It was probably the influence of TV shows such as Friends and Will & Grace but since then I've always wanted to see what life in the big apple was like. There's the shopping (my number one priority!), the sights, the shows, the food, the list is endless. I was nearly 25 when I finally made it over there, as part of a family trip with my mum, dad and sister. Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone
Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels

.... This is a service from Amtrak and I think the ticket costs about 11$ per person for a one way ticket. To catch the train to NYC we took the airtrain at Newark Airport.. We had already picked up train tickets from a machine in one of the terminals but I don't think we would have known about this unless we had read about this in the guidebook. The tickets we bought were to Penn Station - the only problem is that there is one Penn Station in Newark and one Penn Station in New York. We managed to get tickets to the wrong Penn Station of course but it was not a big problem. I guess the air con on the train was out of order because it felt like we were in a sauna. And the train isn't really made for travellers with big suitcases so we had to stand with our bags on the trip to Penn Station. The trip doesn't take that long. All of sudden we were...

A New York State of Mind

Advantages: delicious cheesecake, very easy to prepare, success every time, short time to prepare
Disadvantages: takes ages to cool down, best done night before serving

...cook, her cheesecake was always a delight, despite using a lot of ingredients I don?t bother with, nor do I have the time to bake a very intricate cheese cake. I never had the time to follow her recipes and tend to take the easy way out. Dr. Oetker are a brilliant when it comes to quick and easy to prepare cake mixes, however, the New York style cheesecake is not what I call a last minute treat. It does take only a short time to prepare but the baking and cooling down time in the oven and then further cooling in the fridge take up the best part of 6 hours (three hours in the fridge you don?t really need to supervise and time). New York Style baked Cheesecake mix I?ve been using this cheesecake mix for quite a while now and it always turns out absolutely brilliant. I suggest you don?t prepare it last minute but maybe the day before...

Bentley Hotel - New York New York!!!!

Advantages: Clean, nice rooms - amazing views from roof top balcony
Disadvantages: 24 Hour coffee bar was actually a vending machine!!

...Park, where you can almost imagine you are no longer in a built up metropolitan city. We took a helicopter ride around the city while there and Central Park looks very very strange from the air. Like a large slab of green in the middle of a grey island full of buildings. Amazing. From our room we had a view of The Queensboro Bridge. It is quite amazing at night when all the lights are on. Incidentally this is the bridge they used in Spiderman, where he saves the people in the cable car. We watched Spiderman after we?d been to New York and it was instantly recognisable. There is a large area at the front of the hotel where your cab can pull up out of the way of the main traffic. The perfect location in New York

Advantages: Brilliant location, modern, big room, huge TV, one of the cheapest hotels
Disadvantages: Breakfast is expensive, toilet blocked a couple of times, not enough lifts

...The Park Central Hotel New York is in a brilliant location on 56th and 7th right in the centre of everything. A 10 minute walk downtown brings you to Times Square, 2 blocks uptown takes you to Central Park, 5th Avenue shopping is just 1 or 2 blocks to the east and a subway station 20 seconds away to take you to wherever else you want to go. Carnegie Hall is directly opposite and the Rockefeller Centre is less than 10 minutes away. The hotel is surrounded by gift shops and cafes and there's a nice little Irish bar just opposite. The location really couldn't get any better. When we first arrived it was difficult for us for find but that was only because we didn't have a map with us and because the grid system is so confusing at first. New York City's Best Kept Secret

Advantages: Small, Cheap, Quick to get around and beautiful animals
Disadvantages: Some animals looked way too hot in the heat we had. Wasn't sure if it was cruel or not?

...With the New York Pass we had the option of visiting two zoos, either the Bronx Zoo or Central Park Zoo. Well Central Park is only about a 20 minute walk from our hotel, so we decided it was probably better to go to this one rather than Bronx Zoo. After a very long day in the 90 degree heat, we finally arrived at the zoo, got our tickets and went straight into the zoo. The first obstacle you?ll face is the photographers, attempting to get more money out of you in the end; we declined as we all looked like utter crap due to the heat. We immediately found a little bit of shelter in the form of this huge gazebo situated in the main part of the zoo, we sat here for a while before going to look at the rest of the zoo. ...Gangs of New York, when i first started to watch this film i was struggling to get into it, but i am glad i stuck with it as its a great film, it is based in New York in 1846 where a battle is fought against the Irish and the native Americans over the five points area of New York City. The film is where Bill the Butcher played by Daniel Day Lewis kills Priest Vallon, whose son, Amsterdam Vallon Leonardo Dicaprio is taken to an orphanage. The plot then moves on 16 years to where Amsterdam returns to the five points to seek revenge against his fathers killer. Amsterdam then earns the gangster's respect, he must also contend with Jenny Everdean played by Cameron Diaz. The film is Directed by the great Martin Scorsese and this lives up to his other films.
