't know the answer to and probally wouldn't have unless I had a degree in computing. All I can say is what a waste of my time trying to set this router up. I resulted in asking a good friend that works within the computer industry to come and help install the router. They said this wasn't an uncommon problem but does need improvement for everyday people to use. Now it is finally installed properly I have a working home network and haven't come across too many problems....

4 port router - low priced but reliable

...This unit replaced an awful Belkin router which was a simlar specification and price. This router was so much better, i.e. it worked, The installation was straightforward enough, and the router was up and running with 2 pc's connected without a problem. Compared to the Belkin unit it is a no frills product, the colour is OK, but whereas the Belkin looked sleek, thie linksys s more function over form. I wasn;t really bothered though, it was going to be sat next to the modem out of sight. The ethernet sockets are round the back of the unit, and the system LED's are on the front. Also the unit is stable enough not to be lifted when multiple wires are plugged into it. ...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear. I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name. The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. ...I used modems supplied my my internet service provider and experienced problems with connectivity and drop out. In the end I got so sick of phoning the ISPs to report problems to be given the same twaddle (updating drivers etc.) that I went into my local branch of PC World and asked for their recommendation. The Netgear DG834G was the salesman's recommendation. It cost £50 and has been one of the better purchases I have made. My desk top PC and now my son's laptop use the same router and the wireless signal has never failed. We do not suffer from connectivity issues and trust the routers security to protect us from freeloaders and hackers. I would personally recommend this router type over those supplied by service providers....

...The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSL modem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK.
