2007: New Orleans is recovering & worth visiting!

Advantages: Still the most beautiful city in the US
Disadvantages: Hurricane Katrina

...Reading the other site reviews, it seems like all of them were probably written before Hurricane Katrina did its job on New Orleans. I've been back there several times since the storm, and have a few thoughts. I myself am an expatriate New Orleanian. Born and raised there, I've lived away for several decades, but still have ties and visit occasionally. As it happened, one of those visits was on the weekend before Hurricane Katrina hit. I've been back three times since then, and have seen the city slowly put itself back together. There's no sugar coating it: Katrina did a number on the city. The house I grew up in was lucky: it was on the edge of the flood zone (which covered nearly the entire city, except for the older parts of town hugging the Mississippi River), and so only (only!) had four feet (1.3 meters) of flooding...

New Orleans

Advantages: Friendly people, relaxed atmosphere. Be prepared to party, and party hard!
Disadvantages: Keep away from the tacky and overpriced tourist area.

...My visit to New Orleans was pretty atypical, myself and a friend hired an aircraft and flew ourselves there from Georgia. For any pilots reading this, the trip was a good one, flying IFR and using Houston Centre for Flight Following and a Radar Service. being typically American aviation, the service was excellent and efficient, and despite being two semi-lost Brits in a single engined aircraft we never had the feeling that they were giving us anything but their friendly, polite best. New Orleans Lake Front Airfield is a controlled airfield about eight miles out from the city centre and has two parallel runways that extend into the Mississippi, undershoot and you're swimming. The facilities were good, offering cheap Avgas and a courtesey car, (Which had been commandeered by the time we go there!), tie down cost 20 dollars, but that was...

Tips for New Orleans

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...During my recent visit to New Orleans, I found it to be a small but very interesting city, very beautiful and well worth the visit. I would recommend staying outside of the centre though, because it can be very expensive. Most hotels run a free bus service to the French Quarter, which also means you don't have to pay for parking or have the inconvenience of this. If you are intending to stay in the French Quarter it is advisable to pre-book, since the hotels are often fully-booked. While there, I took a Grayline city tour, which turned out to be the best thing I could have done for learning about the city in an entertaining way. It took approximately two hours and was interesting throughout. There is no way I could otherwise have learned about the city, or visited these places in one day. Finally, visit the markets, you can get...

Forget Katrina

Advantages: Great City so much history
Disadvantages: Katrina has left its mark

...This review is about my time in the wonderful and majestic place known as New Orleans. This may be a long review, and for that I apologise in advance, however I don?t want to write multiple reviews about the different places you can see and visit, I just feel its fitting to fit it all into one large informative review, which will hopefully attract people to visit this place, or to at least get some idea of what the culture, lifestyle is al about, what there is to see and do and so on. New Orleans has never been the same since Hurricane Katrina hit a few years back, the devastation and destruction it caused is still evident even today, with many abandoned house?s, shops and bar. What really astonishes me about this city is the sheer grit and determination of the people to move on and stay where they belong. There were a number of people...

New Orleans French Quarter

Advantages: Inexpensive drinks, great food, fantastic music
Disadvantages: Not a place for children

...The party that never stops. This is the French Quarter in New Orleans. I have vistited the city twice in the past year. Once for pleasure and once for business. Both times I was amazed at the vitality and spirit in the heart of old New Orleans. From a historical standpoint, the Quarter has plenty to keep tourists busy. One could stroll the street for hours observing the old French-Style iron balconies mixed in with the more current building styles. Several little shops sell a variety of Southern items ranging from homemade praline candy to alligator heads. Voodoo shops are found on every block. This portions of the city is famous for it's nightlife. Driving through the heart of the Quarter is impossible as locals and tourists mix in the streets. Music ranging from Jazz to rock can be heard pouring out of the many bars. Girls...

