Nikon D40x
Advantages: Quality Pictures, Easy to use, Compact
Disadvantages: Price but still worth it for a decent camera
...the Nikon D40x it had everything we wanted including a sport mode which was the main feature I wanted, as border collies don't keep still for very long!
Me knowing absolutely nothing about digital SLR cameras was just happy to have a cool new camera get it home and try it out.
** The Nikon D40x Features **
*Auto-Focus
Just like the previous model (D40) this camera has an auto focus feature all though it does not have a built in focus drive motor, so only works with lenses that have their own built in drive motor, suitable lenses for this feature are AF-S and AF-I lenses.
The auto focus is brilliant for fast moving dogs and cars and anything else that moves so you can get pictures quickly, features of the auto focus include?
Three area TTL phase detection, Nikon Multi-CAM530 auto focus module
Detection range: EV -1 to +19

Nikon D40x DSLR
Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality.
Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken
...My review is about the Nikon D40x Digital Single Lense Reflex camera.
For the last 3 years i've been taking photographs using my dad Konika Minolta Dynax 5D, but as of a few months ago i've moved
in with my other half and no longer have access to my dads camera, so before christmas it was decided that we needed our own digital SLR.
I'd got a couple of models in mind, the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40, they both did what I wanted of them and were around the right price.
Having researched them on the internet and finding somewhere to go look at them off we went to Jessops in town to have a look at them.
I asked the assistant if I could look at and have a play with both and thats when I spotted the Nikon D40x, it hadn't come up in my searches on the internet and turned out that it was a better version of the D40 and had...

Nikon D40x
Advantages: Small, feature packed, easy to use, Built in Help system, auto and scene modes
Disadvantages: only three AF points, manual not so good
...we can see the result straight away.
I should say that I am not a professional photographer, more an amateur who wanted to get his hands on a Digital SLR and see what he could do. So this review will be from an average joe.
I was originally going to purchase a Pentax K100d as it was the cheapest DSLR around and with anti shake, even though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon.
I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end I think I would have had to upgrade the 6MP Pentax...

NIKON D40X- An amazing piece of technology!
Advantages: Incredible quality, infininate features, decent price
Disadvantages: not as easy to transport as a compact.
...The Nikon D40x is a must have for all budding photographers! My favourite hobby is photography and I am also a digital media student, and therefore the photography equipment I buy is very important to me.
I have owned this product now for ten months and I never leave home without it! Nikky, as she is know to me (sad I know!), goes everywhere with me, shooting many different scenes.
The Nikon D40x is a digital SLR camera, therefore using the old fashioned use of lenses, but produces incredible results compared to normal digital cameras...i.e compact digital cameras.
The Nikon D40x comes with a rechargeable battery, which simply slots into the supplied charger and charges by the main. They also come with a neck strap, to avoid the fear of dropping.
The main disadvantage that some people may find with this product is the size...

Nikon D40X
Advantages: Light, over 10mp, takes SD cards
Disadvantages: Limited lens choice.
...retailers that will only let you have the body and one lens for this much.
My only complaint is the lack of choice as far as lenses are concerned.
Basically to get full functionality with this camera you have to use the Nikon DX range which at present is fairly limited / expensive. Sigma do some lenses in the HSM range which will also do the trick. Older Nikon / Nikkor lenses can be used but you will loose the auto focus and on some lenses you will also loose the onboard metering facility.
In general I am pretty pleased with the D40x....

