Around the World in 80 Days

Advantages: Some funny moments, its entertaining, range of actors used (both English & American)
Disadvantages: Slightly slow in parts, a bit cheesy/predictable

...... but anyway, back to this movie... For anyone who isn't aware of the plot of 'Around the World in 80 Days', well really the clue is in the title! it basically tells the story of a somewhat eccentric Victorian English inventor called Phileas Fogg (played by Steve Coogan), who ends up making a bet with the head of the Royal Academy of Science, that he is able to basically circumnavigate the globe in no more than 80 days. If he manages this, then the head has to resign and he gets his position but if he doesn't manage it, then he has to leave the academy and never invent again. So, of course, he's very determined to prove that he can do it and he sets out on this long adventure to see the world. He doesn't travel alone however, having somewhat accidentally found his new 'valet' Passepartout (which isn't his name but is what he blurts out...

Around the world in 80 judo-kicks

Advantages: Jackie Chan fight sequences, silly fun
Disadvantages: REALLY silly, a plot you could fish with, and a travesty to literature

...the original story, we start with Jackie Chan's character (Lau Xing, aka Passepartout) attempting to return the Jade Buddha, sacred talisman of his village, after it was stolen by the evil Black Scorpion gang. Of course, as the statue is currently residing in the Bank of England we can see there might be a problem! While on the run from the police, Jackie stumbles into the role of new valet to absent-minded inventor, Phileas Fogg, played this time round - not by a lion! - but Steve 'Alan Partridge' Coogan in his first Hollywood role. Fogg's 'absurd' boast to the Academy of Science that a man could travel around the world - oh, you know the rest! - becomes just the opportunity Lao Xing needs to get back home, and he quickly manoeuvres Fogg into taking up the challenge. In much the same way as Lao Xing's opportunity, the 80 Days story is used as...

Around The World in 80 Yawns

Advantages: Good stunts
Disadvantages: The rest of the film

...I asked for this film to be added to Ciao but I wasn't informed that it had been so I nearly missed out on writing this review and I've certainly missed out on being the first person. But, better late than never! Here is my review of the film which I saw at a preview a few weeks ago. This version of the Jules Verne classic tale is directed by Frank Coraci and sees its two main stars engaging in a mix between drama, romance and slap-stick comedy. With the various kung-fu fighting scenes, it's a modern twist on an old favourite. It's a certificate PG. Coogan plays inventor Phileas Fogg and Chan ends up becoming his companion Passepartout when Fogg takes on a bet that he can get around the world in 80 days. Ewan Bremner, Jim Broadbent and Cecille de France also co-star. The plot starts at a very fast pace with the story...

The New World

Advantages: Historically very accurate
Disadvantages: Too centred around relationships

...Released in 2005, The New World stars Colin Farrel, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale and Q'Orianka Kilcher. It tells the true story of how the first English settlement in the Americas came to be; why it started, where it was, and how it developed. In 1607, the English arrive in what is now West Viriginia to build the settlement Jamestown, named after the King of that era. The team encounter various conflicts with the American Natives, and Colin Farrel as John Smith is eventually captured by them. The story continues to show the many problems the settlers faced, and their story up to 1616, whilst at the same time showing the love affair going on between John Smith and Q'Orianka Kilcher as Pocohontas. Having a great interest in this part of history myself, I found the narrative of the film absolutely brilliant as it really gives you...

Around the World in 80 Gardens

Advantages: Stunning gardens, lovingly presented by Monty Don
Disadvantages: Not much information on specific plants

...Around the World in 80 Gardens is a gardening programme with a difference, because it's looking at the contribution of gardens to cultures around the world rather than explaining how to grow your own garden or the basics of garden design. There are 10 episodes in the series, and as I am writing this only one has aired. In the first episode presenter Monty Don (who is also the main presenter on Gardeners World) visits gardens in Mexico and Cuba. Details of first episode The first 'garden' visited is the Floating Gardens at Xochimilco, near Mexico City. These gardens were built by the Aztecs, to provide food for their capital city, and have been in constant cultivation ever since (although the area cultivated has decreased considerably). The gardens don't really float, but they are man-made islands in a huge lake and rely...

