Pokémon Puzzle League (Nintendo 64)

Although the Pokémon aspect of Pokémon Puzzle League is purely thematic--which might disappoint lovers of Pikachu, while still warding off non-fans--the fun and challenging gameplay here makes this title one of the best in the puzzle genre. Gameplay in Pokémon Puzzle League is a variation on the puzzle classic Tetris: players must clear blocks off the screen by switching adjacent horizontal blocks to create horizontal and vertical lines of three or more identically coloured blocks. Blocks rise in rows from the bottom of the screen, and once they reach the top the game is over. While it's deceptively easy at first, the steadily increasing speed of the rising blocks requires players to make combos (more than three blocks in a line) and chains (creating multiple lines simultaneously), both of which pause the rise of the blocks temporarily. Featuring six gaming modes and puzzles in both 2-D and 3-D, Pokémon Puzzle League is best played by one player versus the computer (in the Stadium) or in two-player "versus" mode. In these modes, creating combos and chains causes "rubbish" blocks to fall from the top of your opponent's screen, which results in some villainously vindictive gameplay. --Joe Hon, Amazon.comPros:Fun and challenging Tetris-like game for all ages Outstanding two-player "versus" gameplay 2-D and 3-D puzzles, six gaming modes, and very thorough tutorials "Puzzle University" mode lets players create their own puzzles Cons: Pokémon aspect of the game is purely thematic ... less

Pokémon Snap (N64) - Nintendo 64

Although it's geared more for younger players, Pokémon Snap is good clean fun for Pokémon fans of any age. In this Pokémon battle-free adventure, players assist Professor Oak in completing his Pokémon Report by photographing the cute little monsters in the wild on Pokémon Island. Players take a trolley-like ride through the island's 3-D environments, filled with Pokémon that not only look just like they do in the cartoons, but also have "cries" to match. While there's a limited amount of film for each trip and no zoom lens, players enjoy great freedom of directional movement from within the vehicle, thanks to solid controls. Pokémon Snap isn't as easy as it looks, as not just any old picture will satisfy Professor Oak; submissions for his Pokémon Report are judged on size, pose, technique and whether or not there's more than one of the same Pokémon in the picture. As progress is made, new areas open up, and players are given items to aid them in their quest. Although there are only seven areas, they need to be revisited often, as hidden and otherwise uncooperative Pokémon must be "coaxed" by using items that you previously didn't have before. Also, Pokémon will do some of the craziest things--which make for great photographs--but only under certain conditions that require much experimentation (or a strategy guide) to unearth. --Joe Hon ... less

Pokémon Stadium 2 (Nintendo 64)

If you're a true Pokémon fan there's not a chance in Johto of you wanting to miss out on Pokémon Stadium 2. As with the original this isn't really a game as such, more a utility for the Game Boy games. Indeed, if you don't own Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver or Crystal then there's not much point owning Pokémon Stadium 2. However, if you do own any of these games, particularly the three new ones, then Pokémon Stadium 2 could well be manna from gaming heaven. Especially as this sequel now includes all 251 PokémonPokémon Stadium 2 has two main functions. The first is to allow you to upload your Pokémon from the Game Boy games (you'll need a Transfer Pak to do this, which is sold separately or comes with the first Pokémon Stadium game) and let them battle it out in stunning 3-D. The second function is to act as a sort of Pokémon encyclopaedia, and to this end there are mountains of tutorials, references and maps telling you everything you could ever possibly want to know about the world of Pokémon. Apart from a dozen Mario Party-esque mini-games the real gameplay comes from the 3-D battles. These come in a number of different forms, from basic friendly matches against up to three opponents (human or computer) to huge four-part tournaments against the toughest computer opponents around. This is the essential purchase for any Poké-fan. -- David Jenkins ... less

Pokémon Stadium - with Game Boy Transfer Pack (N64) - Nintendo 64

As with just about anything brandishing the Pokémon name, Pokémon Stadium is a must-have for any Pokémaniac. But this title is especially geared towards owners of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, or Pokémon Yellow, for the Game Boy. Using the same battle system as the Game Boy games--think highly advanced paper-scissors-stone- Pokémon Stadium allows players to enter their Pokémon in a variety of tournaments and other battle modes, all featuring vibrant 3-D graphics and animation, as well as enhanced sounds and announcer commentary. Using the included Transfer Pak, players can use their own Pokémon from Game Boy Game Paks, or they can choose from a pool of rental Pokémon. Pokémon Stadium isn't all battles, though. The Kids Club mode features nine cutesy mini-games that make for great multiplayer fun for all ages. Gallery mode lets players take snapshots of Pokémon (similar to Pokémon Snap), which can then be printed out as stickers at your local Pokémon Snap station. While Pokémon Stadium doesn't require that you already have any Game Boy version of Pokémon, players won't be able to access two of the best features of the game without one. Pokémon Lab allows players to view, store, and better organise the data on their Game Paks, as well as trade Pokémon with another player (which requires an additional Transfer Pak, sold separately). GB Tower allows gamers to play their Game Boy Pokémon cartridge on the Nintendo 64. --Joe Hon ... less

Pokemon as good as ever!
Advantages: Entertaining, addictive and hours of fun
Disadvantages: Price - too expensive
...I was a bit concerned before this game came out, that as it was a re-make of the classic Pokemon Gold, it would be exactly the same, they wouldn't of changed anything, but as usual, the developers do a fantastic job in making the next Pokemon game even better.
The storyline is the same, the journey from the Johto and Kanto regions, but new Pokemon from different generations are added...

Nintendo64
Advantages: Excellent games, fairly powerful, now quite cheap.
Disadvantages: Lack of games, a dying console.
...On first glance, the Nintendo64 appears to resemble a toy more than a cutting edge piece of video-gaming equipment. The reason behind this thinking are the curves that make up the macjine itself, and the multi-colour pads available for it. Switching the machine on, however, reveals that this machine is much more than a fisher-price toy.
The Nintendo64 is a 64bit console (hence the name...

Pokemon Black: A Great Addition to the Series
Advantages: Story a little more complex than normal, gameplay improved, graphics and music are great
Disadvantages: The new pokemon are...meh.
...for your amusement is good, honest. It?s understandable, since every Pokemon game is essentially aimed at a new generation of youngsters who Nintendo don?t want to put off with complex moral ambiguity, but sometimes I wish they?d make a game that rewards older fans for their loyalty to the series. This could have been it, but it missed the mark.
The Gameplay
