Baxters beckons
Advantages: inexpensive, simple, last for ages
Disadvantages: none for me
...There is one cupboard in my kitchen that is full to the brim of cans. Tuna, tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn, soups and more. When it comes the the end of the week (especially as I begin to run low on funds nearing payday) and I'm trying to stretch what's in the kitchen to avoid spending money at the shops this cupboard is where I try to make a meal out of. Most of the time it is quite hard to even see what's in there! Most of the time I end up raiding the freezer before searching the long-lasting food cupboard.
One thing always available in there is plain tomato soup. To be honest I have never been overly bothered by brand when it came to restocking and just when with the first one I came across. I like another soup in the Baxters range and thus more recently bought the cream of tomato soup.
On a crazy night last week we got home relatively...

Baxters chutney - like pickled jam
Advantages: Tasty, sweet, vegan, easy on the digestion
Disadvantages: Not too chunky
...Baxters tomato chutney is a sweet and not particularly sharp chutney that is good for people who find pickled relishes either too vinegary or too harsh on the digestion. I came across it recently when I was in the supermarket looking for a sandwich pickle. Usually I go for brown pickles like Branston, but this was on special offer for £1.59 for a 312g jar, so I thought I'd try it.
The jar has a pretty upmarket feel to it in, a bit like home made chutneys that you can buy at farmers' markets. I found it was pretty easy to open, but the lid is quite small, so would be very difficult for someone with arthritis or other mobility or grip problems. Once opened, the content of the jar smells quite sweet and slightly fruity. It looks rather like a bright red jam.
As this is a chutney rather than a pickle, the main ingredient is sugar rather...

Baxters beetroot - quality assured!
Advantages: Good fresh beetroot without all the hassle of cooking it yourself.
Disadvantages: Juice can stain
...Beetroot is one of the vegetables that is very easy to grow but takes time to cook and because of its vivid colour can stain fingers, work tops and clothes. I therefore tend to by it from the supermarket in jars.
Baxters have been making quality beetroot since 1920s. The beetroot is hand picked to ensure freshness and quality and I can say I have never been disappointed with the quality of this product. The benefits of beetroot has been advertised recently and I believe it contains betaine, a substance that is supposed to relax the mind and is used sometimes to treat depression.
Ingredients:
Beetroot
Malt vinegar from barley
Acetic acid
Salt
Sugar
Sweetener - saccharin
The product is available in glass jars with a screw on/off lid in gold. It comes in two sizes 340g for 81p and 567g for £1.45 and is available in most supermarkets...

Thumbs up for Baxters
Advantages: Tastes good. Big chunks of potatoes. Filling
Disadvantages: None
...You know the sort of soup that Gran makes? The kind that she'll give you in the winter months with thick bits of potato and stuff in it? Well, I didn't ever think that buying a soup in a tin would ever remind me of Gran's soup and/or broth. I have, however, come across such a soup.
The soup I'm talking about is Baxter's Potato and Leek soup. Let me just say, I'm surprised nobody has written an op on this - until now! So, I'll do my very best to tell you all about it.
The Baxter's soup has been around for over 100 years now, first thought of by a man named George Baxter. On the back of the tins you will see a short paragraph telling you about the soups with the signature Audrey Baxter on the back. She is the great grandaughter of George.
Baxter's do a number of different kinds of wonderful and tasty soups...

You cannot beet a Baxter
Advantages: Very versatile
Disadvantages: Can be messy
...Dear Mr Baxter,
I am writing to thank you for opening your business in 1868. This was in Scotland too, the land of my maternal Grandmother I wonder if you ever met her family. I do know that you were a gardener at Gordon's Castle and what a coincidence my great, great grandfather was also a market gardener.
So they I should imagine also knew how to prepare a raw beetroot, by chopping the tops and tails off, not damaging the skin and washing it carefully. I know my grandmother used to boil her beetroots; they probably took too long to cook in her kitchen range. Today we can wrap them in tin foil and put them in the oven or even put them in water and cook them in a microwave. All new inventions for you Mr Baxter your descendents probably know about these methods.
I have always enjoyed beetroot in vinegar...

It's winter? Must be time for some soup reviews
Advantages: Vegan
Disadvantages: Salty, expensive
...One line summary of the product in case you don't want to read any further: Baxters minestrone soup is a vegetable and pasta soup in a tin.
Before I started trying to avoid dairy foods, I would never have bought this minestrone soup - at about £1 a tin, I figured I may as well buy fresh soups if I wanted to spend that much money and didn't have time to make my own. But, since vegetarian non-creamed soups were few and far between at my local supermarket, and it was on special offer of 3 tins for £2, I figured I would give it a go.
The packaging
Baxters are a fairly upmarket soup company, which is reflected in the packaging and the price of their products. The tins are the convenient sort which has the ring pull at the top, which means you don't need a tin opener. So, top marks for convenience. The serving suggestion looks very...

Knickerless in Bruges!
Advantages: A good small and friendly hotel with excellent service. Great location too!
Disadvantages: Steep (very) stairs to bedrooms.
...During our recent trip to Belgium we stayed in Bruges. We had never stayed there before and, when planning the trip, didn?t know any hotels to base our decision on which to pick on. Our group was quite large (there were to be 17 of us in total) so we needed a decent sized place, but not in a huge and impersonal hotel. We also wanted to be well located in the centre of Bruges, but not too far away from the railway station (or at least easy to get to by public transport). So the criteria was small(ish), friendly, clean, good location, decent breakfast, good transport links and not too expensive. Were we asking too much? Our trip organiser (who was also in charge of transport) had a scout around and came up with the Hotel Nicolas.
~~~WHERE IS IT?
The Hotel Nicolas can be found at 9 Niklaas Desparsstraat in the centre of Bruges...