Enter to a whole new world

Advantages: Different system of control, very beautiful looking
Disadvantages: better gameplay is on the singapore serve, which can mean cash issues, EU servers have poor status

...~ Summary ~ If you like your RPG in a anime style games then your in for a treat. However, this game and Granado Espada - they are basically the same game run by 2 different companies. Sword of the new world servers & financial services are run by Gamerfirst for Europe & USA, while Granado Espada is ran by IAH games for primarily Singapore and Asia (inc Australia). The other difference is the game patch numbers, the latest servers on Granada Espada are 5 - 6 issues ahead of Sword of the New World. The PK (Player Kill) system can seem confusing, being called both PK and Baron. Baron also leads to Murderer status which means everyone can take a pop at you. That said you cant fall victim to a Baron/PK er until after family lvl 5 (roughly 3 family members to lvl 50) so you do have time to learn about it before being subjected to it, if you...

Extraordinary world

Advantages: Great, Great, Great
Disadvantages: Last album, paralysed

...**Introduction** Widely regarded as one of Soul's finest, Curtis Mayfield first tasted success in The Impressions before embarking on a solo career. With hits such as Superfly, Hard Times and Baby It's you amongst others he was praised for his songwriting and silky smooth voice. Sadly tragedy struck his life in August of 1990 when he an outdoor concert at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. He was paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him. In his remaining years he was largely a recluse apart from a few appearances for award ceremonies. In 1998 things got worse and he had to have his right leg amputated due to complications with his Diabetes. But the year before that he released one last studio album. "New World Order". Just two years later he died **New World Order** This album was recorded...

Great Books-Around The World in 80 Days

Advantages: Great characters, superb storytelling, excellent moments of adventure
Disadvantages: Indians being shown as Uncivilized

...other Jules Verne classics like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea , Journey to Center of Earth . Around the World in 80 Days is the story of a reclusive British millionaire, Phileas Fogg whose only way of spending time is reading newspapers and playing whist at the Reform Club of which he is a member. At the introduction to the book, we come to know that he is very precise in nature and he had fired his servant because the temperature of the water he used for shaving was 2 degrees lower. His new servant Passerpatout a lively and passionate Frenchman thinks his master is as lively as the wax statues at Tussaud's but he wouldn't mind serving a machine . The novel's main point starts off with an intriguing conversation in his club about a robber making off with 55,000 pounds and the pursuit of him. As they discuss how...

Brave new old world

Advantages: Back to classic, epic, adrenaline-charged Maiden
Disadvantages: Bruce's voice has aged noticably

...Hurrah! Reason was listened to, hatchets were buried, and Bruce Dickinson was back with Iron Maiden once again. It had to happen for Maiden to be a force once more, and everyone came out of it with their pride intact. Blaze Bayley was fondly said goodbye to, and the band reconvened. But what was this? Legendary guitarist Adrian Smith also wanted back in? What a dream team! So, with all the original 'dream team' members back, plus Janick Gers, Maiden now had an awesome triple-thronged guitar assault team. The writing for 'Brave New World' began in 1999, just before the dawn of the new Millennium, the 'brave new world' of the future. There was also a welcome return for artist Derek Riggs. He co-designed the cover art with Steve Stone, a foreboding image of Eddie's face forming in the turbulent sky over a futuristic cityscape. Fans...

The STYX With New Songs

Advantages: New songs worth listening to from STYX
Disadvantages: Well, the band's previous albums are better

...The STYX With New Songs I purchased this STYX Brand New World about a year ago thinking I would be hearing new songs from STYX that still have the band's classic style. Then I realized that I was listening to different styles of songs from the band. I expected STYX to come up with a better album than the band's previous hit albums since the members just got reunited and they have rested for years after the split-up. This album may not be great but it is good. The STYX Tommy Shaw vocals guitars, keyboards Dennis DeYoung vocals, keyboards James Young vocals guitars Chuck Panozzo bass Todd Sucherman drums, percussion Jerry Goodman additional personnel for violin Tracks Listing 1.
