Frost versus Nixon
Advantages: Interesting film, great drama, great acting from main characters
Disadvantages: May not appeal to everyone if you prefer more action in your films
...Frost/Nixon is a film about the television interviews that David Frost carried out with the former American President Richard Nixon and centred around the Watergate scandal. They happened in 1977 when I was just a baby so although I had heard about Watergate I couldn't really have told you anything about it and I certainly didn't know that David Frost had interviewed Nixon about it. My husband however had heard about the film and was keen to watch it so I sat down not sure what to expect.
Michael Sheen plays David Frost a successful talk show host who sees his chance to make it big in America by getting the biggest scoop and interviewing Nixon. Nixon agrees to the interview providing Frost can come up with the large fee. Frost has to try to convince the TV networks to pay for the interviews or he will have to find the money elsewhere...

A Touch of Frost!
Advantages: Tasty, subtle and easy to drink.
Disadvantages: Limited availability.
...For the second in my reviews of this year?s winter beers I am writing about a fruit beer. Fuller?s Jack Frost is a seasonal beer available for a limited period in bottles and as a Cask Ale ~ I am reviewing the Cask version.
~~~THE BREWERY.
According to the Fuller?s website they are the oldest working brewery in London. It is true to say that there HAS been brewing on the site of the old Griffin Brewery in Chiswick for over 350 years. The company we know today was joined by John Fuller in 1829 and took on its present name in 1845 ~ Fuller, Smith & Turner PLC (this was John Bird Fuller, Henry Smith and John Turner). The descendants of the founding families are still involved in the company today and Fullers are continuing to use traditional methods and recipes to produce award winning beers.
Fuller?s beers are available...
THIS REVIEW WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!
Advantages: Funny yet practical; the brilliant Nick Frost
Disadvantages: The Zombie special is a bit of a let down
...Back in 2002, Channel 5 showed a comedy series called ?Danger! 50,000 Volts?, presented by this fairly little-known guy called Nick Frost. I remember watching it; it was quite funny, especially considering it was on Channel 5. It was even moderately successful - attracting over a million viewers at its peak. But I thought little of it.
However, after Shaun of the Dead, and more recently Hot Fuzz and my belated discovering of his sitcom, Spaced, Nick Frost came back to my attention. Luckily, his new found fame meant that his TV show was released in a two disc set, complete with a special thirty minute episode entitled ?Danger! 50,000 Zombies?. No prizes for guessing who pops up in this as Frost?s co-star.
Anyway, before we get on to that, let?s take a look at the programme itself. Over 8 half hour episodes, Nick Frost takes...
Frost/Nixon - an electrifying historical drama
Advantages: Superb performances and very engaging
Disadvantages: Some wandering accents!
...WHAT IS IT:
Frost/Nixon is a 2008 film based on the real-life set of interviews between David Frost and President Richard Nixon which occurred in 1977. The film was directed by Ron Howard and based on a play by Peter Morgan. It is a tense political drama which uses real footage, reconstructions of classic footage and mock interviews with key players to create the historical context for this infamous meeting.
FROST:
The film shows David Frost as a playboy TV presenter who, after some success in England and a less than successful period in America, is now presenting 'wacky' TV shows in Australia but is still desperate to have another crack at breaking America. He sees his chance when a he catches a clip of Nixon on the news and persuades producer and friend John Birt that he can get the truth about the Watergate scandal out of him if he...
Frost/ Nixon
Advantages: Brilliant performance by Sheen and great story
Disadvantages: Rambles a bit in the middle
...I went into this film not knowing much of the background to the Watergate scandal or indeed any of what had happened as it happened around the time I was born. I have always been intrigued by history though and went along to see what all the fuss was about. The story centres around an epic battle between David Frost, the up and coming television star and Richard M Nixon, the disgraced 37th president.
I must first of all confess that one big draw of this film was the inclusion of Michael Sheen, who has been excellent as Tony Blair in The Queen and Kenneth Williams in Fantabulosa. The man is an absolute genius and can switch from famous person to famous person in the blink of an eye. I was concerned that all we would be able to see was Tony Blair but his vocal impression especially in the television parts is simply outstanding. If you...
Time for Merry's lick of Frost
Advantages: Enjoyable story line.
Disadvantages: Some chapters can drag on
...of the books. I especially like the interaction between Doyle Merry and Frost my favorite characters of the series. There were some unexpected twists which kept me wanting to read more. When I read books I tend to only read a couple of chapters a day, but I was enjoying the book so much that I finished it really quickly. The only thing that annoyed me about the book is that it has the first chapter of the next book inside it. I mean this is ok if you have the next book but if like me you don't have it then you have to wait. All in all I give this book a 9/10, very enjoyable.
The Book
The story is 431 pages long in the small paperback version. The books are available in most book stores and websites prices start at £5.25 - £14.99 depending on what type of book you decide to get. It also has different front covers.
The next book...
FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included,new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...
A touch of Frost series 1
Advantages: British crime drama at its very best, some great acting
Disadvantages: The box set is much cheaper now than when I bought it!
...much more pleasant in the TV series than he is in the books even though that does not necessarily mean he is a loveable character. The episodes are generally 1,5 hours and free standing although many of the characters that are introduced in one episode will pop up in later episodes. In every episode, as in the books, Frost juggles multiple cases. David Jason plays the scruffy Jack Frost fantastically well and I doubt anyone else could play this fairly complex character quite as well. Other actors that appear frequently are Bruce Alexander as Superintendent Mullett, Matt Bardock as D.C. Barnard and Caroline Harker as W.P.C Wallace.
Okay, now that that is cleared up I will move on to the actual DVD.
The first series box set includes 2 DVD cases, the first one containing 2 DVDs the second one just the 1. There are no special features...
A Touch of Frost
Advantages: Very entertaining, superb acting
Disadvantages: Repeats, and one of many police shows
...I love this programme! There are repeats being shown at the moment, and although I probably watched most of them the first time round I'm watching them again - and thoroughly enjoying them again! David Jason never ceases to amaze me - whatever role he takes on he plays to perfection. No one will ever forget the hilarious Delboy, perhaps this is a bad thing if you expect any of Delboy's traits to appear in other characters! He was brilliant as the voice of Danger Mouse (correct me if I'm wrong) and Count Duckula! But he is fantastic as Jack Frost - the aging but still spot-on Detective Inspector of Denton CID. There is the serious side to the programme with the crimes he is investigating, and solving, but he is also a very humorous character. He's staying in police 'halls' and keeps pinching everyone's food from the fridge...
GIRLY FROSTING
Advantages: Pretty Sheen
Disadvantages: Chip Prone
...I don't normally wear a lot of make-up or nail polish so when I invest in a bottle of pretty nail colour, I make sure it is something I'll put on at least twice!
One of my really girly friends loves nail varnish and must have at least 50 bottles of every colour imaginable. The other day we were going through a last minute check list for her wedding and the colour of nail varnish came up. What should she wear and what should the bridesmaids wear?
We wanted something sheer and subtle for us girls so that her hands would glow (she opted for a french manicure). The answer... MAC Frost. It is actually intended as a top coat to add a glittery sheen on the surface of the main colour, but we loved it so much that we decided that was all we needed.
It takes about three coats to achieve the pearly shine we wanted but it was worth it...
