Review of Bear Feet Playcentre, Newton Abbot

♫ A great deal happening ♫

Advantages: there is more to do and its closer to the mainland England
Disadvantages: not as well organised as the store at Liskeard

...and ignore the metric ruling. The two stores in Newton Abbot, Devon and Falmouth, Cornwall were opened shortly after. The stores are now owned by local businessman Bruce Robertson son of Mike Robertson. Their connection to anti-EU policies has resulted in 'alleged attacks' on the stores. In 2004 the store went up in flames and has now been completely rebuilt. In the beginning the fire was linked to arson possibly due to the extreme beliefs of Mike and Bruce Robertson, but was later ruled out as an electrical fault. Still it has resulted in the comical nickname 'Trago Grills'. THE STORE ------------------ The store at Newton Abbot is situated in 100 acres of the South Devon countryside. The Trago Mills store at Newton Abbot is slightly larger than the two stores in Cornwall. It is relatively easy to get to and is situated between Liverton...

Review of Trago Mills (Newton Abbot)

Trago Mills, not a success story?

Advantages: See text.
Disadvantages: See text.

...This review is on Trago Mills, a family themem park with shopping centre based in Devon just outside a town called Newton Abbot. This site is one out of three Trago Mills sites, the other two being in Cornwall (one at Liskeard theh other at Falmouth). In order to find this particular one, you will find it on the A38 between Plymouth and Exeter. Or rather, closer to Exeter but still on that exact same road! Look for sings to Newton Abbot, although just to confuse you all more which I know you like - there are in fact two junctions for this town. If coming from Exeter way, then it will be the first turning - of course, from Plymouth it will be the second. But never fear, as Trago is well signposted from both ways. On entering the site, there is plenty of car parking. But as this is a popular place to come to, then no doubt it will...

Something different to look around (House of Marbles)

Advantages: Free to get into. Good to visit if you have a couple hours spare
Disadvantages: Will not fill a whole day

...My dad recently told us about The House of Marbles as he had been to see it with relatives; he loved it so much he wanted to take us to see it so at the weekend we went with him to take a look around. The House of Marbles is very easy to find its in Devon between Plymouth and Exeter on the A38, just off the Drumbridges roundabout (Trago Mills roundabout) towards Bovey Tracey, it has the usual brown tourist attraction signs to follow so you cant miss it. The House of Marbles was not at all what I was expecting; I kind of had it in my head that if my dad enjoyed it then it would be boring for younger people and I'm pleased to say that I was wrong and I'm very glad he took us there. So what is The House of Marble, well it's a working glass and games factory which is based in an old pottery. Firstly you have the glass blowing part where...

Riviera Bay Holiday Park, Brixham, Devon

Advantages: Active pensioners and seagulls will love it
Disadvantages: No help if you're disabled

...hundred yards from the entertainment complex. Most nights as we lay there trying to get to sleep, we had to endure the rowdy sounds coming from the nightclub, which went on until after midnight. This would then be accompanied by the drunken sounds of people tottering out of the club and walking directly past our window, laughing and singing noisily. Too bad if you wanted an early night, especially as we weren't getting much sleep on the uncomfortable beds. We've stayed at several caravan parks in Devon over the years, and have also stayed at the sister sites owned by the same company that runs Riviera Bay. We've never had complaints before about any of them. But the basic accommodation on this site can't be recommended. Most of the people staying in the cheaper chalets were elderly, perhaps because these are a cheap option if you have to...

Appledore - a jewel in the Devon crown

Advantages: Friendly people, lovely views, quaint cottages, summers
Disadvantages: Bit of a ghost village in the winter

...I can hear you all saying 'Appledore? Never heard of it.' Well, neither had I until just over 5 years ago. How I came here. My family have always favoured North Devon and Cornwall for UK holidays and we had all spent many happy weeks in these areas relaxing and wishing that we didn't have to go back to our humdrum daily lives. Like many we'd trawled the local papers whilst on holiday, checking out the job and housing situation, and like most we'd return home with regret and dream of our next holiday. Well, everything changed for the whole family within the short space of 18 months. In that little time slot my husband, both my parents and my grandmother died leaving only my brother's family and my family to carry on. It was a devastating time for all of us and one which made my brother and myself take stock of our lives...

Saltram House, Devon.

Advantages: Lovely parkland and gardens, house.
Disadvantages: None.

...I live fairly close to Saltram House which is a property owned by the National Trust. It is great being so near as it is possible to visit fairly frequently for a short period, or spend longer depending on mood. The house is impressive, the gardens are beautiful and there are lots of walks around the grounds. Location Saltram is situated in Plympton which is in Devon. It is high above the River Plym, surrounded by woodland. The address is Saltram, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon, PL7 1UH. I would use a route planner if unfamiliar with the area as it is not on a main route. It is not far from Plymouth itself though being just on the outskirts, it is 3 and a half miles East of Plymouth City Centre. The entrance is in Plympton and there are brown National Trust signs as a guide and the entrance has magnificent pillars. Parking...

Newton Faulkner's debut album is a success

Advantages: Great voice and lyrics
Disadvantages: Not a great deal of variety, though I'm sure that will come

...Hand Built By Robots is Newton Faulkner's debut album. He smashed onto the commercial music scene in 2007 with his hit Dream Catch Me, and the album was just as successful. He is one of a breed of singer songwriters we have seen emerge over the past five years or so inculding James Blunt, James Morrison and Paolo Nutini that seem to have the edge when it comes to writing music. If you've heard Faulkner's music, then you'll know he is a balladier, with his husky and powerful voice and his loing ginger dreadlocks making him instantly recognisable. The album doesn;t have a lot of variety about it, I have to say, but that does not mean that he is a one-trick pony. Faulkner's music is high in quality. The predominant sounds on the album are his guitar and voice, but the backing music lends itself well to the music, and it is obviously...

South Devon Railway

Advantages: Nostalgic look back in time.Wonderful scenery, friendly Staff, Clean Trains.
Disadvantages: Short journey.

...We visited South Devon Railway for a day trip to Totnes on the steam train. Admission Prices: Return trip (single fares also available) Buckfastleigh - Totnes Littlehempston Adult £9.90 Senior Citizen £9.20 Child £5.90 (5 years - 14 years; under 5s FREE) Family £28.90 (two adults and two children) There is also FREE parking at Buckfastleigh for cars and coaches. We travelled from Totnes to Buckfastleigh to Totnes and it was just like going back in time. It was a thorougly enjoyable ride on a proper steam train. Taking in the wonderful scenery from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. We went in the summer and it was a fantastic journey beside the river Dart t. The trains are clean and comfortable, in my opinion much better than the trains of today. The children enjoyed the ride and the ability to get up and move...
