Ongiara - Niagara. Thunder of Waters.
Advantages: Fun holiday resort with exceptional Waterfalls
Disadvantages: Can get extremely busy in summer months
...As some of you will know last year I was fortunate to holiday in Canada, staying with friends who live and work in Toronto and with two fantastic people as tour guides I had a holiday of a lifetime. One of the highlights of my holiday was my three-day visit to Niagara Falls more precisely the Niagara Region. Both my friends knew the region well considering both had relatives in the area and had visited the Falls many, many times before, so who better to show me the splendours of the resort. Niagara Falls has a multitude of attractions, sights and events, far too many to record here but I shall endeavour to recount some of those places I visited and those attractions I experienced with a little history and fact thrown in for good measure.
LOCATION
The Falls themselves are only the centre of a fascinating region in southern Ontario...

A Tale of Two Niagaras
Advantages: An unforgettable experience
Disadvantages: You'll get wet!
...Last November I was lucky enough to take a short break in Canada. We visited Toronto first
and stayed for four days - just long enough to see the city and do plenty of pre-Christmas shopping. Very nice it was too.
One of the things that we just had to do while we were there was to take a trip to Niagara Falls. The Falls are about 85 miles outside Toronto. You can hire a car and drive there easily from the city or if you prefer there are numerous organised tours that you can take. There?s also quite a good bus service or you can take the train from Union Street station in downtown Toronto.
I?m a bit of an old romantic when it comes to train travel abroad - I have visions of sitting in old-world elegance watching the world pass gently by the window. So, no contest - we would let the train take the strain and get to see some...

Niagara Falls awesome
Advantages: breathtaking falls
Disadvantages: Clifton Hill area
...Niagara Falls is one of the most awe-inspiring sights that I have ever seen. Before you can see the falls you can hear the thunder of the water cascading over the edge. We were there in June 2000 and found the place to be one of contrasts. The Niagara Parkway which runs alongside the Falls and on north to Niagara on the Lake is undoubtedly one of the nicest stretches of road that I have ever travelled along. The area immediately next to the Falls is quite scenic with well manicured gardens and floral displays but only one block west at the Clifton Hill area you have what can only be described as tourist trash- a combination of hideous neon displays advertising Ripley’s’ believe it or not’ and Madame Tussauds etc - it is totally out of sync with the raw, natural beauty of the Falls and surrounding area to the north...

Niagara for the first time
Advantages: Great place of beauty
Disadvantages: Everyone knows that!
...Yes, the 'Thundering Water' that is Niagara falls was my holiday destination for 3 weeks in August. I'd never been before and can say that I will definately be there again.
Niagara Falls is the ultimate beauty of Canada and it is such an amazing natural sight that I am hopefully going to emigrate there in a few years with my fiance.
In the month of August the weather is warm and the tourist season is almost over, that is the time you want to be there, although there is never really a shortage of life around such a spectacular area.
When you see the Falls for the first time it wont be like you imagined, it will be 100 times better. The sound of the water flowing over the horseshoe falls is exciting as well as calming. Its corny to say, but you really do feel at peace and can easily stand for ages just watching the gleaming...

Review on Niagara Falls in the 'fall'
Advantages: Cheap and cheerful accommodation and food if you look for it
Disadvantages: long flight and Japanese tourists
...Heading down the Queen Elizabeth Highway from Toronto to Niagara Falls the first indication you get is the sound of the falls.
If you have never physically been close to Niagara the sound hits you before the sight.
Driving down you start to get a glimpse of the American Rainbow falls. WOW. This awesome sight is truly breathtaking till you round the corner and see the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
Nothing can prepare you for this. Okay you have read about them, seen them on television or in files but the sheer size and volume takes your breath away.
Wander around keeping away from the wet ground if you do not want sprayed. Join the throngs of tourists leaning over taking photo after photo.
But take time to visit the parks and other attractions on offer.
There is a gaudy Blackpool style street which has fairground attractions...

