Il 2 settembre 1945, mentre New York festeggia la resa del Giappone, il giovane sassofonista Jimmy Doyle adocchia, tra la folla riunita nel salone di un grande albergo, una ragazza, Francine Evans, e dopo un assiduo corteggiamento, riesce a conquistarla. Francine è un'ottima cantante, per cui sia lei che Jimmy trovano un impiego prima in un night, poi in una orchestra sempre in giro per la provincia. Quando il direttore dell'orchestra si ritira, Jimmy, che intanto ha sposato Francine, ne prende il posto. Quando alla coppia nasce un figlio, i due, invece di sentirsi più uniti, vedono aggravarsi i contrasti dovuti ai caratteri, che già cominciavano a incrinare il loro rapporto. Da quel giorno, anche le loro carriere divergono: Francine è ormai una diva, non solo della canzone ma anche del cinema, mentre Jimmy ha un lungo periodo di oscurità e la allontana da sé. Rimasto solo però, Jimmy si riprende e diventa un idolo del "jazz". Dopo qualche tempo, i due si rivedono, forse si vogliono ancora bene: ma stavolta è Francine a respingere Jimmy per sempre. ... less

Martin Scorsese took a daring turn from the mean streets that made his reputation in the early 70s with New York, New York, his homage to the big-band era. And what a homage it is: the dazzling production design by Boris Leven continues to impress over the film's nearly three-hour length. And there's no denying the anthemic appeal of Kander and Ebb's title song, belted with winning bravado by costar Liza Minnelli in a show-stopping finale. But as valiantly as Minnelli and Robert De Niro try, they can't elevate the shaky plot beyond its two-dimensional construct. It purports to be a Star Is Born-like tragedy of colliding careers but too often it feels like inadvertently eavesdropping on a marriage counsellor's most truculent clients. (There are times you want someone--anyone--to slap Minnelli upside the head with a copy of Women WhoLove Too Much.) The film is for diehard Minnelli (or Scorsese) fans only. --Anne Hurley ... less

Hotel New York, Disneyland Paris
Advantages: clean, luxurious, location, characters
Disadvantages: cleaner stole but would have happened in any resort hotel
...When we came to be looking to book to go to Disneyland Paris we obviously had to spend a bit of time thinking about the accomodation that we wanted to stay in. Most of the people I knew had stayed in the Hotel Cheyenne which was one of the cheaper hotels on the resort but we decided that we wanted to stay closer to the Disney village and parks and so we decided to stay in the Hotel New York...

I love New York. Anybody that's read any of my previous opinions may have worked this one out by now but I fell in love with The Big Apple when I visited the unofficial capital of the world a few years ago. Of course, everyone associates NY with the hurly burly of a major metropolis with the pollution filled; graffiti riddled streets full of yellow cabs...