D40x
Advantages: Excellent image quality and build
Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses
...An excellent all round camera that will see a complete beginner through to skilled enthusiast.
Build quality is excellent for the price, as you'd expect from a Nikon. The buttons are well set out, and the camera feels like a professional model. Compared to more expensive DSLRs it is very small. This is because it does not have an external battery and does not include a sensor motor.
Because of the lack of motor, the camera only takes Nikon AF-S lenses, which have a motor built in. The standard lens is an excellent starting point, but if you want to expand your collection a sensible choice would be the Nikon AF-S 55-200 VR lens, which will allow you to zoom in more on your subject.
The 10MP sensor coupled with a high quality lens ensures great photo quality. The camera offers 10 modes. A beginner should start with the Auto mode...

best camera under £500
Advantages: fantastic value for money
Disadvantages: some older lenses will not auto focus
...As a newcomer to digital slrs and slrs altogether i have spent hours trying to decide which camera to buy. i narrowed it down to 2 choices, the nikon d40x and the canon 400d.
these are both brilliant cameras for their price but the nikon performs slightly better in my opinion and is about £30 cheaper. if you are comparing this to the earlier d40 i would highly recommend paying the extra money for this as the extra 4 mega pixels will be vital if you are planning on enlarging your photos to anything bigger than a3.
the optical quality of the 18-55mm kit lens is outstanding compared to the 18-55mm lens that comes with the canon which produces slightly soft images when enlarged to bigger than a4.
Features of this camera include ISO range 100-1600 (extendable to 3200) 4,000 shutter speed etc. all of this info is displayed...

A lovely SLR - Great Quality
Advantages: Clear, crisp photos, easy to use, good battery life, can use old film lenses
Disadvantages: Bulkier than a compact
...I bought it 5 years ago, but the picture quality does not compare. It is so nice to have the SLR and really zoom in to items that I want to take. It has taken some fantastic shots of my dog, which really would not sit still! Weight and Size wise of course the Compact Camera wins hands down but that not why you buy a SLR. However this D40X is easy to carry around and not to bulky. The LCD screen is of a good size and you can very clearly see your photo and zoom in. There is also an editing feature where you can edit your photos while they are still on your camera, which includes cropping.
The lens that the Camera comes with is superb and I?ve also tried my boyfriends Old Lens for his Film Nikon SLR and they fit also (but don?t automatic focus). What a great way of using old camera lens?s that you may have.
The battery life is...

Nikon D90 - My Next 'Last' Camera
Advantages: Movies, LiveView, 12.3 mpixels, build quality, excellent lens range
Disadvantages: Still quite bulky for casual use. Expensive if that's all you want it for
..., although it?s noticeably slower if using LiveView, which also seems to take ages coming into focus.
Lens Conversion Factor ? 1.5. This means that anyone used to the terminology of 35mm film-camera lenses will have to rethink the power of their existing lens collection. Under the old rule of thumb that a 50 mm focal length equalled 1 magnification, in digital days, it now represents 1.5 magnifications. This is because lenses don?t change, but the sensor of the D90 (and most other DSLRs) is about 66% the size of a 35 mm film negative (that?s about the same size as an APS negative ? remember them?). Hence my Nikkor 100 mm to 300 mm zoom is about 3 - 9 magnification (a power which would have needed a 150mm to 450 mm lens in ?celluloid days?)
Note: All Nikon lenses ?fit?, even the lenses from my 1970s Nikon F, but don?t expect an old lens like this...

My experience of the Nikon D90 as an amateur photographer.
Advantages: Excellent picture quality, lots of useful features, well designed controls, great kit lens
Disadvantages: More expensive than some other DSLRs, quite big and heavy, limited movie mode
...charge and lasted for weeks! Even when I use the screen and flash a lot, it only used half the battery after taking around 800 pictures on 2 week holiday.
Lenses
I would definitely recommend the 18-105 kit lens you can get with the D90. It has the VR vibration reduction feature, a speedy auto-focus motor and good image quality and a long enough zoom for all your everyday shots (much better than the 18 -55 lens that comes with other D models like the D5000). I also have a 70 - 300mm zooms lens for basic wildlife shots, which I bought on ebay for around £80. The D90 has the advantage on an inbuilt auto-focus motor, not found in the smaller bodied D40, D60 and D5000. This means that all Nikon lens can be used, rather than just the newer AF lenses.
Disadvantages
The only disadvantage I can think of aside from the price tag, is...