Old Orleans

Advantages: Food is perfect
Disadvantages: service ruins it

...I live in the middle of two Old Orleans restuarants and i have been in four different ones in the past few years and before i review this particular one let me just make a quick point of saying that they are all pretty much similar. Opening Old Orleans in Enfield, opens at 12 every day and closes at 11.30pm monday to saturday and at 10.30 on sunday. Building This restaurant is located on a business park with a few other restuarants, a cinema and a gym. It is a relatively small square lot on the park and is easily seen and accessed from the main road. The builing is on one floor although round the edge inside, some of the tables are a step up from the others. Decor If you've ever been to an Old Orleans you will understand what I mean when i say the decor is 'busy' the Enfield one is no exception. Like all of the other...

Diamond review  A Kiss on the Lips from a Tart With a Heart

Advantages: Friendly, frenetic and fun.
Disadvantages: Too much partying can be harmful to your health (or so I'm told)

...Your first New Orleans kiss will come as you step outside from the air-conditioned halls of Louis Armstrong Airport. The warm, humid kiss of Louisiana. The hot and sticky breath of your southern soon-to-be lover will caress your face, and within moments, you?ll be struggling out of your clothes. Try to keep some control. It may be a party town, but even in New Orleans, cab drivers would prefer their fares to be decently clad, at least part of the time! Your taxi will speed you along I(Interstate) 10 as fast as the potholes and paltry speed limits will allow, affording you a scenic view of the high-rise part of the city on your left as you breast the heights of the elevated freeway. At night, the city lights reflect in the Mississippi below, and shine like a million stars as far as the eye can see. FACT BREAK Finding a bed in...

Old Orleans - Quite A Disappointment :(

Advantages: Friendly Staff, Relaxing Atmosphere, Nice Cocktails
Disadvantages: Overpriced, Slow Service

...To say my Fiance and I don't get out much is understatement of the year! We decided it was time we made more of an effort to get out and spend some quality time together wining and dining as it were and so for a change we opted to go to Old Orleans in Sunderland. We had never been here before so it was a bit exciting to go somewhere new for a change. The restaurant itself is nice and easy to find - no driving around in circles for hours sniping at each other, which obviously means that you can arrive still in good spirits and ready to enjoy your evening rather than sitting glaring at each other over the table adamant that the wrong turn was sooo not your fault! :) Anyway there is a decent sized car park and it is situated right next door to a Premier Travel Inn which means that you could potentially make an evening of it...

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Advantages: Compact city, good food and music, friendly people
Disadvantages: VERY HOT during the summer months

...Laissez les bons temps rouler!- Let the good times roll! Located at the mouth of the Mississippi river in the southern state of Louisiana, New Orleans is like a good gumbo..... a little bit of this, a little bit of that and A LOT of Hot Stuff! History: Many first time visitors are surprised by the definate European feel of the city. The architecture alone provides days of touring in itself. The reason for this Continental flavour comes from it's close ties to France and Spain. Louisiana was claimed for French king Louis XIV in 1699 and is the only state that was once a French royal colony. Then, later, it was ruled by Spain for 100 years. It is the only U.S. city where French was the predominant language for more than one century. New Orleans is often called the "Crescent City" because it was founded on the bend...

Cafe of My World

Advantages: Pleassant environment, wonderful coffee accompanied by great beignets.
Disadvantages: Its in far flung New Orleans.

...In case anyone complains that this should be in the cafe category, I had asked for this to be created in a new cafe category for New Orleans. Unfortunately, this has not happened. I don't know what to do ... anyway, onward with the story ... Cafe du Monde ... is a famous landmark in New Orleans. Ask anyone there. It was in the movie Runaway Jury starring both John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. It has served as a turning point of my life and I thought I'll share this little cafe with you. Extremely Short History ----------------------- The original Cafe du Monde was started by Fred Koeniger in 1862. In 1942, it was bought be the Fernandez Family. Til this day, it is still owned by the Fernandez family and Cafe du Monde serves their infamous coffee and beignets in the original coffee stand in the French Market area of New Orleans...