Watch That Wiggle!
Advantages: Marilyn Monroe, good drama/thriller, stunning locations
Disadvantages: Some scenes seem a bit long
...Continuing my viewing of Marilyn Monroe films, this morning I settled down to a 1953 movie - Niagara. Not one of her best known, but one that well illustrates Marilyn's talents. I have seen this before, years ago, but I can't remember much of the plot. I can vividly recall Marilyn though - how beautiful she looked in her red dress and shots of her singing prettily.
1953 was another busy year for Monroe, with starring roles in three high quality films - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (with Jane Russell), How To Marry A Millionaire (with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable) and Niagara.
Niagara is filmed around the spectacular, panoramic views of the Niagara Falls. This is a very visual film with plenty to delight the eyes, enhanced by the use of Technicolor. The stunning location is displayed in vibrant colours and all the action is set around...

Poor Niagara!
Advantages: Stunning, dramatic - possibly the most impressive waterfalls in the world.
Disadvantages: Expensive to reach.
...?Poor Niagara!?
So remarked Eleanor Roosevelt upon seeing the Iguazú Falls for the first time; it is this sense of immediate and lasting awe that best defines 250+ waterfalls that together form the blanket of crashing water separating Brazil and Argentina. Second though it may be to Victoria Falls in statistics of size and volume, in more subjective terms of comparison, there can be few other natural sites with such impact and inherent raw beauty.

Reaching the Falls
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Around two hours? flight north of Buenos Aires and west of Rio, the Falls lie just to the south-east of the Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay border. Although technically three towns, Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazú and Ciudad del Este form one large urban sprawl around the confluence of the Parana and Iguazú...

The Best Part of Niagara (and it's not the Falls)
Advantages: Wineries, Victorian style small town
Disadvantages: Most things closed in winter
...Niagara Falls is one of those places that everyone 'needs' to visit when they are in the Toronto area. And while the Falls are interesting for first-timers, and the Casino seems to pack 'em in at night, the whole place just feels like a small Blackpool. A few hours is plenty to see all that is worthwhile in the Falls area. The real gem is a few miles down the road, a town called Niagara-On-The-Lake. The town has always had a Victorian feel to it, especially of late as more money is pumped into its development as a tourist area. It has strived to keep the 'small-town' image and feel, and it does it well. My favourite part of the town is the vineyards. The Niagara area makes the best wine in Canada, and has won many worldwide awards for its achievements. The wine-tour is a self-guided driving (go-figure!) or biking tour. It stops...

Will Get Wet...May Get Soaked
Advantages: Lots of different attractions
Disadvantages: A bit downmarket in places
...Niagara has long been on my 'to do' list, so I was happy for my departure from Mexico to coincide with a stop-over in Toronto and, thus, a trip to the falls. I was lucky to be taken there by a friend I made on my Christmas tour of Costa Rica. As Toronto residents for about 6 years, she and her mother had been there before, but not for some time, and were happy to return.
I had originally planned to take a one-day guided tour from Toronto, which would have cost about $70 and involved an early-ish departure. We left a little later, just after 9am, and this was a good choice since we missed most of the commuter traffic. The drive from the city is quite long - over 2 hours - and the scenery is nothing really special, but that didn't matter. I was just excited to be off to see the falls at long last. As we approached all the usual...

A spectacular natural wonder
Advantages: Spectacular, lots of things to do
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
...I visited here on my recent trip to Canada back in October and part of me thought "it's just a big waterfall, how exciting can it be"? When I got there though that former thought was turned on its head. Although this was not the main part of my trip, since I had to fly into Toronto and I was so close I could not resist extending my holiday for a day trip to here from Toronto.
At Niagara, there are three distinct sets of waterfalls spanning Canada + the US (the Horseshoe Falls, named because of their shape) and mainland US with Goat Island, a small island separated from mainland USA by the American and Bridal Veil falls. The last two sets mentioned are what is visible in the picture above, along with the 'Maid of the Mist' boat. This review is a detailed account of my day here, visiting both the American and Canadian sides.
