...LA Fitness is located in the centre of the small town of Newbury in what used to be the cinema and competes with at least 3 other gyms in the area. COSTS My wife and I joined LA in January 2004 as they had an introductory monthly rate of just £18 and, importantly, no inflated "joining" fee which we saw as a bonus. Compared to other gyms this was really good value and we accepted that we would probably be compromising some of the facilities to get such a low price but were desperate to lose the "Christmas fat" that we had piled on. We also bought a padlock for the lockers at £5 each which didn't seem too expensive, and an introductory pack for £15 which included a water bottle (£1), a towel (£2.50), headphones (£3...

Newbury, A Bit More Than a Race-course

Advantages: A great day out for all the family

...My husband and I have been members of Newbury Race-course for many years now and as this is it's Centenary Year I thought a review was due. It is a super place to go not only for the racing but much more, as my review will reveal. A Little Bit of It's History The Newbury Racecourse Company was formed in 1904 and the construction of the racecourse buildings and stables cost £57,240 which equates to £3,275,000 at 2004 prices. The first meeting was held on 26th September 1905 and the first race was the Whatcombe Handicap worth £160, a lot different to the prize money of today, which is in the thousands. Newbury the great

Advantages: scenic
Disadvantages: none

...Newbury isn't quite a city admittedly, but it does deserve a write up. It not only boasts a wonderful race course, but a high street and shopping centre filled with national and local shops. near the high street is a river, where you can sit and have your lunch, while feeding the ducks (if you like). A selection of cafes locally (and information board) offer you everything you need for a nice summers afternoon. The shopping centre (under cover one), has a few shops, and is not one of the best, BUT is better than nopthing. The shopping street has a wide selection of stores, such as Tesco's, Wh Smith's etc. A visit is highly recommended!...

The Immaculate Collection!

Advantages: Lots of books and other facilities, lovely building, well located, nice staff

...As you can probably tell from the amount of book reviews I have been putting on Ciao as of late, I am most certainly a big fan of the library system we have in England. I think its terrible that library usage seems to be on the decline, and that a lot of people these days don't even have a library card. It's shocking, and unless we keep using resources such as our libraries, they won't be there for us anymore then we'll all realise what we're missing! Anyway back to my review lol. I live in Newbury, and we are lucky enough to have a lovely big library just outside the town centre and I decided to join both Harry and myself up as soon as we were settled in our first home. Signing up was an easy process; I just had to take along proof of my identity (my passport) and proof of my current address (bank statement, utility bill etc...

Where have they gone?

Advantages: I found a beautiful shop
Disadvantages: it was not called Kreate and Make

...On a visit to family in Newbury I searched on the internet to find a local craft shop in which to spend some time. I found a review for this shop called Kreate & Make and could not wait to visit such an amazing sounding place. Image my surprise and disappointment when I found that the shop no longer existed. In its place was a games workshop. Not a rubber stamp or 12x12 paper in sight!! All was not lost, though. The guy in the game shop pointed me in the direction of a fabric shop around the corner, in Inches Yard, called Calico. It is a gorgeous shop with some beautiful fabrics and wools - unfortunately not what I was after, but non-the-less wonderful - and the lady in there (I think her name was Sandra) pointed me in the direction of a fabulous shop, on the way toThatcham, called Flutterby Crafts (there is a website...

Good place to eat just off the A34

Advantages: Relaxed, village pub atmosphere and friendly natives
Disadvantages: Restaurant prices may appear a little high but the standard is high to match

...The Rampant Cat, in Woolton Hill, five minutes off the A34 near Newbury, may have a rather "modern" name but this conceals a rather good village pub, with real ale and real customers and a choice of bar food or restaurant. Under new management since 1998, it attracts "regulars" who walk from around the village plus the occasional visitor and some regulars from further afield. How to find it: Leave the A34 at the exit signed for Highclere and Wash Common, and turn right on the A343. After a mile turn right again into Woolton Hill, then right again after 400 yards, following the sign for Broad Layings. Follow this road for another 400 yards, look out for the village stores and post office on the left, and turn right at this point, when you will see the pub ahead of you....

Every Child's Fantasy!

Advantages: Plenty for all ages, good value for money, fun!

...Being a two year old, Harry seems to have endless energy and hates being stuck indoors all day, so I like to try to think of different things for us to do together during the weekdays, and things for us to do as a family when his dad has a few days off from work. My partner mentioned there was a big indoor playcentre just down the road from us and that it might be a great place for us to go with Harry too, and so off we went. It was literally 4 minutes away by car from where I live, so Harry and I also walk down there during the week, lovely! The place is called Fantasyworld. Fantasy World in Newbury is a large warehouse type space, which is filled with large play equipment suitable for babies through to 8-9 year old children. As you walk in, you have to give your name which is written in the entrance book and the time you arrived...

...Newbury Hilton Centre is situated just one mile south of the market town of Newbury in Berkshire, and is not a classic hotel in the form we are used to. For a start Newbury Hilton centre is only open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, the rest of the week is dedicated to businesses. Needless to say we stayed for three nights from Thursday.
