Nikon D90 - My Next 'Last' Camera

Review of Nikon D90

Brilliant camera for the money well worth it very versatile

Advantages: large resolution, great photos, easy to use, great battery life, great fun!
Disadvantages: obviously its not a £2000 plus camera

...I bought this camera June 5th 2009, it cost me close to £900 but so far has been worth every penny!. im sure if you have got to the point of reading this review you are well aware of the specs if not thats the best place to start. while looking for a DSLR I looked at this and the 2 other price range competitors the Canon EOS 500D and the other Nikon D5000. this was a very hard choice I found that while playing around with all 3 in shops the D90 had the best video, and more vibrant pictures than the Canon. but that still left me with the two nikons the only thing that separated them in my books was the screens the larger screen on this D90 or the smaller lower resolution on the D5000. and as i like to take lots of photos and look at them i went for the D90. I have never looked back. I use the Camera for taking the normal photos holiday...

Review of Nikon D90

My experience of the Nikon D90 as an amateur photographer.

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, lots of useful features, well designed controls, great kit lens
Disadvantages: More expensive than some other DSLRs, quite big and heavy, limited movie mode

... How I made my choice I recently bought the D90 to upgrade from my Olympus 560UZ bridge camera, so this is my first foray into DSLR photography. Most people starting in DSLR photography will opt for the cheaper D40, or the D60, D70 and D80. I am not particularly rich, and in the end chose the D90 because I didn't want to grow out of the smaller DSLR and have to buy a new body quickly. I have found that the prices of Nikon DSLRs haven't decreased significantly over the last 3 years, so I decided (maybe wrongly) that this option would save me money in the long run. I found that it is very important to go into a shop and hold the camera in your hands before making a choice. All the photography shop assistants said that the Canon series was just as good as the Nikons, but I discounted them because I didn't get on with the feel...

Nikon D40 SLR Camera

Advantages: A superb camera
Disadvantages: None

...! The camera is compact and a very reasonable weight compared to most of its competitors. It offers a full range of shooting modes and various combinations of auto/manual. It took me a while to get competent enough to start using it to anywhere near its full capabilities. My previous camera was also 6mp and produced excellent photos, the photos produced by the D40 are amazingly better ! Whether this is due to better processing or having a "proper" lens I don't know, but the difference is stunning. I was a bit concerned about battery life on a relatively large camera like this, but the Nikon battery just goes on for ever, despite having to power the electronics, the mirror, shutter, a large screen and the auto focus motor. ...This is my first ever SLR digital camera and i love it! I would recommend to anyone who enjoys photography or not. Its a good hold, perfect picture quality and its perfect for the price. You can buy some SLR cameras which are expensive, but you could gain alot more from just buying a Nikon D40! Has a good clear colour LCD screen, powerful flash, easy to access memory and battery, comes supplied with everything you need to start you off. I've been told that Canon are good makes, but to be honest, the picture quality i think is so much better on this camera, plus this camera is only a 6 megapixels, so am guessing the Nikon D40x which is a 10 megapixel camera, is proberbly the best camera around at the moment! I would buy any Nikon camera again, no dout....

Nikon D40 is the DSLR you'll ever need

Advantages: Excellent image quality, good core functionality of an DSLR, cheap, portable and lightweight.
Disadvantages: Megapixels may not be sufficient for some, no autobracketing and no autofocus with non-AFS lenses

...quality is largely determined by the lens, not the body. A Nikon D40 can easily triumph D90 given a much better lens. In fact, lens investment is going to cost you many times the cost of the camera. Therefore it is advisable to purchase a cheap body but good lenses, instead of a good body with cheap lenses. Camera body goes obsolete relatively quickly, while lenses can last for decades if being kept properly. The last thing you need to know is that a camera is only a tool. The beauty and aesthetics of your photos depend very much on your own ability as a photographer. Even a $3,000 camera will not miraculously capture beautiful photos when used by an amateur, but hey, we gotta start somewhere, right?...
